702: Now Fight Each Other For Privileges 702: Now Fight Each Other For Privileges “Today, you will be testing your designs to see how it holds up in a simulated scenario.

So I will have all of you engage in a one on one fight with each other.” That was the announcement we got when we showed up to class the next day.

Well… I can’t say I didn’t expect that… I just thought that perhaps we would first be told to fight against computer controlled opponents first or something but I guess he really wants us to get good fast.

“Is there even a point in this?” One of the Mercs asked aloud when we were making our way back to the room with the VR Capsules.

“Yes.

The people in the bottom five of the results will only be qualified for the normal Exo-Knight license,” The instructor answered.

Eh?

I turned to my girls, “Right, I forgot about this… What’s this about different levels of the Exo-Knight license?” Ries was the one who answered me, “Oh, me, me!

I know, Boss!

It’s the classification of the type of Exo-Knight you can pilot!

As the instructor said, the Exo-Knight uses Prisma as a power source so their power output is dependent on it but the power source itself is also very dangerous!

So the level of your license would determine the maximum power output your Exo-Knight can have that you are piloting!

A normal license would basically limit you to the mass produced ones!” “So there’s two types of licenses?” “Well… There’s three actually, if you don’t count the sub categories… First, there’s sub categories to the normal license like a sort of tier system… So you can get to a very high powered one if your license is of a specific tier.

Most people are holders of normal licenses and they would then try and apply for higher tiers which may be granted depending on their needs.” Hmm… I believe it’s like getting a normal driver’s license and then getting a heavy vehicle license on top of it or something?

She continued, “Then there’s the high grade license which opens you to custom made models up to a much higher limit of energy output as compared to the normal license.

And lastly, there’s the unrestricted license!” “And the unrestricted ones just… Don’t have any restrictions at all?” She nodded enthusiastically, “That’s right, that’s right!

And it’s really heavily regulated so only very few schools would grant that!” Mara spoke up, “The only schools that offer it are all located in the Inner Colonies and they mostly cater to nobles.

Even then, only very few are granted that license since it basically gives the wielder a really powerful weapon.” I tapped the side of my cheek, “So I’m guessing this school offers the high grade license?” Mara nodded, “It’s one of the few that are authorised to do so, yes.

Most of the pilots out in the Outer Colonies are only using the normal licenses so the Exo-Knights you would usually see are the mass produced variants.” That’s interesting to know.

“In that case, we can’t be placed at the bottom five then… Otherwise it’ll be a waste, right?” Mara shrugged, “I don’t really care either way.

I’m not planning on being an Exo-Knight pilot.” Right, she’s basically only here just to get the license in case she needs it in the future, not because she’s going to pilot one.

Well, I guess I should make sure I’m not in the bottom five then.

Looking at the other Mercs, it seems like they were also quite fired up by this as well.

I split up with my girls as we headed to our own VR Capsule to climb into them.

I was worried that I might need to set up the entire thing again but it seems to have saved my last settings because it automatically recreated my setup as I sat down to activate it.

I’m going to have to remember to change all of these to a manual control instead after the lesson is over… Otherwise they might figure out that someone on their roster was a Psionic if they boot up this capsule and realise whoever was using it was using the brainwaves type of control.

As though reading my mind, Renata giggled, “Ehehehe~ Don’t worry, Daddy!

I wiped all the records clean before you left yesterday!

I simply saved it and uploaded it as you entered the machine to restore your settings~ They won’t get anything from us!” I don’t think I say this enough, but I love you, Renata~ I settled down into my seat and started up the machine, the electronics humming to life.

The screen booted up to show an empty space with a dull grey floor that had black lines separating them into cubes, reminding me of the testing chamber back on that Zwerger forge station.

Opposite me was another Exo-Knight which I assume was supposed to be my opponent.

Static came from the machine’s speakers and the instructor’s voice came through, “Alright.

All of you should be paired up with someone right now who would be your opponent.

This entire day is just going to be duels after duels.

You get a point for winning and none for losing.

We’ll tally up the score at the end and the people on the bottom five of the board will only be able to graduate with a normal license.” Geez… So we’re just going to fight and fight and fight today I see… Well, I guess we got to do what we’ve got to do.

I was expecting us to just fight this out on an open ground when the floor started popping out of the ground, filling the flat arena with various obstacles that hid my opponent from view.

The word ‘Begin’ appeared in front of me and I guess the duel has officially started.

I checked my armaments and it looks like it was the standard loadout of the autocannon and the energy blade.

Either he expects us to fight using these weapons to ensure a fair duel or there might be boxes also scattered around the arena for us to use.

I decided that it would not be a good idea for me to try and find weapons since I’m already comfortable with my current loadout anyway and proceeded to start my hunt for my opponent.

Sucking in a deep breath, I settled into my pilot mode as I cleared my mind of all distractions and focused on nothing but controlling the Exo-Knight.

Taking a moment to test it out, I raised my hands and clenched and unclenched them, finding the Exo-Knight mimicking my movements as well.

Satisfied, I equipped myself with the autocannon and tried to flank to the right, thinking my opponent might try to make a dash straight for me.

Seems like whoever I was fighting also had the same idea of trying to flank as I heard their footsteps thumping towards me and I skidded to a stop, crouching behind one of the obstacles and switching to my energy blade.

The thumping got louder and louder until it was right beside me, prompting me to jump out and stab my energy blade at where I believed my target was.

I was fully expecting them to either dodge or block my blow in which case I already thought of alternate plans to counter them but… My energy blade sank straight into their chest and bypassed their shields, a blow that was considered fatal under normal circumstances.

The simulation registered the blow and my opponent disappeared into light particles and a number at the top right of my screen appeared showing the number one.

Err… That was easy?

I guess that guy was not prepared for a surprise attack at all… A new screen popped up in front of me ‘All opponents are still occupied, please wait for a new opponent’.

Ah… I guess I killed my guy too fast and no one else has won yet… And they weren’t going to let me just fight the same guy to farm him either so I have to wait for someone else to win before I can get another guy to fight.

Hmm… I guess I’ll take this chance to test out the Exo-Knight’s manoeuvrability then… I started climbing and jumping around the obstacles, testing the limits of the Exo-Knight I was piloting.

Seems like it was strong enough for it to pull itself up if it had to, so that’s one avenue of attack that I can take advantage of for my next opponent.

Just as I thought of that, the screen changed and the word ‘Begin’ was displayed.

Eh?

They didn’t even send me back to the starting point… I’m still standing on top of the obstacle and I can even see my new opponent teleport in at the same spot as before.

Really?

Isn’t this a little cheaty?

Well, I guess I won’t complain since this is beneficial for me.

Sorry whoever you are, but I’m going to start shooting you from up here now~ CREATORS’ THOUGHTS Draekai Captain’s Log: Geez, we’re only on our third day and the instructor has us bullying each other already…
