Chapter 458: Serve Them Right
[Flashback]

“Damn.” Haji stared at the ruined grave in surprise. “She really dug her grave, huh?”

Deep in his heart, he knew that if Lola could, she would’ve crawled to hell itself just to confront Loren. Ruining Loren’s grave was too mild considering how crazy Lola could get when pushed to her breaking point. Even Haji wouldn’t mess with her.

Slowly, he snapped his gaze toward the man standing next to him.

The cemetery was dark, the sky barely clearing after the pouring rain. A few people lingered around, but not enough to bother them. From what Haji heard, Lola had been here earlier and had destroyed everything in sight. The aftermath was enough proof.

But he wasn’t here to inspect the storm she left behind.

Haji was here because of this man: Atlas.

“Hey,” Haji called. “Just to be clear, I avoided her all this time. So if she found out about your proposal, it wasn’t me. Ask Silo. He runs his mouth faster than he breathes.”

Atlas didn’t respond.

Haji opened his mouth again — because honestly, he was a little worried about being summoned in the middle of the night — when he noticed someone approaching.

He turned his head, brows knitting when he saw Amala.

Amala stopped a few steps away, glancing at Haji and then at Atlas. Once their eyes met, both she and Haji shifted their attention back to where Atlas stood.

Moments later, Amala quietly joined them. She didn’t say a word, her eyes sweeping over the destroyed surroundings—not only the newly dug-up grave, but the mud smeared everywhere from the rain earlier. Just the sight of it was enough to make her heart clench.

This aftermath alone was enough for her to see Lola’s pain.

“I’m going to take her away from here,” Atlas finally said after a long silence, lifting his sharp eyes to Amala and then to Haji. “Knowing her, she’ll eventually ask you two to join her. But I believe both of you are in a more sound state of mind. You understand the responsibilities she has in Novera.”

Neither Haji nor Amala spoke, fully aware of what Atlas meant.

“But that’s not the reason I called you here,” Atlas continued. “I trust that Lola wouldn’t abandon everything irresponsibly. However, I also know she would spare those people.”

He paused, shifting his focus to the grave. “Just like how she spared this grave.”

Lola might’ve dug up Loren’s grave and smashed the coffin. But she hadn’t broken Loren’s skeleton. This didn’t surprise Atlas at all. Lola was like that. No matter how hurt she was, she wouldn’t forget Loren or the woman’s shadow over her life.

This also applied to the Young family.

No matter how they hurt her, Lola never retaliated with equal cruelty. If anything, she retaliated with grace, preserving her own sanity. But she never returned their level of viciousness.

“If it were me, I would’ve ordered their heads,” Atlas said quietly, eyes still on the grave. “Out of sight, out of mind.”

It wasn’t that he valued life lightly. But with everything the Youngs had done to Lola, he believed the simplest way to erase them was death. And Allen had been right. Killing them would be too easy. It would be mercy.

And mercy was the last thing Atlas wanted to give these people.

“But death is mercy,” he added, turning squarely toward the two. “I had my men investigate Lawrence Young’s so-called suicide attempt, and some things weren’t adding up.”

Amala nodded calmly. “We’ll handle it from here.”

“What are we handling exactly?” Haji asked, shoving his hands into his pockets, clicking his tongue. “I’m a little confused.”

“Justice,” Amala stressed sharply, snapping her eyes at the reluctant Haji. “That’s what we’re handling.”

Haji shrugged. “Not that I’m refusing to be a team player, but what if you’re wrong?”

“Does it matter?” Amala tilted her head, shifting her gaze to Atlas. “Does the truth matter to you, Mister Bennet?”

“No.” Atlas pulled out a small USB and handed it to her. “Do whatever you need to. All I ask in return is to make sure those people end up wishing I killed them instead.”

Amala and Atlas stared at each other until she nodded. Atlas nodded back before walking away, knowing he needed to be home when Lola woke up. Besides, he trusted these people. If Lola trusted them, so would he.

They were on the same page, even Haji, who only acted reluctant.

As Atlas left, Haji let out a harsh exhale. He snapped his gaze to Amala, smacking his lips.

“Amala,” he said coolly. “Are you planning on framing the Youngs if the investigation points the other way?”

“They would’ve framed Lola without a hint of conscience,” Amala replied coldly. “So why would I hesitate?”

“Because Lola wouldn’t want us framing someone wrongly?”

“Then she doesn’t have to know. And this is something we’ll take to our graves.” Amala closed her fingers around the flash drive, her eyes drifting across the ruined graveyard. Her heart tightened imagining Lola’s pain, screams, and tears.

If the truth already hurt them — who only witnessed it — then the pain Lola went through must have been a hundred, a thousand times worse.

“But knowing the Youngs… I don’t think we’ll need to do much,” she murmured, narrowing her eyes. “I’ve always wondered why someone like Lawrence Young would try to kill himself when that man was a coward through and through.”

Haji rocked his head, lips twisting with frustration. “Lola’s situation makes me want to relapse and start smoking again — damn.”

“I’m just glad Atlas is here,” Amala whispered, making him turn toward her. “Otherwise, you and I wouldn’t be handling this. We’d be handling Vito’s problems. That man kept trying to take her back, and he would’ve succeeded, just like how he did during her most vulnerable days.”

If not that, then they’d be dealing with something even worse.

Silence fell over them with the hum of the night breeze and the scent of damp earth filling the air. But beneath that silence, their resolve hardened.

They would deliver the Youngs’ retribution themselves.

And now, in the present, they had.
