Chapter 421: Uncomfortable Encounter
Despite Neraxis not exactly getting what he wanted, he continued pacing around the giant mansion, analyzing pretty much every nook and cranny imaginable. If he was going to fight here, then he had to be aware of every entry and exit point, after all.
But he very quickly realized that despite the size, the mansion only had two exits: the front where he had entered, and a secret tunnel in the basement. The way he found it was simple. All he needed to do was go down to the cellar, knock out a guard, and then carefully inspect everything.
Nonetheless, after he was done with the surveillance, he sneaked back amongst the crowd and began drinking and eating whatever he saw.
Still, he was a little puzzled by the lack of communication from Delta’s end. After all, wasn’t he supposed to be protecting someone here? If he didn’t know who they were, then—
<Simon Cornwell.> Delta spoke. <He’s currently on the second floor, lounge area. He has black hair and a barely noticeable bald spot at the very top of his head. Despite his appearance, he’s not a scumbag. He’s a very big investor for a company I’ve been running on the side.>
After a pause, she added:
<So, what I’m trying to say is, just make sure he doesn’t get killed. Oh, and he’s old-fashioned. Don’t take anything he says too seriously.>
Neraxis nodded.
“Got it. What about this man’s sister? You mentioned she won’t be here, but I’m getting a bad feeling about this.”
A moment of silence followed.
<…You will likely see her as well. Don’t panic. Although she has been killed, she has been resurrected with a certain type of magic. She is a little different than before, but so long as you maintain the personality I told you about, you will be fine.>
“…”
She really just dumped me into a shark tank, didn’t she? Neraxis thought, angry, but before he could begin to complain, her voice faded from his comms.
It seemed like she had said what she wanted to say, and with his mission now in full swing, Neraxis made his way over to the second floor, biting down the unease from the earlier news.
When he arrived, he saw that it had many more people than on the first floor. Furthermore, most of them seemed very rich.
Designer clothes, watches that probably cost a fraction of this mansion, and even glasses with diamonds. These people showed off that they were rich, but if Neraxis were to meet one of them on the street, you best believe he would generously borrow everything they had.
Right as he was about to turn the corner and begin looking for Simon, Neraxis spotted a figure coming out of the lavatory. It was a woman with black hair and purple eyes. The pressure she exuded just from her slow steps alone was enough for him to go on guard.
But before he could begin to assess her, he realized the direction she had begun walking in was the same direction where he stood.
That realization came one second too late, however. He wasn’t even able to make it five steps before someone tapped him on the shoulder, forcing him to turn back around.
The black-haired woman, from what Neraxis could gather, was this Moriarty Stewart’s sister, Sarah.
She puffed out her cheeks, an annoyed expression spreading across her face.
“Just where do you get off avoiding me? I thought you said we’d be eating some good food here, and yet you told me to come here ahead of time. You even stopped answering my calls.”
Neraxis rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
“My bad. I thought I could take a shit before I went out. Turns out I ate something spoiled, so—”
“Eww… Stop.” She interrupted. “I don’t care anymore. Just remember what you promised me the other day.”
Right… Neraxis sighed inwardly.
Even though she didn’t hear his sigh, she picked up on his confusion.
“Don’t you remember?” she asked, her voice cold.
Is this what everyone calls the womanly instinct? Neraxis thought, deciding to somehow weasel his way out of this.
And what better way to do that than by being oblivious?
“Sorry… I don’t remember.”
She just stared at him. He half expected her to reply, but instead, she grabbed him by his tie and suddenly dragged him into the lavatory. It was the women’s lavatory, but even then, none of the women objected to the eye candy in the form of Neraxis being there.
And soon enough, Sarah tossed him into one of the stalls, locking the door behind her. Clearly, the other women outside thought some kind of scandal was about to go down—but not Neraxis.
Her gaze didn’t portray any bit of obsession or affection. Instead, it was raw hate, directed straight at him.
“You’re not really my brother, are you?”
Neraxis tilted his head.
“What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean,” she shot back, pushing him against the wall. Then, out of her sleeve, a thin knife slid down.
Without wasting a beat, she placed that knife against his throat, drawing blood.
“I know you’re not my brother, because my brother is dead. The deal I made with the person who was occupying my brother’s body was that he wouldn’t show himself in my sight, and after this gala was over, he would leave.”
She edged the blade closer, stabbing a small portion of it into his throat. He didn’t move, not really feeling the need to. If she were to actually try to kill him, he would cut her head off in an instant.
As much as he would hate himself for it, he cared about his family more than the family of some complete stranger.
And so, when the silence extended past the one-minute mark, Sarah finally removed her knife from his throat, making him let out a relieved breath.
“Thanks for that.”
“You’re not denying it?” she asked, narrowing her eyes. “That you killed my brother, I mean.”
“I didn’t kill anyone,” Neraxis replied. “And please, for both our sakes… let’s have this conversation later.”
She scoffed.
“You’re on a mission? You’re not even the same guy I talked to yesterday? Just how disrespectful can you get?”
He knew she wanted to vent all her frustrations on him. After all, it wasn’t easy staring at the person who was cosplaying as her dead brother.
But even so, at the moment, the mission came first.
