Chapter 480: You Don’t?
What Atlas said might have been something Lola quickly pushed aside when Second came, but it didn’t truly leave her mind. Once she appeased Second’s cravings and played with Chacha, dropping them off at the kids’ play area where Penny’s children were, she made her way out to the back patio.
When she arrived, Penny and Finn were idling there.
“Hey, sis!” Penny’s lively voice echoed, earning a short smile from Lola. “Huh? What—what happened to you?”
Lola blinked, brows furrowed. “What do you mean? What happened to me?”
“Haha. She meant, why is your smile so short?” Finn chuckled, relaxed in his seat. “She can be very demanding.”
“Ahh…” Lola shrugged. “Nothing, it’s just that… I don’t know if I misheard something.”
She paused, snapping her eyes toward the two of them. “What are you two doing here, by the way?”
She thought everyone was here because only the castle’s butlers had been with the children. Atlas stayed behind to discuss something with the butler.
“Nina had a quick meeting,” Finn explained. “She’s staying in our room for a while, but she’ll join us later.”
Penny smacked her lips as she added, “My husband also had an emergency call. He’ll join us once it’s fixed.”
“Oh…” Lola rocked her head. “What about the rest?”
“Slater and Haji went to the main town to buy extra souvenirs since we’re not going there in the next few days,” Penny listed, counting with her fingers. Finn then added, “And Second Brother, Kiara, and Mint went for a stroll. They’ll probably bump into Slater and Haji in town.”
“Ahh…” Lola nodded again. “And Ray?”
This time, Penny and Finn didn’t answer. They just stared at her.
“I don’t know,” Penny finally said.
Finn nodded. “I almost forgot he was with us.”
“Haha… goodness, you guys.”
“Wherever he is, he’s probably stalking Mint,” Penny shrugged indifferently. “Not important.”
She then arched a brow at Lola. “So, sis, what did you mishear? And if it’s about my conversation with Finn just now, you definitely misheard it. I’m not plotting anything to eat Third Brother’s snacks. Not at all.”
“…” Lola stared at Penny, weighing whether to indulge in Penny’s evil plot—which would surely make Slater scream his lungs out—or pretend she didn’t hear it. After a second, she chose the latter and sighed.
“Well, I just think Atlas told me something weird,” she hummed, rubbing her chin. “I saw the secret cabin beside the castle, and he told me that’s where Zoren put him when he was in a coma and left paralyzed.”
She then lifted her eyes back to Penny. “I want to believe I misheard him, but it was clearer than Slater’s dream of ascending to immortality.” She paused, leaning forward with her arms resting on her legs. “Penny, tell me the truth. Has Atlas been in a coma before while dealing with the Secret Society affair?”
But instead of a direct answer, Penny and Finn exchanged a look. Their expressions were unreadable, clearly weighing whether they should answer. Then Penny leaned back and chugged her juice.
Finn smiled subtly. “He’s not talking about his time in the Secret Society, sister.” He paused, took a sip, and licked his lips. “He’s talking about his first life.”
Lola froze, her eyes widening. “What?”
“It’s alright,” Penny huffed heavily. “Sis, you don’t have to hide that you’re living your second life. You mentioned it once—and yes, we know it’s true.”
“…” Lola’s breathing slowed; their words felt like they were peeling away her last remaining shield.
Her rebirth was a secret she intended to take to her grave. After all, if she told anyone about it, who would believe her? That was why, when she hinted at it to her in-laws, she brushed it off, believing she’d covered it up well enough.
So why were they talking about rebirth again?
Finn laughed. “Don’t worry. We’re the same.”
“Same?” Lola snapped out of her tangled thoughts, darting her eyes between Penny and Finn. The duo smiled knowingly, shrugging as if casually discussing the weather.
Then, realization slammed into her like a truck, making her jump from her seat. Her eyes widened, her breath hitching.
Atlas did mention that Penny and Slater were reborn, even summarizing their first lives. He wasn’t the type to make such jokes—or any jokes at all. But she had never dwelled on it with everything going on.
But now…
“I was convicted and sentenced to death!” Penny declared proudly, laughing. Then she pointed at Finn.
“And I was murdered,” Finn added with a small smile. “We turned our lives around, and so far, so good. Penny avoided being the fall guy, and I wasn’t killed.”
His brows rose briefly. There was something in his tone that hinted at more behind his story.
“Sis, don’t be surprised,” Penny waved dismissively. “If you don’t want to believe us, don’t. But that’s the truth…”
She trailed off, brows knitting. “Now that I think about it—if this is your second life, how come you didn’t know we were reborn too?”
“Now that you mention it…” Finn murmured, curiosity gleaming in his eyes. “You also went to the Summit School of Excellence. Penny had a different story in her first life there, and as for me… I didn’t even go there in that lifetime.”
In other words, if Lola remembered her first life… shouldn’t she already know how Penny and Finn rewrote theirs?
Lola’s mouth opened and closed, utterly confused and in disbelief. After a second, she ran her hand through her hair and sat back down.
“Wait.” She cleared her throat, snapping her eyes at them. “Are you… being serious?”
And the two of them nodded.
“As serious as we could be,” Penny stressed. “Sis, do you think we’d even mention it just to—what? Ride your fantasy? If we hadn’t experienced the same?”
“Well… maybe?”
“I’d recommend therapy,” Finn corrected dryly. “If you think I’m as unhinged as her… or as Zoren.”
A moment of silence fell over them as Lola studied the duo. And as if the first question wasn’t enough, she asked again:
“Really?” she whispered. And once again, they nodded.
Penny tilted her head. “I should be the one asking, sis. Is this really your second life?” she asked, studying the confusion and shock mixing in Lola’s expression. “Then how come you don’t know about the changes at Summit Partners? Finn and I both have reasons why we didn’t know, despite remembering our previous lives since birth.”
“Birth?” Lola gasped. “You remembered your first lives since birth?”
This time, Penny and Finn tilted their heads in unison and asked:
“You don’t?”
