Chapter 151: Maxime Knight
The tension in the car finally began to fade. The laughter and warmth from dinner slowly returned.

They talk again about dinner, Eleanor’s unforgettable cooking, and how Andrew kept teasing Axel about his childhood frog experiments.

Axel tried to deny the story, but Evelyn refused to let him off easily.

“I still can’t believe you tortured frogs,” she teased.

“I was a six-year-old and remarkably inquisitive kid,” he protested.

“Still…” She laughs.

“Oh, wait until I meet your grandparents. I will ask them to expose you,” he playfully teased.

Instantly, Evelyn’s laugh faded.

“Alright, alright, I won’t mention the frog incident again.” She realizes it’s best not to bring up the topic in their conversation.

Not now. Not in the future. Or it might backfire on her.

Because she also has many shameless stories from her childhood.

…

By the time they reached their house, the mood had completely softened.

The lights inside glowed warmly through the windows, a welcome contrast to the cold outside.

Axel parked the car and stepped out first, circling around to open her door.

“Home, finally,” he murmured, his tone gentle again.

Evelyn smiled and took his hand as she got out. She glanced at her watch and was surprised that it was already ten.

“I need to check Oliver…”

Axel gave a slight nod before handing the car key to Jimmy.

They walked inside together, the quiet hum of the house wrapping around them.

Evelyn turned, expecting Axel to follow her to the bedroom, but instead, he paused. Hold her hand.

“I’ll go to my home office for a while,” he said softly. “There’s something I need to handle.”

Evelyn hesitated. “Work?”

“Something like that.”

She didn’t press. Instead, she smiled faintly. “Alright. Don’t stay up too late. Do you need coffee?”

“It’s fine. I didn’t plan to stay awake all night.” He smiles.

“Alright, I will check on Oliver upstairs. Call me when you’re finished; I will also stay in my office.”

“Hmm…” He leaned down and brushed his lips against hers, a brief but tender kiss that lingered longer than it should have.

Then he stepped back and made his way to his office at the end of the corridor.

Evelyn stood there for a moment, watching his back disappear behind the door.

She could still sense that faint tension clinging to him, something unresolved from his encounter with his cousin.

But she trusted him enough not to pry. Or is she?

She shook her head and set aside her worry about it. Then she continued to her bedroom.

After she finished washing up and put on her comfortable pajamas, she went upstairs to check on Oliver.

The sight of her little boy peacefully sleeping made her heart soften.

His tiny hand rested against his cheek, his chest rising and falling in gentle rhythm.

Evelyn leaned down, brushed a kiss on his forehead, and whispered, “Sweet dreams, baby.”

As she turned off the light, she found herself thinking of Axel again.

The way his expression had darkened the moment that car arrived, and how quickly he had hidden it afterward.

Something about that meeting with his cousin felt heavier than he wanted her to know.

She tried to put aside those thoughts, but a quiet unease lingered, whispering in the back of her mind.

‘Stop overthinking, Eve! Perhaps he’s simply in a bad mood; his cousin saw you…’

For Evelyn, it might not be a big deal if Axel’s family knows her. But not for him, right? Perhaps he isn’t close enough to his cousin? That’s why he worries?

She turned on her laptop and began her work.

…

While in Axel’s home office.

Axel stood in the center of his study, surrounded by silence and darkness.

The moonlight spilled through the tall French windows, painting silver streaks across the floor.

His expression was unreadable, his eyes fixed on the glowing crescent above the horizon. But his thoughts were nowhere near the sky.

They were back at his grandfather’s house, just an hour ago, when that familiar, irritating smirk appeared in his mind.

Maxime Knight!

Axel had almost forgotten how effortlessly his cousin could ruin his mood.

And just like that, their earlier conversation replayed in his mind like a video clip.

…

“Axel,” Max greeted as he stepped out of his car, his tone too casual for someone who hadn’t shown up in years. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”

Axel didn’t bother replying. He kept his hands in his pockets, watching his cousin’s every move.

Max was dressed in one of those perfectly pressed suits that screamed money but lacked soul, typical of him.

“I heard Grandpa’s been thrilled lately,” Max continued, walking closer. “He said you would bring someone special to dinner.” He paused, his eyes flickering with amusement. “So tell me, bro… is it true you told him you’re married? And the woman you marry is the woman in the car?”

Axel’s jaw tightened. “Yes.” His tone was calm.

Max laughed under his breath. “You? Married? The Axel Knight who once said marriage was for fools with no control over their emotions?”

“People change,” Axel replied evenly.

“Oh, I’m sure they do,” Max said, narrowing his eyes like a curious cat. “But now I’m dying to know… who’s the lucky woman?”

“You don’t need to know her name.” His expression remained calm, just like how he answered him.

Max raised an eyebrow, a smile curving his lips. “Come on, don’t be shy, bro. Is she from one of our business partners’ families? A model? Or maybe someone… forbidden? Can you allow me to greet her? My sister in-law?”

Axel took a step forward, closing the space between them. The temperature seemed to drop as his voice lowered.

“Listen carefully, Max. You will not look for her. You will not speak her name. You will not ask anyone about her. If I hear even a whisper that you tried—”

“—you’ll what?” Max cut in, his tone mocking but his smile slightly faltering.

Axel leaned in until their eyes met. “You’ll regret it.”

The words hung in the air, cold and certain.

Max didn’t laugh. His smirk wavered, though he quickly masked it. “Touchy topic, huh? Fine. I was just curious. Don’t take it so personally, brother.”

Axel didn’t answer. He simply patted Max’s shoulder, hard enough to make him take a half step back, and turned toward his car.

As he reached for the door, he glanced once more at Max, who stood in the glare of the headlights, smiling like a man who’d just found something far too interesting to ignore.
