Chapter 221: Where Did He Get This One?
At first, Evelyn didn’t pay much attention as it was only background noise to her.
She thought it was just another celebrity scandal or business headline that didn’t concern her and was likely much exaggerated by the media.
But as soon as the reporter mentioned a familiar name, her gaze and mind shot toward the TV.
“Breaking news: Lana Scott attempts to kill herself…”
The words struck her like a slap behind the head. She froze. The iPad slipped slightly from her hands as her eyes focused on the TV screen in disbelief.
“No way! You’ve got to be kidding me…” she muttered.
For a moment, she just stared blankly at the flashing red “Breaking News” banner, unsure whether to laugh or be shocked.
She leaned forward and grabbed the iPad again, quickly searching the same article on her screen.
When she read it, she couldn’t help but let out a chuckle.
“Gosh, these journalists,” she muttered under her breath. “Why the heck do they use such narration?”
The article headline screamed ‘attempted suicide’, but the actual story told something very different. Lana hadn’t tried to kill herself. She had been in a severe car accident.
According to the report, her car skidded on the rain-slicked road, collided with the guardrail, and then flipped into a side road.
Lana suffered a critical life-threatening injury, but the paramedic managed to stabilize her enough to be safely transported to the nearest hospital, which happened to be Hope Medical Centre, for complete intensive care.
“Interesting…” Evelyn murmured, narrowing her eyes as she read the details.
The hospital name lingered in her mind. Hope Medical Centre, Axel’s hospital. It is also the same hospital where Axel sent her father.
“Why near that hospital, of all places?”
And then a thought came, uninvited but impossible to ignore.
‘Was the accident somehow related to Axel? I mean… did he deliberately punish her with this one?’
Her brows furrowed as she leaned back against the sofa.
“No, no, that’s crazy thinking,” she said to herself, shaking her head as if to shake away the suspicion.
Still, the thought lingered stubbornly.
‘If Axel really wanted to help her for revenge…’ she thought silently, ‘would he go this far?’
Her lips curled up slightly, and a nervous chuckle escaped.
‘Geez, Eve… If your handsome husband could read your thoughts right now, he might kiss you to tease you and softly scold you for even having that thought.’
Evelyn shook her head while smiling.
But, she can’t dismiss the thought because she knows what kind of man Axel is. He is ruthless in business, but when it comes to personal matters, he rarely acts on impulse. She didn’t believe he’d ever risk something so reckless.
Still, after everything her father had done, the possibility wasn’t completely unthinkable.
“My goodness, Eve… you shouldn’t feel bad about that family wrecker slut,” she murmured, closing the article.
The tension in her chest refused to fade, so she decided to distract herself. She picked up the iPad again and returned to the online shopping catalog Dylan had shown her earlier.
“Alright,” she said, exhaling, “let’s do something productive before I overthink again.”
Scrolling through the luxurious collection, Evelyn began browsing for a birthday gift for Axel.
The options were endless: watches, ties, designer pens, and limited-edition cufflinks.
But as she tapped through the items, she couldn’t help but mutter under her breath, “Why are men’s things so expensive? It’s like they charge you extra just because it’s shiny.”
After a few minutes of searching, she found a pair of elegant platinum cufflinks, engraved with subtle geometric patterns.
“Perfect,” she whispered with a smile. “He loves cufflinks. The simpler, the better.”
Still, she wasn’t done. She remembered that Oliver had also wanted to buy his father a gift.
“Hmm… what would a four-year-old choose?” she mumbled thoughtfully. “Something small but meaningful.”
Her eyes landed on a golden horse figurine… sleek, minimal, and bold. She tilted her head and chuckled.
“Oh, Oliver would love this. It looks like his drawing of Daddy’s horse.”
Evelyn added both to her cart and hit purchase, grinning at her small victory. “Done. Two gifts for Axel…”
Feeling satisfied, she set the iPad down on the coffee table.
But as silence crept back into the room, her curiosity began to stir again.
Her gaze drifted toward the half-open door in the corner, the one Axel said led to the bedroom.
She bit her lip, debating. “Just a peek,” she told herself, standing up. “He said I could rest there, right?”
Slowly, she walked toward the door and pushed it open.
The room inside was sophisticated yet minimalist and cozy, exactly what she expected from Axel Knight. The walls were a soft light gray, paired with dark wooden furniture. A queen-sized bed sat against the wall, ideally made with crisp white sheets.
A single leather armchair stood by the corner near a wide window that offered the same breathtaking city view as the office.
The scent of cedar and musk lingered faintly in the air, the kind that reminded her of Axel’s cologne. It felt like stepping into his private world.
She walked around quietly, her eyes wandering across the neat surfaces.
Everything was spotless, with no clutter or unnecessary decorations, just practicality and precision.
Until her gaze fell on the small desk beside the bed.
There, propped neatly against the lamp, were several framed photographs.
Evelyn’s steps slowed.
Her breath caught as she reached for one of them.
It was a picture of the three of them at Oliver’s birthday party, the same photo that Eleanor had insisted they take together. Axel’s arm was around her waist, his expression uncharacteristically soft. At the same time, Oliver stood in front of them, grinning widely with frosting on his cheek.
Evelyn’s heart swelled with pure joy. She picked up another frame, it was their wedding picture, the one where he kissed her.
This was the first time she had seen this picture since their wedding day on the rooftop.
She can’t help but smile widely as she thinks back to those days.
But when her eyes landed on the last picture, her heart felt like it was about to stop.
It was her, in the hospital, holding a tiny, swaddled Oliver in her arms. Her hair was messy, her eyes swollen from crying, but her smile was radiant.
Evelyn’s hand trembled slightly as she brushed her finger across the glass frame. “Where did Axel get this one?” she whispered.
