Chapter 481: Did Someone Try To Kill You?
According to Penny, in her first life, she had fallen into a conspiracy involving their family business, Global Prime Logistics. In that life, Atlas was running the company, and Penny didn’t even have her own. Instead, she had a completely different career, and because she desperately wanted her brothers’ approval, she kept poking her nose into the family business.
Before she knew it, she was taking the fall for something she didn’t do… and was sentenced to death.
As for Finn, he was tangled up in a situation he couldn’t escape from. And in that situation, he was associated with Zoren Pierson—Penny’s husband. Considering the dangerous circles Zoren used to be in, Finn ended up with a bullet between his brows.
In summary, Zoren was at the center of all of it.
And because Zoren had nothing else to do, he poked his nose into Penny’s case and tried to help her. Sadly, Penny still died on her execution date. But their story didn’t end there. There were many things that happened after Penny and Finn’s deaths.
One of them was Atlas falling into an accident while fighting for his sister’s innocence. But in the end, Atlas died by his own hand. A fitting end for someone like himself… or so he said.
But what boggled Lola’s mind even more was that when everything restarted, Penny and Finn already remembered their memories from their first lives since infancy.
Finn and Penny stared at Lola curiously, only for the latter to flinch when someone suddenly joined them. The trio turned to see Slater smiling at them innocently.
“Third Brother?” Penny knitted her brows. “What are you doing here? I thought you were on the main island.”
“I was supposed to be on the main island, but I decided I didn’t want to,” Slater shrugged. “So I was on the shore with Ray. We tested the boats and raced with Second Brother. They left with Haji, though.”
Slater blinked innocently, scanning their faces. “What are you guys talking about? You look a little serious.”
“Nothing!” Lola blurted out, only for Penny to laugh.
“Relax, sis.” Penny waved. “It’s alright. He knows.”
“What?”
“Know what?” Slater tilted his head, his brows rising when Penny answered. “Ahh…”
Slowly, he turned toward Lola, his mouth forming an o-shape. “Wow, sis. Penny, didn’t we agree we wouldn’t talk about it anymore?”
“We did, but she brought it up first!”
“How was I the one who brought it up?” Lola gasped.
“First Brother,” Finn pointed out, shrugging. “She asked about First Brother’s situation because he mentioned he got into an accident. We ended up clarifying it… more than we should’ve.”
Slater nodded, but before he could say anything, Lola leaned back with pure confusion on her face.
“Is this normal for all of you?” she asked in disbelief. “Don’t tell me all of you died horrible deaths and then came back together?”
“Ah, no.” Slater shook his head. “First Brother and Second Brother didn’t get a rebirth. But they were aware… somehow. One way or another, they eventually found out about it.”
His eyes suddenly lit up. “Now that I think about it—it was on this island, wasn’t it?”
“Right…” Penny nodded, only for Finn to comment, “What a coincidence.”
Finn then offered Lola a smile. “As for my wife, she was showing signs of her first life through dreams and nightmares. But with therapy, she’s doing much better now. Honestly, I’d rather she not remember anything. She’s aware this is my second life, though.”
“As for Second Sister, I don’t think Second Brother ever mentioned it,” Penny rubbed her chin. “But knowing him, he probably said it in passing, and Kiara ignored it. Not that there’s anything to confess, because he doesn’t remember his first life either.”
Lola felt like her brain was overloading with these casual revelations that definitely required better timing than being dropped on her like bombs.
“Wait.” She pinched the bridge of her nose, forcing herself to organize her thoughts. When she looked at them again, her face twisted with confusion. “If Atlas doesn’t remember his first life, how did he know what happened to him?”
“Her husband.” Slater pointed at Penny. “Zoren. That sickly guy outlived everyone. He’s the one who gave us the full picture.”
As he said that, Finn, Penny, and Slater all had their faces twist—as if they were each reliving their past lives. Just looking at them, Lola didn’t need more convincing that it must have been awful.
Then Penny turned to Lola again. “Now, back to our conversation. Sis, you don’t remember your first life when you were born?”
“No…?” Lola’s response came out naturally before she could even think.
“Huh?” Slater tilted his head. “Why? Did you try to kill yourself?”
“What?”
“Ah.” Finn rocked his head as realization dawned on him. “Right. Slater also didn’t remember his first life until he almost died.”
Hearing that, Penny pounded her fist gently into her palm. “Actually, Third Brother did die for a second. His heart stopped, didn’t it? So he technically died, and when he was revived, he remembered his first life.”
The three of them turned their attention back to Lola. Curiosity flickered in their eyes along with concern. Considering Lola’s past and the way she grew up, it wouldn’t be surprising if she’d ever attempted to self-exit.
“What?” Lola whispered, her voice barely above a breath. “I didn’t try to kill myself at fourteen. Why did you guys jump to that conclusion…”
She trailed off, realization striking her as her eyes landed on Slater. “You?”
“That’s all in the past!” Slater raised his hands with a cheerful smile. “I’m mentally healthy now.”
“Being unstable made his mental health healthy,” Penny murmured, clicking her tongue.
The revelation rendered Lola speechless. Who would’ve thought? Slater had shone like a star for as long as Lola could remember. He’d been recognized early on, even before articles about Atlas, Penny, or any of his siblings started popping up.
Never in her life did Lola expect that, at one point, Slater had tried to end his own life. That was news. News that changed her view of Slater entirely.
But this wasn’t the time to dwell on that. She shook her head and snapped her eyes back to everyone.
“Believe it or not, there were countless times I wished I were dead,” she said quietly. “But I never tried. I’m too cowardly for that.”
Hence, she turned to Vito and the dangers of the underground world, hoping it would kill her. It didn’t. If anything, she ended up being too good at surviving that hell.
“If you didn’t try that…” Finn frowned, as if reluctant to continue. “…did someone try to kill you?”
