Chapter 465: One step to ten
Atlas stood motionless at the small altar, dressed in a white tuxedo. His expression was the same as always—not smiling, not frowning. Stoic. But the moment he saw Lola, that stoic mask softened. His eyes gentled, and the tension in his shoulders eased.

Beside him, his children were also in white. Second wore a miniature version of his father’s tuxedo, while Chacha wore a tiny dress mirroring her mother’s, complete with glittery ruffles on the skirt.

Seeing them made Lola freeze on the spot. Her face softened, and another tear slipped down as she stared at the future waiting for her at the end of the aisle.

“Ready?” Charles asked quietly beside her, waiting for her to turn.

Lola faced him and smiled, nodding. Then she turned to Allison, who was also smiling at her affectionately.

A soft orchestra played in the background, filling the space with warmth. There weren’t many guests — everyone present was someone Lola had met or heard of. Mostly the Bennet family members and a few of their closest friends.

As she took her slow steps toward her groom and her children, her entire life began to replay before her eyes.

One step — the moment she woke up with memories of her past life.

Another step — the memory of being fourteen, gasping as she clutched her chest, overwhelmed by pain she could barely comprehend. The pain that followed as memories flooded her of such a horrible life that she had endured, and was about to face.

Third step — the night she sat alone, eyes filled with resolve, promising herself she would change her future. The night she had promised herself that in this life, she would live a better life. That she would not die, and that she would persevere for a better tomorrow.

Fourth — the days she spent quietly cherishing Loren, grieving in silence because she knew she would lose her one day. So, she allowed herself to keep things slow and have as many memories with her.

Fifth — the moment she cried alone for Loren’s death, only for Jasmine to burst into her room and force chores onto her, ripping away her right to mourn. Just one of the things Jasmine, Melissa, and even Lawrence took away from her.

Sixth — the moment she strengthened her resolve to build a better life, even as Melissa harassed her daily, and Jasmine, Mike, and Derek added to her pain. She promised once more to do better, to stop clinging to the past, and to move forward even when it means crippling herself working multiple jobs to keep herself afloat.

Seventh — the seven words that changed the course of her life. Words she once believed shattered her, only to learn they were the reason she needed to rebuild herself more. Seventh step, seven words tied to a child she loved with all of her heart… and thought she lost.

Eighth — the memory of a life without her child. A dangerous life where she thought she found acceptance, belonging… only to later see she was wrong. That in her quests to find a place in the world, she had lost not just herself but also her freedom.

And… Nine.

The countless battles she fought and won. The freedom she clawed back. Building Taz from the ground up. Achieving dreams she had only dared to imagine. Meeting people like Amala, Haji, and Silo, who helped her rise and who rose with her.

But nine didn’t end there.

Nine stretched long—covering her fall, the unraveling of her life, and the truth that carved pain and clarity in equal measure. The truth that no matter how hard she tried, despite knowing her past life, it was never easy.

Not when everyone—even the one she loved most—took turns playing God with her life.

Nine was the most crucial step, because one misstep, she could see herself falling back to one. Thankfully, despite taking a misstep, someone had her back and made sure she wouldn’t fall back to the pits of hell.

Now…

“Ten,” Lola whispered.

And at that whisper, she stopped walking.

Her lips curved as she looked at Allison and Charles. They smiled warmly at her, and somehow, at the tenth step, her tears had completely dried.

Slowly, Lola turned toward the altar just as Atlas stepped down with Second and Chacha, walking toward her.

Ten.

The last step of the past… and the first step of forever.

After everything—every wound, every battle, every tear—here she was. Taking her tenth step down the aisle. A step toward her groom. A step closer to becoming Mrs. Bennet.

A step away from her past. A step toward a new chapter.

And somehow, in this moment, everything clicked.

Maybe the reason she was given a second life was never to prove that things would remain the same.

Maybe it wasn’t a repeated nightmare.

Maybe this second life was meant to make her survive the nightmare, just so she could see this day.

A day she had never seen in her previous life.

A day she never even reached.

And if that was true, Lola realized she would willingly walk through ten more levels of hell just to reach this moment. This life. This future as Atlas’s wife, and Second and Chacha’s mommy. She would fight a hundred more battles just to keep this vow.

Atlas extended his hand to her, eyes fixed on her.

But Lola didn’t take it right away. Instead, she stared back at him with affection, then looked down at their children.

“Mommy, take Daddy’s hand!” Second cheered, while Chacha clung to Atlas’s leg. “We’ll walk with you from here!”

Lola laughed softly as her children wrapped themselves around their father like tiny, determined limbs. Atlas glanced at them, letting them cling, then lifted his gaze to her.

When she finally placed her hand in his, they turned to face Allison and Charles, bowing respectfully. Then, hand in hand, they faced the altar that was waiting for them to make their vows.

As they walked forward, Atlas leaned in.

“I didn’t write my vows with everyone having their say in them,” he murmured, giving her a sidelong glance. “But I’ll tell you now.”

He squeezed her hand gently. “You’ll never cry again. I won’t be reckless with your heart.”

“…” Lola swallowed hard, fighting the new lump rising in her throat. Her lips trembled before she managed a nod.

“I know…” she cleared her throat and rocked her head. “This time, I am sure.”
