Chapter 496: Why the Zorken Is Dangerous
One reason the Zorken family was once the most powerful family in the secret society was because of its structure. The Zorkens had decided long ago to split their power, which gave birth to the Order.

While the Zorken family focused on economic and state affairs, the Order focused solely on strengthening its military power.

And to build that military strength, the late head of the family had invested heavily in research—multiple research projects and inventions.

“Technology in the outside world has advanced,” Sybil continued, leading Lola through the tour. “From harmless devices like cellphones to machinery to deadly weapons like nuclear arms… the Zorken family contributed to all of it.”

She glanced at Lola with a proud smile. “You’re probably aware of who succeeded in creating the first nuclear weapon.”

“Don’t tell me…” Lola murmured, catching how Sybil’s smile stretched wider.

“He was part of the Order,” Sybil confirmed. “If you visited the Order’s library, you’d even see some of his research there.”

Lola listened quietly, unsure whether she was amazed or alarmed. After all, that wasn’t the only information Sybil had revealed.

There were also a few people—people who had made history or changed the world. Some even made it into history books. Never in her wildest imagination had she thought the very people others praised were members of the Order.

“The Zorken family’s military strength is undeniably strong,” Sybil went on. “With our inventions and research bearing fruit, it could easily change the world. However, not everyone in the Zorken family can fight like those in the combat department.”

Adding to that, Sybil explained that the rumors saying the Zorken family members were all experienced fighters were nothing but rumors—rumors spread by the Zorken family and the Order themselves to scare off anyone thinking of infiltrating their land.

“Nathalie knew that,” Sybil added with a deep breath. “She knew the Order’s weakness and targeted it specifically.”

Lola pressed her lips into a thin line, shifting her eyes to Sybil before glancing at the transparent room beside them. There, she saw several researchers studying a beating heart on the table.

In other words, the island where Nathalie—the main villain in the Bennet–Pierson story—was captured, and the people she had taken hostage, were mostly researchers.

“If you don’t know yet, the late head of the Zorken family couldn’t conceive a child,” Sybil’s voice snapped Lola out of her thoughts. “They had to undergo a complicated procedure to have children. Hence, the existence of their triplets.”

Lola shot Sybil a side-eye as they stopped before another glass cubicle.

“Unfortunately, one decision led to such destruction,” Sybil sighed. “Anyway, this floor focuses on medical breakthroughs.”

“What are they doing over there?”

“They’re studying how the heart reacts to the drug they’ve been developing,” Sybil explained. “We’re hoping we can find something useful. Perhaps a drug or procedure that can basically create soldiers who don’t fatigue.”

“What?”

“Do not worry, Madam,” Sybil said with a reassuring smile. “The research has yet to show any promising results without harmful side effects.”

But it was working?

Lola gulped, unsure what to feel about this discovery. She had been here for a month, yet she was only now uncovering this side of the Order. No wonder Atlas wanted her to take her time.

There was far more here than anyone in the outside world would find acceptable.

Secret society… this was more than politics or a show of power and connections.

Sybil’s face brightened. “There’s more I can show you, Madam. Come.”

With that said, Sybil continued the tour. To Lola’s surprise, the facility had more floors—not only above but below. Although the entire complex was already underground, there were still additional levels beneath it.

In total—if Lola counted correctly—there were at least five floors hidden beneath the castle.

The floor they stood on focused on medical research: drugs, surgeries, procedures, and the like. Important work, but not dangerous enough to be treated as a threat. It was designed to be the “first stop” for anyone entering the facility.

The lower floors focused on bio-weapons and more hazardous research involving viruses, dangerous nano-organisms, engineered DNA, etc. The upper floors handled machinery, weapons, and other inventions.

If Lola explored everything here, it would take her more than a day to fully grasp it all. Sybil barely covered the basics before they parted ways; Sybil heading elsewhere while Lola returned to her study.

Before leaving, Lola had asked Sybil to send her a list of the research. It didn’t take long for the data to arrive. And when it did, Lola found herself staring at what looked like a Christmas tree made out of stacked papers.

Crossing her arms, she ran her tongue along her cheek.

“Had I known this was waiting for me…” she muttered. “I would’ve taken Amala with me.”

Not that she was complaining.

Lola shook her head and snapped her eyes open. Determination lit her face as she nodded to herself.

“For sure… my husband has to learn all of this in the shortest time possible,” she murmured. “I can’t disappoint him.”

With that, Lola began her work, pushing aside every other thought to make room in her mind. After all, Atlas had been in this exact situation years ago. Perhaps even worse.

He had to rebuild the Order and the entire Zorken family. On top of learning the Zorken family’s and the secret society’s way of life, he had to understand his real position in this world and in this family.

And he had to prove himself to everyone.

Which was why Lola eagerly studied everything she could. She knew a single day wouldn’t be enough—not when the information was this dense. If it were easy, she would’ve been done by now.

Hours passed, and Lola didn’t stop. She even felt as if she were reviewing for her licensure exam. Before she knew it, night had settled deeper and deeper, and she had fallen asleep on top of the desk.

The night was quiet when the door creaked open.

Atlas peeked inside. The room was dark except for the desk lamp still lit. His eyes fell on the desk, and he stepped inside, stopping beside it.

His gaze swept over the notes and books scattered across the table, his lips curling into a soft smile. Slowly, his eyes moved to Lola, who had fallen asleep on her notes mid-sentence.

“I told her no rush,” he whispered, glancing over the notes she was writing to see what she had been studying. A shallow breath escaped him as he reached out to gently carry her to bed.

And since Lola had run a marathon that morning and overloaded her mind with information, she didn’t resist or even wake up.
