Chapter 1451: Desperate Hope
The assassin collapsed, exhausted. He had given everything to his Sect. His loyalty, his pride, and now even his life. But it was never enough. He was always second best.

Even as close as he was to Immortal Rank, he still couldn’t overcome the gap and become the Sect’s favourite.

All their trust, their best assignments, their finest items, they all went to his senior brother. And they were brothers, they had been together for life, and even now, he didn’t regret a single moment.

Given the chance, he would do it again.

His breath rattled as he took his final breath, just in time for a second assassin in black to appear between him and Rae.

The man was obviously limping, and holding a short sword defensively as he kneeled next to the crippled combatant.

“Stay with me, I will get you out of here. You can’t die, you hear me?” He pleaded.

Rae knew this one, he was the first assassin who had clashed with her. But he was weakened, crippled by her attacks in a way that he would never truly recover from.

She had shattered his soul, his body and his mind. No level of healing would ever put him back together the same as he was before.

His thoughts, his emotions spilled over, projected by the [Mind Lock] skill used on a broken mind. Everything that he thought, everything he felt, it was all pouring into Rae’s mind in real time.

And that was the final revelation that she needed. That was the missing part of her understanding of the Fundamental Rule of Pain.

The true agony of losing what you loved.

He knew that he was a useless man now. His spot in life was lost, and at best he could teach children in the future. But it didn’t matter. Watching his only friend die for him was more than he could take.

Satisfied that she had what she came for, Rae tossed them a pair of Mythic Rank healing potions of Remi’s creation.

“Thank you for your assistance. Goodnight.”

Cara smiled as she opened a portal and took them both away, leaving the assassins to recover in the Chaotic Zone for the next half hour until it collapsed.

Once they were gone, the crippled assassin fed his rapidly fading friend the potion, and watched in wonder as his shattered and dissipated soul began to reform in his body, seconds away from being a resurrection and not a healing spell.

The failed attacker gasped as terror and agony seared his veins.

There was no doubt in his mind that he had just been used as bait so that the spider could learn something, but what it was that she was learning was beyond his comprehension.

What he did know was that someone needed to know that the Spider Goddess was about to gain another Immortal follower.

He didn’t care if it would hurt his pride, if he had to admit in public that he had failed his mission. What mattered was that such a horror couldn’t be allowed to roam the world in silence and anonymity.

Others had to be prepared.

“Drink the potion she left for you. If she wanted us dead, she would have killed us before she left. You know what this means, right?” The recovering assassin asked, his voice hollow.

“I know. The Grandmaster has to be told. I don’t know what is going to happen after, but I’m afraid that it won’t be anything good.”

Their existential crisis didn’t concern Rae. She was already in her space, napping, while Cara took over the night watch to ensure that nobody tried to attack the group.

The attention on the Mayor’s house hadn’t been for them, but for local politics. Fortunately, they had found people looking for the Prince earlier, and that meant there could very well be an attack once they started to travel in the morning.

Wouldn’t that be nice? Yes, Rae was looking forward to that opportunity, even in her dreams.

Not long after the Chaotic Zone faded, the two assassins silently returned to their Sect, a small compound outside Namunz in far southern Gathuzan.

“Sect Master, we have dire news to share.” The first assassin that had clashed with Rae whispered.

“Tell me everything.”

They relayed everything as they remembered it, adding to the descriptions the other gave in a practiced process of complete disclosure.

“A Blood Destruction Demonic Spider with an Epic Grade constitution, you say?

There is no doubt that she is indeed favoured by the Spider Goddess. That species does not exist in nature, they can only evolve from the most promising arachnid monsters.

But to have an Epic constitution and a nearly complete understanding of a Fundamental Rule, that’s abnormal.

Too close to Immortality.

However, I do not think that she intends to be an enemy. She’s on a mission to finish her understanding of a Fundamental Rule. You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We sent out people to check on the Prince, and they discovered that it really was coincidence that she was with him.

He had come to try to curry favour with the members of the Darklight Host.”

The two assassins buried their resentment before their Sect Master. That was information that they should have had before they were dispatched. The information that they were given was that there were no exceptional combatants with him, and that his Royal Guard was properly distracted.

The second part was true, but the first was most certainly not.

The Sect Master gave them a sympathetic look. “The informant who failed to mention that he was with the Darklight Host and not simply out with the wastrels of the Capital has been punished.

Retire to your rooms and heal. You have the time that you need.”

Once he was alone again, the Sect Leader sent out a System Message to the most terrifying person on his contact list.

[Immortal Lady, we have confirmation. The Blood Destruction Spider has completed her understanding of a Fundamental Rule. However, there is a new development.

She was confirmed to have an Epic Grade constitution during the last battle.]

[Understood. Your payment is being sent.]
