Chapter 482: Love like newly weds (1)
At the Collins residence, Alessandra collected the letters sent to her home. She was most interested in the one from Erin.
“Expecting news?” Edgar asked after noticing how quickly Alessandra was to tear open an envelope. “There are better ways to open it.”
“It is from Erin. I’ve been waiting to hear about her separation from Dale. I want it to go well, but I know he isn’t going to let go of earning from her shop. I wish there were some way to help her,” said Alessandra.
Edgar wasn’t interested in finding ways to help Erin. He wouldn’t get in the way of Alessandra offering advice, but he wouldn’t step in to make it go smoothly for Erin.
“Do not get so involved in her separation. I do not need you to be given any ideas.”
“I don’t have any thoughts about leaving you, Edgar. Our marriage is far different from what Erin has. I only want to offer support since it is a stressful time. This matter could have been resolved had he listened to her more,” Alessandra said, setting the letter down.
“It is upsetting to see people who loved each other at one point in time could now hate each other so much. To be fighting each other over money and their home. She wants nothing of his, but he wants all that belongs to her,” Alessandra said, feeling sorry for Erin.
“Such is the trouble of separation. It is a headache and even more of a headache to hear of it when it is not my marriage,” Edgar said, not wanting to hear more.
Edgar was never fond of the Scott brothers and never understood Erin’s interest in them. He could have told her a thousand times it wouldn’t have ended well, but she should have seen the signs.
“Though the murderer has been caught, some of the townspeople still speak of Simon and suspect the Scott brothers had some involvement in what he did since they were so close. Do you think they would be questioned again?” Alessandra wondered.
“I do not know for certain, but Simon’s case is done with. It would be unlikely that someone would open it again. The palace isn’t going to do it simply because of the recent gossip,” Edgar answered.
“I see. You will love me always, won’t you?” Alessandra asked, though she already knew the answer. She always liked to hear Edgar say it.
“Now that you hear of Erin’s troubles, are you going to place yourself in her shoes? There are no troubles in our marriage,” Edgar said, drawing closer to Alessandra. “It would insult me for you to think of me as Dale.”
“I don’t think of you as him. It was a silly question since I know you love me, but I must confess that I once had the thought of what if. Knowing that you love me makes me feel even more grateful. Luckily, if it had ever come to that, I wouldn’t fight you,” said Alessandra.
It would be a losing fight to go up against Edgar when he had so many connections in the palace.
“I wouldn’t want anything from you. Our children are already grown, and I have lived a good life thanks to you,” Alessandra said, appreciative of what she had so far.
“How unfortunate for you. I have already written that all I own would go to you if anything were to happen to me. Let us say for a moment I should forget who you are, you would lose nothing. You will always be well cared for,” Edgar promised.
Alessandra was curious when Edgar did this. “The law would have it that the male relative would inherit everything. I would rather it go to Elijah instead since I don’t need anything. As long as our children are cared for, I am well.”
“I must do this since you don’t think of yourself. I don’t care what the law entails. I have known you longer than our son, and you are far sweeter. I will take care of you first,” Edgar said, taking the moment to wrap his arm around Alessandra’s waist and pull her close.
Edgar noticed a maid coming from the direction behind Alessandra and motioned for the maid to turn around.
“It’s been a while since we had our home to ourselves. It is the bright side of our children getting married and leaving us behind. We shouldn’t let this time pass without enjoying ourselves,” Edgar suggested.
“Our home is filled with servants trying to get it in order. I don’t want them to see something they shouldn’t,” Alessandra replied.
“I can send them away, and they will not object. Do you not remember how we used to enjoy ourselves? You would not have any objections to having me right here in the past.”
“We are not as young as you think we are. One mistake and my back will ache for a week. Do you want to be the one rubbing it? No, wait,” Alessandra said, regretting her suggestion.
“I would gladly rub your aching back for you if I were the cause of it. Age has never been a concern for us, Alessandra. You are still quite young in my eyes. I look at you and see the woman I fell in love with years ago,” Edgar said, seeing an opening to kiss Alessandra’s neck.
While Alessandra wasn’t ready for Edgar’s open affection near the door, she still tilted her head for him to kiss her neck better.
“Then, there is something wrong with your eyes. I certainly feel that I am not so young,” said Alessandra.
“Then allow me to make you feel young again,” Edgar suggested.
“Edgar!” Alessandra exclaimed and pushed on his chest to stop him.
Over twenty years of marriage, Alessandra could not get used to his mouth.
“I would say that there is light out, but the time of day has no meaning for you. With the way you are, others would think that I don’t give you much of my time,” said Alessandra.
“Or, they should see a husband who still yearns for his wife. When will we have the chance to be alone? We have a good two hours on our hands and a library which can be locked. Will you join me when I am already in this state?” Edgar said, trying his best to appear sad.
Alessandra immediately gave in because of Edgar’s expression, and it was true they rarely had time alone other than at night. “It must be quick,” Alessandra said, and as the words left her mouth, Edgar smiled.
Edgar lifted Alessandra into his arms with ease and carried her in the direction of the library.
