Chapter 437: Mine
“That makes us three!”

“Eh?” Lola blinked, darting her eyes between Slater and Penny. When her gaze landed on Atlas, all she saw were the twins jumping down from their seats.

“Mommy, we’ll just wash,” Second hummed. “We already packed our things for our honeymoon.”

“I’m so excited for our honeymoon~” Chacha sang, skipping beside Second. “Second, what do you think we’ll do on our honeymoon with Mommy?”

“I signed her up for a triathlon,” Second beamed proudly, the air around him practically sparkling. “I also signed up Uncle Haji for the ultra challenge.”

Lola’s face twitched. She could already imagine Haji’s expression once he found out. But that wasn’t the issue right now.

Turning back to the group, Lola forced a smile.

“You guys…” She exhaled shallowly, laughing it off as she waved a hand. “That’s not what I meant. I meant it’s like my second life — you know, with Vito and the underground.”

“Ohh…” Penny and Slater’s mouths formed identical O-shapes as they nodded in sync. “That’s what you meant.”

“Anyway,” Lola said, smiling awkwardly. “What do you guys mean by ‘that makes us three’?”

This time, Penny and Slater didn’t answer immediately. They looked like they were choking.

“I didn’t know you two had some sort of life-and-death situation,” she added, arching a brow.

At that, both of them laughed nervously, looking away.

“Actually,” Penny began while scratching her cheek with her index finger, “my life was horrible until I met my husband — it’s basically my second life! Besides, I did mention I used to live in a lab. Doing rocket science sometimes leads to dangerous situations… especially chemical reactions.”

“Me too!” Slater raised his hand dramatically, earning a suspicious look from Lola. “I mean, every day is a battle for me. Don’t you guys follow my social media? The life of a celebrity is dangerous — too many crazy fans out there.”

Yet all he got was a pair of unimpressed looks from the women.

Crazy fans? Truth be told, everyone knew Slater was far crazier than any of them. Even the paparazzi had long given up on him, leaving him to his own chaos. Then again, no one dared to mess with him — not when he came from this family.

“I see.” Lola decided not to question it and cleared her throat. “Well, that’s what I meant, too.”

“Us too—hehe!” the duo laughed, suddenly acting like they hadn’t been trying to kill each other over snacks a few minutes ago.

But then, Atlas spoke coldly. “They’re lying.”

His words froze the entire room.

Lola turned to him with furrowed brows. “Excuse me?”

“They’re lying,” he repeated evenly, pointing at Penny. “In her first life, she was a convict. And Slater? A fallen star whose only outstanding quality is his face.”

Penny and Slater immediately wrinkled their noses and glared at him.

Atlas ignored their protests and continued, his eyes fixed on Lola. “You don’t have to worry about that. It’s not news to us. And it’s not just the three of you, Slater — it’s four. Don’t forget about Finn.”

He spoke so casually, it almost sounded like he was listing grocery items. “Anyway, if you’re truly fine, Penny brought the DNA test results regarding you and the twins. No one could’ve tampered with them. She supervised everything personally.”

For a second, the room fell utterly silent. Penny, Slater, and Lola just stared at him in disbelief.

Even his siblings — who’d grown up with him — were speechless.

He said all of that in one breath. Couldn’t he, at the very least, space out the bombshells?

When none of them responded, Atlas’s brows slightly creased. He looked between Penny, Slater, and Lola.

“What?” he asked blankly. “Did I say something shocking?”

The three: “!!!!”

*****

It took a while before Lola could recover from everything Atlas had said. She didn’t know whether to dwell on his first remark and take it as a joke, or to focus on the mention of the DNA results, which made her both nervous and hopeful.

In the end, she chose to focus on the latter.

After breakfast, the group gathered in Atlas’s study. Lola sat on the couch, Penny across from her, Atlas in his armchair, and Slater leaning against the desk with his arms crossed.

Lola swallowed hard, holding the envelope in both hands. Her fingers trembled slightly.

“Penny, this is the actual result of the DNA test we had?” she asked again, lifting her gaze to her sister-in-law.

Penny nodded with a reassuring smile. “Yes. It took me a while since I had to be extra careful. The test itself was easy, but making sure no one else touched it except me or someone under my direct supervision was the tricky part.”

God knows how meticulous Penny could be when she cared about something. After hearing about the first test — the one Atlas suspected had been tampered with — she wasn’t about to let history repeat itself.

“Have you seen the result?” Lola asked softly.

Penny shook her head. “No. Whatever’s in there… I think you and First Brother should be the first to see it. I may be nosy, but I can be nosy later.”

“Sis, check it now,” Slater urged from his spot. “I’m dying to know already.”

And God also knew he’d been pestering Penny and Atlas nonstop about it since morning. He was desperate to know whether the twins were really Lola’s.

“I see.” Lola pressed her lips together and turned to Atlas. When their eyes met, he gave her a small nod of encouragement.

Taking a deep breath, she nodded back and carefully opened the envelope. Her hands trembled slightly as she unfolded the paper inside.

“I’m nervous,” she whispered, biting her lip. “My hands feel sweaty.”

Just like last night, a single piece of paper had the power to change her world. But this time, she was ready.

Deep in her heart, she knew that even if the results weren’t in her favor, nothing would change. She would still love and care for the twins — still want to be with Atlas.

She was willing to be their mother, whether or not they were bound by blood.

Drawing one last steady breath, Lola unfolded the paper and let her eyes travel to the heading, then down to the bottom line.

The second she read the result, she froze.

Everyone watched closely, waiting for her reaction. Even Atlas, who was confident about the outcome, felt a flicker of worry at her silence.

When Slater couldn’t take it anymore, he asked, “Sis, what is it?”

Lola just stared at the paper, unmoving.

After a long moment, she lifted her gaze to Atlas. Her eyes glistened as her lips quivered. Then, in a trembling voice, she spoke.

“They’re mine.”
