Chapter 621: Chu Zhimiao’s Unexpected Side
Early the next morning, in the Lin’an City base, Xie Zhou and his team were getting ready to leave the base with Chu Zhimiao. Since they needed to reach Jiangning City today, they opted to use the military chopper.
After they boarded the military chopper, Xie Zhou gestured to the pilot, and soon after, they took off and left the base. For this trip, Xie Zhou’s team was tasked to escort the space-type ability-users hired by the base.
At the same time, he also had to carry out his hidden mission, investigating the deal between Pei Yijun and the Wa country’s delegation. Although the chance for him to complete his mission was low, he didn’t plan to give up.
It took one and a half hours to reach the Jiangning City base. Unlike Xun Che, Pei Xun was very suspicious and never allowed outsiders to enter his base without inspection. So, they had to land outside the base.
Before the engine was turned off, a group of guards was already waiting for them outside.
When Xie Zhou and his team came out of the military chopper, a middle-aged man greeted him with a smile. “Captain Xie Zhou, I have heard a lot about you. Today, I am finally able to meet you in person.”
Although he was a soldier, this was not the first time Xie Zhou had met a hypocritical politician like this man. He kept his polite smile and shook hands with him while saying, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Comrade Huang.”
Hearing this, Huang Weiguo smiled and gestured for them to follow him. “Captain Xie, you and your team have to undergo some inspections before we can allow you to enter the base. I hope you can understand and won’t take offense.”
“It’s a normal procedure. We will cooperate,” Xie Zhou nodded in understanding.
The group went to a tent where they underwent several inspections before they took a car and went to the warehouse area.
Unlike the Lin’an City base, where they had several warehouse areas, the Jiangning City base centralized its warehouse area. Located at the center of the base, it was under heavy guard and surveillance.
Along the way, Xie Zhou observed the situation of the base and the residents. While most of the residents were living normally, their gazes were cold and their expressions were gloomy.
From this point alone, he could conclude that while the residents were able to fulfil their primary needs like food, water, and a place to stay, they didn’t have the same level of happiness and satisfaction as the Lin’an City base’s residents.
Sitting in the same car as him, Chu Zhimiao noticed his gaze and said in a low voice, “Captain Xie, if you want to know more about the real situation in this place, you should visit the slum area.”
When he heard this, Xie Zhou was taken aback. Chu Zhimiao was Pei Yijun’s trusted aide. Logically speaking, she shouldn’t tell him about this. After all, if he had bad intentions, he might use this matter to cause unrest in this base.
Meeting his questioning gaze, Chu Zhimiao added, “Don’t overthink. I’m not on the same side as Pei Xun. I only want these people to be able to survive and have hope for the future. If your base can do that, I won’t mind lending you a helping hand.”
This time, Xie Zhou finally paid more attention to her. From the information he gathered about her, he only knew that she was a spoiled, rich second-generation lady before the apocalypse. Even after the apocalypse, she was under Pei Yijun and Li Yang’s protection.
While she often went out on a mission, she was immature and lacked the qualities to lead a team. This was the reason why she suffered a lot of setbacks when facing other mercenary teams.
He never took her seriously because of this. Unexpectedly, behind those things, she was actually someone with a warm heart. Reaching this conclusion, Xie Zhou felt that he shouldn’t judge others without knowing them personally.
For the rest of the journey, it was enveloped in silence. An hour later, they arrived at the warehouse area. Coming out of the car, Xie Zhou looked at the neat buildings in the distance.
Compared to their warehouses, the Jiangning City base’s warehouses were larger and higher in number. But without farmland, they could only depend on the supplies collected from outside. So, despite the number of warehouses, most of them were empty.
Huang Weiguo led them to the nearby warehouses and said, “Captain Xie, you can take out the supplies, and my people will check the amount before we move them to the warehouse.”
Hearing this, Xie Zhou nodded and signaled the space-type ability-users to take out the supplies from their Space.
This was not the first time they were hired by the base, so the space-type ability-users worked with efficiency. Due to the high payment they received, they didn’t have any intention of embezzling the supplies.
After they took out the supplies, a group of guards would weigh them and record the data before another group of guards moved the supplies to the warehouse.
Chu Zhimiao, Xie Zhou, and his team only stood to the side to supervise them.
While they were busy counting the supplies, Mo Junjie was having a good meal in the Phantom team’s store. It was nine o’clock in the morning, and the number of customers eating in the store was still a lot.
At this moment, Mo Junjie was enjoying his meal when he heard the chairs beside him being pulled away. Raising his gaze, he saw Cheng Rui and Cheng Yue sit down with their food. Since there were no more empty seats in the store, he only glanced at them and continued eating.
The three of them ate in silence until Shen Jinyue placed a glass of warm milk on the table. “Brother Mo, you haven’t had a good meal for several days. My mother said you should drink some milk to nourish your body.”
