Chapter 469: New beginnings (1)
Late into the journey, Penelope had fallen asleep and unbeknownst to her, Tyrion had switched seats so Penelope could rest her head on his shoulder.
“Does my wife truly love it here?” Tyrion asked, using the time to speak with Matilda.
“She does. The lady has many friends here who write to her when she is in Lockwood. There is a different tone to this town compared to Lockwood, but there are still dangers,” Matilda said, hoping the guards wouldn’t be too relaxed.
“Since you have been by her side since you were a young girl, then you have lived here just as much as Penelope has.”
“I have, Your Highness. I have enjoyed the time the Collinses allowed me to be on their estate here. It is quite wonderful and certainly a lot more peaceful than Lockwood. It is why the lady enjoys being here,” Matilda said, glancing at the sleeping lady in question.
“Then, I should stay here forever with her,” Tyrion decided.
Tyrion raked his fingers through Penelope’s hair, something he noticed helped her to sleep.
Matilda was hesitant to say more, but since they were already speaking, she decided to go through with it. “The lady wants to travel,” she said.
“I intend to travel across the kingdom with her. I am not going to rush our plans when I have a lifetime with her. Rest assured that your lady will get all that she desires,” Tyrion said, planning to spoil Penelope.
“Aside from Damien, I entrust my wife to your care. Continue as you do now, and you shall forever have a place in our home. I will reward you handsomely for all the years that you have been loyal to her,” Tyrion promised.
“I do not need a reward. I truly enjoy serving the lady, and she has long treated me well with gifts over the years. I am paid well to not need anything more,” Matilda replied.
Tyrion smiled and understood more of why Matilda had been at Penelope’s side for so long. “She did say you could not be bought. Very well. I’ve arranged for your chamber to be placed on the same floor as our own. I have not seen it, so I apologise if it is not to your liking.”
“Thank you,” said Matilda.
Matilda wasn’t concerned about the room being to her liking. All she needed was a bed and somewhere to rest her clothes.
Still, Matilda was eager to be closer to Penelope, so it wouldn’t take long to reach Penelope when she needed help.
Soon, the long journey came to an end in the late hours of the night.
Tyrion exited the carriage and lifted Penelope into his arms.
The servants were quiet, patiently waiting for the lady to be carried inside before they would begin the task of unpacking the carriage and carts.
Tyrion carried Penelope upstairs in search of what would be their chamber. On his way, he inspected what was done to the home. There was clearly some work to be done, but since they had rushed moving here, they couldn’t fault the workers.
It took two failed attempts of opening doors in search of their bed before Tyrion found the chamber belonging to himself and Penelope.
He carried Penelope inside and placed her on the bed, but when he tried to move, Tyrion realised that she had been gripping his shirt.
Tyrion chuckled. He was faced with a predicament.
To let the servants be able to rest, Tyrion wanted to go down to join in bringing everything inside, but first, he needed to lie with his clingy life.
Tyrion laid down beside Penelope and stroked her hair out of her face. He could hardly wait for Penelope to drag him around the town to show him all that she enjoyed. He wanted to see the places Penelope visited when they had been away from each other.
Tyrion thought of the times she would return to Lockwood and speak of the fun she had here. Now he was here with her, and they were together.
Tyrion stopped his movement when Penelope snuggled closer to him. He didn’t want her to wake since she would also want to help with unpacking.
“Tyrion.”
Tyrion looked down at Penelope, expecting to find her awake, but it seemed she was calling for him in her sleep.
“You don’t want me to leave, do you?” Tyrion softly asked.
How could he leave the bed when Penelope acted this way, and even worse, she wasn’t doing it intentionally?
Tyrion kissed Penelope’s forehead and stayed a little longer before deciding to go help the servants.
In the morning, Penelope woke up to an empty bed once more and got dressed with the help of Matilda. Afterwards, the pair walked in search of Tyrion.
“Tyrion speaks about me needing rest, but twice now I have woken, and he is not in bed. Matilda, where is my busy husband?” Penelope asked, wanting to go right to him.
“I believe he is on the roof trying-”
“Roof?” Penelope shrieked.
Penelope had not brought Tyrion here just for him to slip from the roof and injure himself. How could she face Hazel and Tobias if this were to happen?
Penelope picked up the sides of her dress and made a run for the outdoors.
“Why is he up there?”
Matilda ran along behind Penelope. “There was a leak during the night, so the prince offered a hand to fix it before it became worse. There are others up there with him.”
Matilda didn’t think Penelope needed to worry since all the knights gathered below the roof where Tyrion was to catch him should he fall. Everyone else was already worried and positioned themselves to help him.
“Tyrion lived all his life in a palace. He knows nothing of how to fix a roof. I will not have him injure himself after we’ve only just arrived,” said Penelope.
Penelope ran outside, where many of the servants and knights gathered. Everyone was worried about Tyrion, while Tyrion was more interested in the roof.
“Tyrion!” Penelope’s voice was heard well above the servants’ chattering amongst themselves. “What are you doing?”
Tyrion looked down at his not-so-happy wife. “Helping to fix a leak. We are almost done!”
“Why are you up there? You have never fixed anything in your life, and that is not the place to start!” Penelope yelled so he could hear her.
“I’m starting a normal life as you wanted!” Tyrion yelled back.
Penelope frowned, annoyed that he would mention that now. “Never mind, Matilda. I hope he falls and learns his lesson.”
