Chapter 149: Meeting the Knight Family (4)
Eleanor gave him a long, pointed look, the kind only grandmothers have perfected after decades of use.
“That’s my job, dear. And for the record, you’re already spoiled enough to last three lifetimes.”
Andrew chuckled softly, shaking his head with amusement.
“Your grandma’s right, Axel. We’ve spoiled you more than enough. It’s time someone else gets the attention.”
Andrew smiled warmly at Evelyn before continuing, “Now it’s your turn to be showered with love, Eve.”
Evelyn laughed softly, glancing at Axel just in time to see him lift his hands in surrender, his grin stretching wide.
But behind his teasing charm, there was something gentler; a tenderness that caught her off guard.
She noticed it in the way he quietly served food for his grandparents first, making sure Eleanor got the softer part of the roast. At the same time, he reminded her to take her evening medicine without a hint of impatience.
Or in how he smiled every time his grandparents sided with her instead of him, pretending to sulk, but his eyes gleamed with quiet affection.
Seeing this side of Axel, calm, thoughtful, almost boyishly kind, made Evelyn’s heart flutter.
For all his sharp edges, there was warmth buried deep inside him, and tonight, it was shining through.
Dinner flowed with laughter and stories that bounced easily between them.
Eleanor and Andrew took turns exposing Axel’s mischievous youth; how he’d once climbed the barn roof to prove a point, how he’d accidentally set off fireworks indoors.
And of course, they talk again about the legendary “frog experiment.”
By dessert,
Evelyn’s cheeks hurt from laughing.
The tension she’d carried when they first arrived had melted away completely.
She’d been so nervous about meeting them, afraid of being judged or measured, but instead, they made her feel like family.
And then, just as she was starting to relax, Axel decided to drop a bomb.
He calmly looked at his grandparents and said, “There’s something else I want to tell you… something important.”
Eleanor and Andrew both looked up expectantly.
Axel smiled faintly. “Evelyn and I… we have a son.”
For a moment, silence blanketed the dining room.
Eleanor gasped before she managed to say, “Oh my goodness… You both already have a son?”
Her voice was full of disbelief, but her eyes softened almost immediately. She gently holds Evelyn’s hand, her smile growing wide and genuine.
However, Andrew looked as if he had just been told the stock market had crashed. And their company’s stock price had hit its lowest point since its initial listing. He was utterly shocked.
“Wait, wait. I’m still shocked to learn you married Evelyn, now you have a child, and somehow managed not to tell us?” Andrew said.
Axel smiles.
“That’s correct,” he said lightly, as if announcing the weather today is lovely. “His name is Oliver Taylor Knight.”
The grandparents exchanged stunned looks.
Eleanor’s mouth opened, closed, then opened again before she managed a strangled laugh. “Ha-ha-ha…. Oh heavens above,” she breathed. “A great-grandchild. Andrew, did you hear that? We’re great-grandparents!”
“I heard,” Andrew said dryly. “Just making sure I’m not hallucinating.” He laughed, then added, “How old did you say he was?”
“He’ll turn four in a few days,” Axel replied.
Eleanor gasped again.
“Four years old?!” Her hand flew to her chest. “You mean… your son with Evelyn, right?”
Axel’s lips twitched.
“Yes, Grandma. My biological son. With Evelyn. I know you wonder, and I promise I will tell you the whole story someday.”
Eleanor gave a loud, joyful laugh.
“Oh, dear heavens. First, you surprise us with a marriage, and now this? Axel Knight, you truly enjoy shocking your poor grandparents!” Her shock quickly melted into delight. “A great-grandchild! I can not believe I have a great-grandchild while I’m still alive. God bless you, Axel! Evelyn!”
“Thank you, Grandma. Grandpa,” Evelyn said softly, her cheeks flushed but her eyes shining.
Eleanor clasped her hands together like an excited child.
“Oliver Taylor Knight. What a strong name. Do you have his picture? Please tell me you do, and you bring one right now.”
Evelyn nodded, unlocking her phone and scrolling through her gallery until she found the one she loved most: Oliver on his pony, Browny, laughing freely under the sunlight.
She handed the phone to Eleanor.
“Oh, look at that smile!” Eleanor exclaimed, beaming. “He’s just like Axel at that age… same mischievous eyes, same charming smile, same stubborn hair.”
“Really? Let me see,” Andrew said impatiently, reaching for the phone. He squinted for a moment, then chuckled. “Oh, my God! You’re right. The resemblance is uncanny. But let’s hope he doesn’t inherit your curiosity for frogs.”
Once again, laughter filled the air, warm and genuine, and Evelyn felt something swell inside her chest… a mix of joy and relief.
These people didn’t just tolerate her; they embraced her.
She no longer felt nervous around Axel’s grandparents.
In fact, she felt as though she’d known them all her life.
By the time they said their goodnights, Eleanor and Andrew were glowing with happiness.
They hugged Evelyn tightly, their warmth genuine and unfiltered.
Eleanor even whispered, “We can’t wait to meet him, honey. We’ll definitely be coming to his birthday party,” before letting her go.
“Grandma, Grandpa,” Axel called, his tone turning serious. “Don’t share information about Oliver and Evelyn with anyone. I want it to remain a secret.”
Eleanor’s expression was slightly taken aback, but she eventually smiled.
Andrew frowned slightly before asking, “Not even your parents?”
“Yes!”
“We promise we won’t say anything,” Andrew assured him before letting them go.
…
The night air outside was crisp, carrying the faint scent of pine and cool earth.
Evelyn inhaled deeply, her smile soft and content.
“That went better than I expected,” she said, her voice still full of disbelief. “I really like them, Axel. They’re so kind.”
Axel nodded, his hand resting protectively on her lower back as they walked toward the car.
“They adore you already.”
She looked up at him, eyes sparkling. “Even after the frog story?”
He chuckled, his voice low.
“Especially after that. You laughed instead of running away. That impressed Grandma more than you know.”
Evelyn laughed softly.
“You should’ve warned me your family’s sense of humor is deadly.”
“I wanted to see if you’d survive,” he teased, “You did great.”
They were just a few steps away from their car when a sudden roar shattered the peace.
The low growl of an engine sliced through the still night.
Headlights cut across the driveway as a sleek black sports car pulled sharply into the front yard, its tires crunching against the gravel.
Axel’s posture changed in an instant.
