Chapter 718: They Aren’t His Business Rivals
“So… What should we do?” Ries asked as we floated out towards the edge of the training field.

I raised an eyebrow at the screen that showed the call with my catgirl lover, “Well… I thought we already mentioned this earlier? We’re here to bait those supposed ‘pirates’ out.”

“Umm… I know that, Boss… What I meant was what are we supposed to do to act like we’re students? I think if we just float around and not do anything, that also looks quite suspicious…”

Oh yeah, that’s true…

“I guess we can just shoot at the asteroids or something? Make it look like we’re doing target practice. Oh! And we should act like we suck as well! Just like… Miss our targets and fumble with the gun or something?”

Amber giggled, “Ehehe~ How devious, Tera~ I like it~”

That’s counted as devious in your books? Alright then…

“Hmm… I’m pretty surprised that his business rivals would resort to something like this though…” Ries commented.

“He’s lying,” Mara answered without a second’s hesitation.

I raised an eyebrow at her, “Did you read his mind just now when we met him?”

Mara shrugged, “I did, but I didn’t need to do that to know that he was lying to begin with.”

“Wait… Then why didn’t you stop us from accepting this job?”

“Because the thing he was lying about is the identity of the people who were after him and that wouldn’t have mattered either way.”

I raised an eyebrow, “What do you mean?”

“I already told you that he came from the Inner Colonies because he was basically running away from some people that he had offended within the Inner Colonies, right? Those people are most definitely not his ‘business rivals’.”

I frowned, “So basically… You’re saying that the people who would be attacking us are the ones who are after him within the Inner Colonies? And they chased him all the way out here just to get him?”

She nodded, “That does appear to be the case, yes.”

“You’re not going to tell me that they are from some Noble family or something, are you?”

“No. He is not entirely lying that they are his business rivals, but he is definitely lying about them already trying to sabotage him and failing before they resorted to what they are trying now. The only reason why this is happening is because they finally tracked him down and they are trying to finish the job. This would be their very first attempt at trying to ‘sabotage’ him as his ‘business rival’.”

“I’m guessing the guy we captured is also part of this ‘business rival’?” I guessed.

She nodded again, “That’s right. It is from that guy that our Instructor realised that his hideout has been found and he would have to face them. From what I can gleam from him, he’s lucky because this group was intending to claim the glory of hunting him down themselves instead of first reporting their findings back to their bosses. If we manage to beat them, this incident would be blown over as some pirates meeting their match and the truth would be hidden from their bosses as well.”

“Won’t they send people here to investigate anyway which would also lead to him being discovered again?”

Mara shrugged, “Perhaps. But he does have plans to prevent them from finding him out again even if they came to investigate. And even if he doesn’t, it doesn’t concern us either, Captain.”

That is true… We’re basically just playing the part of students that just so happen to be here when this happened and somehow managed to beat back what should have been experienced Exo-Knight pilots after only being his student for just a few days.

At most, the people will figure out that we were also experienced Mercs but even so, they would also know that we were indeed newbie pilots in the area of piloting Exo-Knights.

So in the worst case scenario, they would probably just believe that we had natural talent as pilots and not because we were specifically hired to deal with this guy’s business rival.

That would also give a boost to our own Mercenary reputation as our future clients would see that even as student pilots, we were able to fight off experienced pirate Exo-Knight pilots, so what would we be capable of achieving after we have formally graduated from this academy?

And you know what that means?

It means we’d be able to leverage this and charge a premium for our services in the future, heh heh heh~

Hey, why shouldn’t we be able to use this for our own benefit, right?! He’s already using us to help him with this problem of his to begin with so we might as well–

“Daddy~ Picking up some energy signatures at the edge of the training area~ Looks like we’re going to have company~” Renata reported cheerily, interrupting my thoughts.

The others would have also heard what Renata said and all of them also took a look at their maps at the same time.

Sure enough, there were several red dots that appeared at the edge of our scanners, indicating that our targets had taken the bait.

They must have already spotted us ‘struggling’ to pilot our Exo-Knights earlier and have chosen to engage us as their first targets before heading towards the station.

Doing a quick count, there seems to be twenty of them, which vastly outnumbered the six of us.

I wonder if they also sent out twenty Exo-Knights because they were expecting twenty students here as well?

Playing the part of being new students, we acted like we didn’t know what was happening and panicked at the sight of supposed enemies appearing on our scanners.

“Oh no! What’s going on?! Is this another test from the Instructor? Ahhhh! I don’t know what to do!” Amber cried out theatrically.

“Amber… They can’t hear us… Our comms have been encrypted by Renata to make sure that no one else can listen in or record them…” Lea reminded her.

“Oh right. Meh… Err… Flail my arms around a little bit and look around in a panic… Yeah, that should do it~” Amber chuckled, using her controls to make her Exo-Knight do what she just said.

I kept my eye on the screen showing the map of the area, watching as the red dots spread themselves out to surround us, most likely to ensure that none of us would be able to escape while using the asteroid around us to remain hidden from view.

“Ries? Do you know what model they are using?” I asked.

She paused for a moment before nodding, “Seems like they are using modified Lancer models so they will be melee focused Exo-Knights. I’m guessing they want to get close to the Instructor and subdue him, possibly even to capture him instead of killing him. They are faster than our models but we would be able to take more punishments than they can.”

I turned to the former Pirate Lord, “Yumiko, got any plans to deal with this?”

“They would most likely try to rush us with their energy lances to disable us. It would just be a simple matter to bait them out and defend against their attack with our shields and counter with our energy halberd, Mistress. As long as they believe they have the upper hand, they will not think that we would be capable of doing something like that. I assume that they will send one person for each of us while the others stay behind to keep watch. Once we deal with our attackers, we can then go after the others from behind.”

Perfect then~ Let’s start this little operation of ours~

We spread ourselves out, still acting the part of students that were panicking and being unsure of what to do.

At this distance, we would not be able to support each other and that would make us prime targets to be ambushed.

Sure enough, those guys took the bait and accelerated out from within the asteroid field to charge towards us.

Like Yumiko had predicted, they only sent six Exo-Knights out to try and incapacitate us, thinking that sending all of them would most likely be too big of an overkill.

The one coming after me flew from behind me, his energy lance poised to skewer me in the middle of my back.

I watched the rear view camera and timed it until he was right within range before I spun around and used my shield to knock the lance aside, though that did not stop the momentum he had as he continued to fly towards me.

The only thing he could see then, was the fact that I had my halberd out and had moved the tip directly in his flight path where the Exo-Knight’s chest would be.

In other words… Where the cockpit of the Exo-Knight would be.

Surprise motherfucker~ You messed with the wrong people~
