Chapter 440: Final Chapters of Her Life
“I’m so tired.”

Lola lay on the grass, almost gasping for air. She barely had time to catch her breath after playing with the twins the whole time.

They’d played before, of course, but this was the longest they’d ever gone. As she huffed, soft giggles rang out beside her.

“Mommy, you’re out of shape,” Chacha pointed out cheerfully. “Don’t worry, we’ll be supporting you in your marathon during our honeymoon.”

Normally, Lola would’ve reacted differently, but this time she just smiled and nodded.

“Go take a bath,” Atlas said from beside her on the lawn, his tone calm but firm. “It’s almost time to bathe.”

Chacha pouted while Second frowned. Just to be sure, Second crawled closer to his father and checked his wristwatch. When he saw the time, he perked up and exchanged looks with his sister, only for their father to add coldly:

“Your mother is tired. Do it yourselves.”

“Aww, man…” both twins sighed heavily, making Lola sit up with a soft smile.

“I’ll join you for dinner,” she promised. “And I’ll even sleep with you tonight, okay?”

At that, the twins’ faces lit up. They nodded eagerly and dashed toward the bathroom. As their little feet disappeared inside, Lola’s smile lingered, fond and full of warmth. Atlas, still seated beside her, simply watched her with quiet satisfaction.

“Tired?” he asked, his voice softer now.

“A bit,” she admitted, collapsing onto her back again with a content smile. “But I’ve got five years’ worth of play dates to make up for.”

She turned her head toward him, her lips curving wider. “It was fun.”

For a moment, silence fell between them as their eyes met. After a beat, she looked away and gazed up at the sky. The clouds were sparse, glowing orange against the fading blue of sunset.

“I’d rather be tired like this,” she murmured. “Feels worth it.” Her breathing evened out, and her smile widened until her eyes squinted. “Atlas, I’m happy.”

She looked back at him again. “Thank you… for making things better for me. And for letting me find out about last night on my own, instead of being the one to tell me.”

“You’re welcome.”

“How did you know?” she asked curiously. “I mean, how long have you known about Jasmine and me?”

Atlas shrugged. “After I took you to the hospital because of Lawrence Young’s self-harm attempt.”

Meaning, he hadn’t known for long.

Lola’s brows furrowed slightly as curiosity flickered in her eyes. Seeing the expression on her face, Atlas sighed quietly.

“I followed you and watched things unfold from the sidelines,” he explained. “It seemed… odd.”

“How so?”

“Everything,” he said simply. “Then Allen took samples—yours and theirs—secretly, just in case. That’s how I found out.”

“Oh.” Lola nodded slowly in understanding.

To be fair, she wasn’t angry at Atlas—not even a little. She understood him. She expected this from him, in fact. After being with him for so long, she’d realized Atlas had a kind of emotional intelligence few men did. Whenever he made a decision, it was never selfish. It always took others into account.

And this time, that “other” was her.

“I see,” she said softly, smiling. “Did you know that Melissa would reveal everything to me?”

“I had my expectations,” he replied.

“And she didn’t disappoint, huh?” Lola hummed, glancing away with a faint smile. “Atlas.”

“Mhm?”

“How did you know I’d rather hear the truth from anyone else but you?”

“Instinct.”

She laughed, touching her forehead at the answer, and he smiled faintly in response.

“Well,” she said, smacking her lips in amusement, “your instincts are right.”

Even though Atlas had known her true parentage, Lola preferred hearing it from someone else. Why? Simple—because it was embarrassing. Although Atlas had indirectly caused her to find out, everything had unfolded better than if he’d said it outright.

If it had come from him, she doubted she could’ve faced it head-on.

“I told Penny that delivering bad news to you wasn’t my role,” Atlas said after a pause, waiting until she met his eyes again. “And this is the last bad news I’ll ever let hit you.”

Lola smiled softly. “Promise?”

“Mhm.” He reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her cheek. “I promise.”

Her eyes glimmered with affection, her love for him deepening with every heartbeat. Her family had hurt her in ways no one else could, but this man… this man healed what they broke.

And because of him, she was grateful for her second chance at life.

“We’re leaving,” Atlas said after a quiet moment. “I’m taking you to Anteca later.”

Her brows lifted slightly, lips pursing in thought. He caught her hesitation immediately.

“You don’t want to?” he asked.

“No, that’s not it.” She huffed softly. “Can we leave tomorrow instead?”

“Why?”

“Because…” she looked away for a moment, her tone gentle but firm. “I have something I need to do first.”

Atlas raised a brow, studying her expression as her smile faded, but her sincerity remained.

“I see.” He nodded. “Then tomorrow it is.”

“For now,” she asked, turning to him again, “do you want to come with me?”

“Where?”

The only answer she gave was a small, secretive smile.

Atlas should’ve known where she planned to go, but by the time he realized, it was too late.

They stood before the ruined grave of Loren. Atlas glanced sideways at her; the aftermath of Lola’s outburst the night before was still visible. He hadn’t ordered anyone to fix it.

Lola, however, stood still with her eyes closed, as though in prayer. When she finally opened them, her voice trembled softly.

“I don’t forgive you,” she whispered. “Not yet. But what you did to me… last night will be the last time it ever hurts me.”

She shook her head gently. “Mom…” she breathed out a bitter smile. “Remember when you helped me bake those chocolates?”

Her gaze softened as tears welled faintly. “I’m marrying him,” she said quietly. “From this day forward, I’ll live life on my own terms—choose my poisons, fight my own hells—and even then, I’ll be happy, even if it makes me bleed dry.”

“As for your daughter… karma already caught up to all of you,” she continued, exhaling deeply. “My life, from this moment on, will have nothing to do with any of you. Thank you for the memories, but I’m letting you all go now, for myself.”

With that, Lola bowed her head respectfully. When she straightened, Atlas spoke coolly.

“This is the last time she’ll be here,” he said, his gaze on the broken tomb. “Good luck—wherever you are.”

Lola smiled faintly and turned to him. She extended her hand, which he clasped firmly. Together, they walked away hand in hand.

“Thank you,” she whispered, resting her head against his shoulder as they left. “For making my last memory here… a good one.”

Atlas looked down at her, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. And just like that, they closed this chapter of her life together.
