Chapter 434: The crazy mob supports Alice
The golem outbreak was more or less settled when Alice stepped in to help and entered the dungeon with no preparation of notice.
She not only gave them ways to tackle the issue… Ah, that was Leo… but she also went into the dungeon to take care of the monsters on her own to avoid unnecessary casualties.
And she did all this without asking for anything in return.
She was a real hero.
Talks about how she was a figure worth emulation rose again on the news. Other famous awakeneds were criticised for not being able to do this much.
They were people who had the power, but instead of helping humanity as much as they could, they swam in wealth while dozens die daily due to a lack of proper gate control.
Professional gate analysts and monster tamers were brought into talk shows to express their opinions.
A lot of them had already been bought over by the big guilds, who wanted to try to maintain their reputation somehow, so they talked favorably of the awakeneds and undermined Alice for taking opportunities that should enable other awakeneds to grow, in the guise of helping.
They stated she was using this opportunity to gather up fame, as well as a lot of items and rewards so she could exchange them later for immeasurable wealth. She wanted to exploit the world, they said.
And that real raids happened after meticulous strategic meetings, and that what she was doing was reckless.
They stated a lot of bullshit that some of Alice’s supporters caused a scene in the newsroom, which was live,
“You evil bastards, you just make up stupid excuses and hide behind a chair when Alice is the one saving the world.”
“What fame and wealth? Even if she does do that later, at least she earned it. She’s the one putting in the effort.”
“Even if she demands protection money, we’ll gladly give it since she’s doing the work that you big and stupid guilds should be doing.”
“Have you no shame? I bet she’s not even twenty but she’s doing all this to secure humanity’s continuation with no problem. Say no to unfair opinions!”
The riot was crazy, and there were a lot of protesters who didn’t want to hear crap from these so-called professional analysts.
“If you think that Alice does is easy, go ahead and do it and then swim in the fame and wealth that comes from it.”
Diane chuckled as she watched the news.
To think something big like this was going on because of her friend. If it were just a year ago, she wouldn’t have believed she would be living a free life like this, not to mention a life that has Alice as the talk of the entire world.
Citizens who had been neglected by the awakeneds and were in dire situations had been saved by Alice, and since then, they had been die-hard fans of hers.
She even gave them relief funds and sometimes brought the food instead, for fear that they would be robbed.
They certainly couldn’t stand it when those big guilds were using others to talk badly about her efforts.
“She’s doing quite a lot.” She exclaimed.
She was seated on a couch, wearing shorts and a light top with spaghetti straps.
It had been a while since she began to feel at ease with revealing more parts of her body. Well, she was in her house, anyway.
But that wasn’t the point.
Ever since her experience with Big Stach, a part of her was disgusted with her body even if it had been healed and completely changed with the elixir.
It took a lot of effort from her boyfriend, who tried to comfort her and assure her that her body wasn’t disgusting. Even when he heard about the past she buried deep in her heart… Even as she expected a disgusted reaction from him… He did not do that.
He hugged her and assured her that even dirt came off with water. So there was no way she could hate her body forever.
Because it had been a while so her body was okay now.
He continuously told her things like that and that was the only way she began to embrace the skin that had once been soiled.
“Your friend lives more righteously than her character displays,” Samson said and Diane pushed her head back, smiling at him.
“Keke, yeah.” She cackled. “Even if she’s a bit rough around the edges, her heart is definitely in the right place.”
But when would she come back? It had been a few months and school had already resumed.
And then there was the expedition for the awakened classes. She really wanted Alice to be around during that time.
That was the only way she could feel assured.
Yes, it was a low-level gate, and a few instructors were coming as well, but no one knew what could happen at a gate.
She sighed, placing her phone down.
“What’s the matter?” Samson asked but she shook her head, dropping her leg to the floor.
“I’ll just go out for a walk.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” He offered but she sniggered.
“I’m not a kid, I can go on a walk on my own.” She said.
“I know, but…” She walked towards him and gave him a light kiss on his cheek.
“Nothing’s going to happen. And I won’t go far either so don’t worry much.” She smiled at him and he nodded, “Anyway, I’ll be back before you know it.”
Samson didn’t say but he was worried. There had been talks of strange killings in the area. He heard it had something to do with zombies and then demons… Strange phenomena that didn’t exactly seem strange in the kind of world they love currently.
He was worried she would run into one of those strange things, but if he thought about it, their area had not gotten any reports of such, so he could ease his mind a bit.
Diane got dressed and wore a coat since it was already so cold outside. Early September was just like that. It was said that some places had already started snowing.
‘Snow,’ Diane thought as she walked outside, her hands tucked in her coat pocket. ‘I want to see the snow soon.’
The snow, before, wasn’t something she would naturally look forward to. Rather, she hated it since it brought more cold and made the hideout so chilly. And they didn’t have enough supplies to keep warm, so it was hard.
Though it looked like they were slowly adapting to the cold after living like that for years, there’s no shutting out the cold without some sort of special items or powers.
‘Maybe I should go pester Clarissa so she can make it snow.’ she thought and tittered.
She was wearing her gloves, the ones that she had customized from her gauntlets and they were warm.
Maybe the warmth was because they were naturally gauntlets that released fire.
She walked for a while but then stopped in front of a shop. She could just get a cup of coffee and walk back.
Diane just felt like walking outside and stretching her legs and that was how she walked so far without realizing it.
Her expression softened a bit sadly as she realized it.
“I must really have a lot on my mind,” she muttered to herself and turned, planning to head inside the shop when a snowflake fell on the tip of her nose. “Huh?”
She raised her head and, as if her wish had been answered right away, saw that it was snowing.
Her face quickly lit up.
“Now, isn’t this something?” She felt a little more lighthearted and walked into the cafe, but there was no one inside.
Even behind the cash register, there was no one.
“Are they closed?” She wondered but it didn’t look like it.
There might be no customers, but if they wanted to close the shop, wouldn’t they have at least turned the sign and locked the door?
“Hello?” She called out, heading for the counter. “I want a cup of coffee, anyone?”
Still, there was silence.
It felt a little weird, and she thought that this was usually what happened in horror movies, where things weren’t as they should be.
‘I’m not a protagonist, so I should probably get out of here before I get stuck inside a shitty mess I can’t handle,’ she thought to herself and turned around, ready to take to her heels when she heard a half grunt.
“…ug…lp…”
She paused. First, it sounded spooky. Too spooky. And then the stench in the air. With a little wiggle of her nose, she recognized the smell to be blood.
“Yeah, I’m just gonna leave.” She said but the grunting sound sounded so much louder. It sounded so much like bones crushing, and she could tell what that sounded like very well since she had experienced it firsthand.
She closed her eyes, her forehead furrowed, and her hands clenched.
She probably didn’t know what was going on but from her expression as a movie addict, she could tell something really bad was happening wherever that sound was coming from.
She could just walk away and not get sucked into the mess but what if someone else became a victim after naively walking into this coffee shop?
It gave her no other option.
She took her hands out of her pockets and sighed.
“I swear, I’m no hero. This is just Alice rubbing off on me.”
