Chapter 419: Before the Mission
There were probably many more kisses than there were hits, but Neraxis didn’t sulk about it. If anything, Evangeline’s support was what got him through the annoying training.
In fact, the training lasted exactly one month. That was when Delta finally realized that he might actually be compatible enough to go out for combat, and that was the point they were at right now.
“Take this,” Delta said, tossing over a thin rapier. “Use it carefully. Don’t use Evangeline. Whenever you’re on missions, leave her here. I will take good care of her.”
“Good care?” Neraxis raised a brow. “Is that before or after you snuck into our room while we were going at it?”
“The doors have locks for a reason, Neraxis,” Delta replied without going into too many details. “Now keep your head on straight, and Evangeline, you can come out now.”
Neraxis heard Evangeline click her tongue inside his mind, and then she manifested herself once again, a slight smile on her face as she turned on her heel, giving him a small nod.
“You practiced enough, so make sure this mission goes okay. I want to see you happy, after all,” Evangeline said with a chuckle. “Oh, and don’t forget to get me something nice. I was thinking maybe a bouquet of flowers? No… Perhaps a flower pot?”
“He won’t have any money,” Delta interjected. “He’s going into this mission with just his Obscura mask, his gear, and the rapier I just gave him. Money can be traced by those who have skills. If people are looking for us, which they definitely are, then they will certainly scan every suspicious individual’s bills.”
Of course, she knew that besides that, there was the problem of him still appearing on the Dreamspire rankings. It was not an oversight, but more of a technicality that Delta decided not to use a countermeasure against.
After all, if her enemies knew that Neraxis was still alive, then she could do a lot more damage when she finally revealed him. He was powerful for his age, and with every passing moment, he grew even stronger.
But alas, this praise would never reach Neraxis’s ears, who, before departing, gave Evangeline a kiss on the lips. As they were about to get slightly into it, Delta coughed, getting their attention, especially Neraxis’s.
“You remember the mission?” Delta asked.
“How could I not.” Neraxis sighed. “You want me to infiltrate the Anniversary Gala.”
Delta nodded in affirmation. “And what do I want you to do inside of it?”
Hearing her quizzing tone, Neraxis couldn’t help but groan and recall the full details of the mission.
“You want me to protect a client who’s going to have pursuers coming after them. The duration is eight hours, and I can only finish the job if I successfully escort the client to their home after the Gala is over.”
Narrowing his eyes, he made a complaint. “But why exactly don’t I know the client’s name? Isn’t that a little counterproductive? What if they die before I can reach them?”
“You will get that information the moment you enter the building,” Delta said flatly. “There is a certain algorithm that scans your memories for your intent. It’s used in every single venue that houses important people.”
Stepping closer and adjusting his gear, she continued.
“As it stands now, you have an invite to the Gala, and you go by Moriarty Stewart. He’s a noble and rich man, but no one knows what he looks like, except that he’s young and has black hair and purple eyes.”
She waved her hand over his hair, and in the next instant, his hair turned black.
“You’re now Moriarty Stewart. A nobleman who has arrived with the intention to protect Sarah Stewart, your sister,” Delta added. “That’s what will show on the algorithm because you’re very protective of your sister. Both of you are, actually, that’s why you fit this role so well.”
Neraxis’s head spun. “So doesn’t you telling me everything ruin it?”
“Not at all,” Delta replied with a giggle. “This only gives you insight. The algorithm will scan something else. Just don’t worry about it. I will give you the name of the person you’ll be protecting when you successfully pass all the tests.”
With those words, she turned around, and as she was about to send him away, Neraxis raised a few questions.
“This… Sarah Stewart… Will she be there?”
“She won’t. It’s a guise,” Delta replied, not meeting his gaze.
A moment of silence ensued, but she soon broke it with some tragic news.
“Truth is, Sarah and Moriarty were both killed a little over a month ago. Before you say anything, no, it wasn’t our doing. You don’t need to know more than that. Just remember your mission, and don’t ask me too many questions.”
His other question would’ve been about Moriarty himself, but it seemed that if the two were dead, then he could rest easy. Even if he didn’t know the people, a brother-and-sister duo dying was always a shitty situation to think about, no matter how he looked at it.
Nevertheless, after giving Evangeline one more kiss, Neraxis stood away from the two of them. Soon enough, he felt mana envelop his entire body, slightly propelling it in all directions.
It wasn’t the usual teleportation they used. In fact, this type of teleportation was something that he had come up with.
He was sure that the area was being monitored with top-notch security. However, teleportation spells, scrolls, or even wizardry weren’t that uncommon. Even William could do it.
And because of that, if Neraxis showed an imperfection right off the bat, he had a higher chance of getting away with whatever this mission was.
After all… Who would suspect someone who purposefully gives an opening?
Short answer, everyone.
However, Delta had thought about it and agreed, saying it wasn’t that bad of an idea.
So with that in mind, Neraxis steadied himself, and in the next instant, he vanished from sight.
