Chapter 449: Grief (1)
“For peace?” Tabitha scoffed. “I’ve only ever wanted the best for you, but you always clung to your mother’s side. Had they properly taught you of your duty, we wouldn’t be in this position now.”
“I would understand your feelings if I didn’t have a spare to replace me, but there is one. I hope you understand that the distance you have from the family was caused by you. You did this to yourself, and I am almost certain my grandfather-”
“Do not speak of him!” Tabitha snapped, her hand almost raised to slap Tyrion. “Don’t speak of him when you have not respected his wishes. He passed, thinking that one day you would have the throne. He taught you all that you needed to know just for you to disappoint him.”
“I can always apologise to him in prayer. I did not come here to hash out the past or argue with you. You’ve plagued this family with your stubbornness for too long, and as the oldest, I have to protect my siblings,” Tyrion said, twisting the cover of the bottle as he spoke.
Tabitha laughed, annoyed that Tyrion only took responsibility when it came to his siblings, but never when it came to the kingdom.
“You’ve been married for how long, yet there isn’t any news of a baby.”
Tyrion didn’t let Tabitha rile him up. He was already angry, so there was no more room left for her to anger him.
“The palace needed her family power, but do you want to live with your wife being under Edgar’s command even though you are a prince-”
“It must have pleased you when my mother didn’t have any children for a long time. You must have felt justified in your feelings that she shouldn’t have been queen, only for you to learn that it wasn’t her fault. Yet, when the truth came out, you didn’t take that as a good time to settle your differences,” said Tyrion.
Tabitha had plenty of chances to start fresh and make up for a lot of the mistakes she had made, but she was stubborn.
“Sometimes, I felt there were moments when you wanted my father to be against my mother. It felt like you didn’t want him to love her anymore and take another woman, so it could satisfy your feelings. Now, you tried to place another woman before me because Penelope won’t bend to your will,” Tyrion said, hoping her eyes would open before her death.
If Tabitha were fortunate to live a long life, Tyrion was certain she would do this to his daughter or son should he have any.
“You go to the lowest method to hurt someone who doesn’t want to follow your plans. You hurt us when you should be standing with us. The fact that you don’t see your actions as wrong makes this much easier for me. I’ll apologise to my grandfather for not taking the throne and for getting rid of you,” Tyrion said, turning to Tabitha.
If he needed to grab Tabitha and hold her down to pour the mix into her mouth, he would do it.
Tyrion would be the bad guy and do what no one else in the family could do, just so the family could be at peace.
“None of you will do well without me,” Tabitha said, taking the bottle from Tyrion’s hands.
Tabitha didn’t have any intentions of drinking it yet.
How could she leave the kingdom she cared for in the hands of a family who broke tradition?
Two coronations in a row, Tabitha wasn’t pleased.
When it had been Tabitha’s turn to become queen, she did all that she was told and made the previous queen proud. Tabitha had her differences with her then mother-in-law, but she listened and did what was best for her kingdom.
The queens, as of late, had become stubborn and rebellious, unwilling to accept the wisdom of the queens before them.
“You are sadly mistaken. We will do quite well without you, grandmother. You acted this way because you think we desperately needed you, but we don’t. I wish you a peaceful sendoff,” Tyrion said, standing up from his seat. “The view here is quite nice.”
“Are you prepared for how my son will treat you for doing this? Before he was your father, he was my son. He will never forgive you for it, and I am almost tempted to let you live with that guilt. I should,” Tabitha said, staring at the bottle in her hands.
Tabitha had long grown tired of seeing the Castro name be tarnished. It wasn’t what she and her husband had envisioned for the future. Life was so much better when he was around to be on her side.
With what she considered to be a foolish decision, Tabitha brought the bottle to her lips.
Only when the bottle was empty did Tabitha wipe her lips and look out at the view before her.
“I’m not going to waste another day in my life waiting for all of you to wake up and do better for the kingdom. I’ll die with the memory of the kingdom as it is now before it falls and go be with my husband,” Tabitha said, longing to be with someone who cared for her.
Tabitha hoped that when the royals were no longer respected and the kingdom fell, historians would remember her as the last queen who fulfilled her duty. She was not to be compared to Hazel or whoever they had picked to be the new queen.
Tyrion didn’t respond.
The future of this kingdom was going to speak for itself.
Tyrion took the bottle from Tabitha’s hand and sealed it with the cover. He couldn’t leave any evidence behind.
“I hope you live with this constantly in your mind. Knowing that you were the one who killed me. I hope that my children never let you forget this moment, and you are unable to rest at night. Each time you look at that woman, you should remember me,” Tabitha said, cursing Tyrion.
“She is not that woman. She is Penelope Castro. My wife,” Tyrion said, walking away from Tabitha before his plans changed.
Tyrion still carried a gun with him, and it would only take one shot to end Tabitha’s life.
Tyrion walked toward the door to find a maid. It shouldn’t be long before Tabitha would take her last breath, and the news would spread.
“My grandmother needs water,” Tyrion informed a maid.
From where Tyrion stood, he had a view of Tabitha still sitting in her garden. She looked to be enjoying the scenery to anyone watching from afar, but it didn’t feel long before her body slumped to the right.
