Chapter 436: Shouldn’t you be on your way home?
“Tch,” Diane folded her arms. “Then, what are you here for?”
“Well—”
*Boom*
A huge explosion interrupted her, as smoke flared into the air and the ground trembled.
Alice held Diane to steady her and then raised her head to look at where the explosion was coming from.
“That…” Diane immediately turned her head and her eyes widened.
They were not very far from it so she was sure of it.
That place… That was the shop where she saw the Gnolls.
“Sam,” she voiced in worry and then bolted in that direction.
“Diane,” Alice grabbed her arm. “Usually, in emergencies like this, people run the other way,” she pointed behind them but Diane clicked her tongue.
“Do you think I don’t know that, dumbass? I’m the smart one here.” She pointed out.
“Then why are you running towards the danger?” Alice asked, looking a bit concerned.
“It’s because that’s the place I’m just coming from. I didn’t confirm it with my own eyes but I’m sure of it. There’s a gate there.”
Leo frowned and looked at Alice. She sighed.
“Is it too much to ask why you’re going towards the gate, then?”
“That’s cause…” She gritted her teeth. “Gosh, I don’t have the time to stand and explain. We’ll talk on the way.”
It looked like she planned to head there regardless so Alice decided not to stop her and ran alongside her.
“Let’s go, Leo.” She said and took to her heels with Leo striding along with just the right amount of distance.
With the ‘Hermes boot’, Diane was able to run as swiftly as the wind. Alice thought it might’ve improved quite a bit from the last time she saw her use it.
Anyway, what was going on that got Diane so worked up?
“Tell me what happened,” Alice demanded but Diane didn’t want to talk about it till they got there.
“I don’t want to get flies in my mouth.” She said and Alice felt irked.
“This punk…”
It didn’t take long before they got there.
It was just a few blocks away anyway.
Diane stopped and paused as she saw the building had been blown to bits and Samson just happened to be standing next to the blue gate that stood above the rebel with tattered clothes.
It looked like he had been caught in the explosion.
“Sam!” She called out and ran towards him.
He turned his head and was shocked to find her there.
“What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be on your way home?” He asked but she smacked his back.
“Is that the first thing you say to someone who’s worried about you?” She growled at him. “What happened?” She looked at his tattered shirt.
It was burnt and there were a few parts that were still smoking.
He looked at her a little dissatisfied but ended up answering since he didn’t want her to worry.
“I wanted to look around before making a decision but when I walked into the staff room to check for the gate, I saw a few Gnolls lurking around.” He said and then raised his head.
He saw Alice and Leo and wondered when they got back to the country.
“Then how did the explosion come about?” She asked, dropping her hands on her hips.
She felt he had been reckless, despite her warning.
“Well,” he avoided eye contact, making her suspicious until he said. “They started attacking, of course, I had to defend.”
“Did you use your brute strength in that tiny space?” She asked, shocked but he could only roll his eyes away. “Ah, why do I feel sorry for the Gnolls all of a sudden?”
“Ahem,”
Alice looked at this and almost threw up. Why was such a bulky man acting gullible? It looked like he was being cute but then again, why?
This thing called love was so suspicious, if anything.
“Anyway, you still haven’t explained how the explosion came about. It even took down the entire building.” She said, referring to her surroundings with her hand.
“One of the Gnolls hit the gas cylinder and it gushed out, headed for the fire that kept burning at the counter. That’s how the explosion came about.” He said and Diane paused.
“Ah, so it’s my fault.” She said with a disappointed expression but he quickly shook his head, reaching for her to hold her hands.
“I’m the careless one so leave it at that. Anyway, I’m not hurt and no one else got involved in the explosion.” He explained. Surely, a mere gas explosion wouldn’t make a dent in someone like him. “Besides, the building would’ve been demolished anyway so we could have easy access to the gate.”
Well, that was one way to put it.
They were lucky that there was some free space around the shop so other buildings weren’t caught up in it.
“Hm, I get the gist of what happened and why you were in such a haste,” Alice said, walking forward and they turned to her. “Hi again, Guild master of the brute guild.”
“Hello, Miss Alice. How have you been?” He asked, following formula protocols and she shrugged.
“Well, I’ve been here and there. So I’m fine, more or less.” She said. “But I also want to let you know that this issue, I’d like to take care of it.” She smiled.
There was a reason why she was headed in this direction as soon as she got back to the country.
Leo had found a way to trace demonic energy. It wasn’t very accurate, though, because they had gone to a few places, but there was nothing suspicious.
It made her wonder if he was even getting it right.
But then the next place happens to be a neighborhood near Diane’s house. She decided to check it, just for safety reasons and not regret it later.
There had been an increment in the demon’s actions, so it felt rather alarming that something was going on in Diane’s area as well.
Alice was on her way there when she bumped into Diane. Or rather, Diane bumped into her.
She wasn’t sure if the demonic energy Leo had tracked had anything to do with this blue gate, but well, there wasn’t any other suspicious gate lying around, so she might as well check it out.
“You want to take over this gate?” Samson asked and she nodded. “May I ask why?”
“Do I need a specific reason to enter?” She asked and he paused.
“No, but…”
The way she had been charging into gates recklessly and without preparation or planning seemed rather reckless, but she had never once come out with a wound or run away from a monster.
So, she seemed unstoppable. She seemed capable of doing anything and was practically a savior that most awakeneds could not compare to.
Still…
“I don’t want to give it to you,” he said and Alice blinked, surprised.
Ah, why though? She would be doing him a favor.
“Is it because of the rewards?” She asked, scratching the corner of her face. “If it’s that, I can give it to you once I’ve cleared it. I don’t really need it and a blue gate reward isn’t exactly much, but —”
“It’s not about the reward.” Samson cut her short.
“Hm?” She couldn’t understand. Then, was it his pride as an awakened or his pride as a man?
Either way, it was messing with her plan.
She folded her arms.
Diane glanced at them, from one to the other, wondering what was up with this tension all of a sudden.
“Hm, then if I force my way into the gate, are you just going to follow me in to bring me out?” She asked, her lips tugging up in a cunning smirk but Samson did not respond. He had to think it over.
Even if it was a blue gate, he wasn’t a man without reason who would underestimate the difficulty of such a cunning gate that spawned in a place no one would suspect.
“I wouldn’t.” He said. “But I might sue you.”
His words were so unbelievable but looking at the look in his eyes, she could tell he was serious.
She clicked her tongue.
What would she do now? It didn’t look like he was going to let her in. What if she sneaked in with the team put together to raid it? No, too dangerous. What if the demons were really behind this and the dungeon’s difficulty changes as soon as they enter?
She wasn’t confident she would be able to save everyone since something unforeseen could just pop up from the ground.
She would at least need to know what she was dealing with.
While thinking of this, her eyebrows would furrow and knit together, her forehead would crease in and then release when it looked like she had come up with a solution, but since that solution wasn’t very good, she would crease her forehead once again.
Diane watched this and sighed. At this point, it was better to take matters into her own hands.
“Sam,” she called. “You know how capable Alice is, so why don’t you want to give her the gate?”
