Chapter 162: Who Is Her Husband?
The luxury coupe glided smoothly along the quiet, tree-lined road.
Inside, Joseph Carter frowned at the glowing GPS on his dashboard.
“Evelyn lives here?” he muttered, squinting at the GPS screen on the dashboard before glancing out the window.
Everything around him looked like something out of a billionaire magazine spread: towering trees, private security cameras, and not a single ordinary house in sight.
“This can’t be right…” he murmured, zooming in on the GPS again. But the glowing blue dot confirmed it. The address Evelyn had given him matched perfectly.
“Did I enter the wrong address?” He double-checked, typing it in again. The result didn’t change.
Joseph exhaled deeply.
“Oh, great. Either she moved into a palace, or I’m about to get arrested for trespassing.”
The road stretched endlessly ahead, curving past a sparkling lake and another set of tall trees before finally revealing a massive black gate.
He slowed the car to a stop, feeling more like a delivery driver than a guest.
A sudden metallic ‘clank’ startled him. Then, a slim metal pole rose from the ground beside his car, with a tablet-sized screen blinking to life.
“Hello, good afternoon,” a smooth woman’s voice, with a bit of a robotic tone, greets him from the speaker. “Please roll down your window for face recognition and verification.”
Joseph blinked. “What the hell… huh, okay, let’s see.” He rolled down the window, his face showing apparent doubt.
The screen flashed, scanning his face in a bright blue light. After a moment, the robotic voice returned, polite as ever.
“Welcome, Mr. Joseph Carter.”
The pole lowered smoothly back into the ground as the gates creaked open before him.
Joseph gawked, jaw slightly hanging open in disbelief.
“Wow, their facial recognition can actually identify me! How are they able to recognize my face and identity? Is this some secret government facility?”
In disbelief, he rolls his car forward; well into five minutes of driving, he still hadn’t spotted a single building.
Only the winding road, a well-maintained one, and rows of tall, beautiful trees on either side.
“Evelyn lives here? Unbelievable,” he repeated, “Wow… no wonder she bought out the Walters’ shares like she buys candies.”
Joseph chuckled softly, shaking his head when he remembered that five years ago, Evelyn Walters had been kicked out of her powerful family with nothing.
And now, she lived in a place where even the air smelled expensive.
“Evelyn, you really never fail to shock me,” he said with a smile.
But then his smile faded. That one question—the same one that had nagged him for weeks—crept back into his thoughts.
‘Who is her husband?’ This question has been haunting him ever since Stella told him that Evelyn is already married.
He had tried to guess about her mysterious new partner.
Still, it was difficult for him to get a name because Evelyn was always discreet and private.
And in the past, he had rarely ever seen her with a man besides their business client.
When she called him two days ago to invite him to her son’s birthday party, he was too stunned to ask.
Finally,
After a few more turns, a sprawling modern mansion appeared in the distance.
Its sleek glass walls reflected the sunlight, framed by lush greenery and elegant stone paths.
A few uniformed staff members stood nearby, guiding his cars to park.
Joseph followed their directions, pulling into a spotless parking space.
He didn’t get out immediately. Instead, he grabbed his phone and typed a quick text.
“Hi Eve, I’ve arrived at your house.”
Just in case.
He still half-expected her to text back: “Oh no, Jo, wrong mansion.”
When no correction came, he sighed, grabbed the paper bag in the backseat, his gift for her son, and stepped out of the car.
The air carried a faint scent of pine and polished stone. Even the birds sounded polite here.
He walked up to the main entrance, admiring the intricate woodwork on the tall double doors. But before he could even lift a hand to ring the bell, the door opened.
And what he saw froze him on the spot.
Standing there, looking as effortlessly composed as ever, was Axel Knight.
For a second, Joseph thought he was hallucinating. His mind scrambled to catch up.
‘Why is Axel Knight here? Am I dreaming?’ He blinked hard.
Nope.
This is not a dream.
The most powerful man in the country was right in front of him, dressed casually in a crisp black shirt, sleeves rolled up, as if opening doors for guests was a regular part of his day.
Joseph’s mouth went dry.
“A-Axel K-Knight?” he stammered.
Axel’s lips curved slightly, more amused than annoyed. “Yes.”
Joseph immediately straightened, clearing his throat. “I’m sorry, sir. I think I came to the wrong house. I was supposed to—”
Axel’s voice interrupted him, calm and smooth. “No, you’re at the right address.”
Joseph was utterly shocked. “I am?”
Axel opened the door wider. “You came to my son’s birthday party. Come in. My wife’s been waiting for you.”
For a moment, Joseph couldn’t think clearly, as if a circuit in his brain had short-circuited.
‘Your son? Your wife?’
He stepped inside automatically, his brain spinning faster than his feet.
Every step echoed with disbelief. He followed Axel into the grand foyer, still gripping the paper bag like a lifeline.
The house was stunning, warm yet luxurious, filled with sunlight and laughter.
From somewhere deeper in the house, he could hear a child’s laughter.
‘Evelyn’s son!?’
The realization hit him like a freight train.
‘Wait. Axel Knight’s son?’
He stopped for a brief second, his pulse quickening.
From all the names he had ever imagined as Evelyn’s mysterious husband, Axel Knight had never been one of them. Evelyn was bold, yes, but this… this was a twist even he couldn’t have predicted.
He tried to compose himself, though his heart was thundering.
Then, Axel’s voice broke through his thoughts. “You can leave your gift on the table.”
“Ah, yes. T-thank you, Mr. Knight,” Joseph managed to force a polite smile; however stuttered. “It’s… an honor.”
Axel glanced at him, expression unreadable, then nodded once before walking toward the sound of voices in the next room.
Joseph exhaled shakily the moment Axel turned away.
‘What in the world did I just walk into?’ he whispered loudly to himself, still gripping the paper bag. Now tighten it before placing it on the table.
He looked around once more, his eyes settling on the framed photos on the walls. He could see Evelyn and Axel Knight in the wedding picture with a young boy.
‘So, Evelyn’s husband is really Axel Knight?’
