Chapter 429: Everyone Knows Except You
Having Melissa message her about Lawrence’s condition was surprising. Lola hadn’t expected that at all. Ever since she arrived, she hadn’t seen Melissa until now.

“What?” Lola asked after a tense moment of silence between them. “Angry again?”

Was Melissa about to start her nonsense once more?

Melissa cleared her throat, her chin tilted high, and her sharp eyes trained on Lola.

“I checked on him, and if that bothers you, then you don’t have to tell me next time,” Lola said calmly. “Knowing he’s going to live is good enough for me. Just make sure to keep an eye on him. I heard people like that are most likely to do it again.”

Having said that, Lola turned on her heel to leave, but her steps halted when Melissa’s voice followed.

“You don’t have to tell me what to do or how to take care of my dad,” Melissa said coldly, her eyes glinting as she stared at Lola’s back. “I’ll look after him because he’s my father. My blood is the same as his… unlike someone else’s.”

Lola frowned and looked back at her. She scowled, running her tongue along her inner cheek. So that was it. Melissa was basing her insult on the fact that Lola’s blood type didn’t match Lawrence’s.

“You’re tired,” Lola pointed out flatly. “Since you’ve donated blood, you should rest as much as you can. Why not ask your mother to take turns watching him?”

Melissa sneered. “How could I ask my mother…?”

“I don’t know.” Lola shrugged. “She’s your mom. You’d know better than I would.”

With that, she started walking away again until Melissa’s quiet but cutting words stopped her mid-step.

“She’s dead.”

Lola froze, confusion flashing across her face as she turned back to Melissa. That was not something she expected to hear. No matter how horrible Melissa could be, she had always been a filial daughter. A brat sometimes, yes, but never disrespectful toward her mother.

Melissa slowly raised her head, walking toward her. Her hands were balled into tight fists, her chest rising and falling with each breath, and her eyes burned with restrained fury.

“My mother’s dead,” Melissa said through gritted teeth. “How could I ask her to help me when she’s no longer here?”

“Melissa, I don’t know what’s going on between you and your mother, but I don’t think you should be ‘killing’ her off when she’s very much alive—”

“Loren Young.”

Melissa’s voice quivered as she ground her teeth, trembling with rage. “Loren Young is dead. My mom is dead, and you—”

Her neck tightened, veins standing out as Lola’s brows furrowed deeply.

Confusion etched across Lola’s face. “Melissa, have you lost your mind?”

“No!” Melissa screamed right in her face. “Lola Young—no, you’re not even a Young! You are… you are…”

Melissa opened and closed her mouth, struggling to find her words. So many emotions swelled in her chest that she didn’t know where to begin.

“Melissa!”

Jasmine’s voice suddenly thundered from the hallway. Both women turned to see her rushing toward them.

Jasmine grabbed her daughter’s arm, yanking it harshly. “Melissa, what are you doing?!”

Lola instinctively stepped back from the mother and daughter, her heart pounding. The things Melissa had said—half nonsensical, half cutting—were enough to make her entire body tremble.

How dare this woman even talk about Loren?

“Let me go!” Melissa screamed, tearing her arm away. She stumbled back, tears spilling down her face as she darted her gaze between Jasmine and Lola. “It’s true, isn’t it?! I heard you talking!”

She pointed at Lola, her voice cracking. “This woman is not related to my dad!”

“What?” Lola scoffed. To her, Melissa was simply unraveling, slinging whatever she could to wound her. But when she turned to Jasmine, her brows drew together.

Jasmine’s expression… wasn’t denial. It was fear.

“Melissa, what are you talking about?” Jasmine stammered, panic clear in her tone. She reached for her daughter’s hand, but Melissa swatted it away.

“Melissa! What’s wrong with you?!”

“What’s wrong with me?!” Melissa’s voice rose in anguish, echoing through the corridor and drawing attention from nearby nurses. Her eyes burned, flicking between the two women standing before her.

“All my life, I had to carry the shame of being the product of infidelity,” she cried. “But it’s not me!”

Consumed by emotion, Melissa lunged forward.

“It’s your fault! It should’ve been you, not me!”

Before Lola could react, Melissa’s hand shot out to strike her. But much to her shock, someone stepped in between them.

Lola blinked, stunned, as Jasmine suddenly stood in front of her, her back turned, taking the blow meant for her.

“What… are you doing?” Lola whispered, watching Jasmine look back at her with equal disbelief.

It wasn’t as if Lola needed saving. She could have easily dodged or stopped Melissa. But she had never expected Jasmine to jump in front of her to protect her.

That had never happened before.

Jasmine? Protecting her? This was the same woman who had always been the first to hurt her, not shield her. The one who used to laugh at her misery.

“Hah!” Melissa scoffed bitterly, her tears mixing with a twisted smile. “See?”

She took a step back, glaring at both women with raw contempt. “It’s your fault, Jasmine,” she spat. “You deceived my father, you took everything—and now, do you think I’ll let the two of you be happy? After ruining my life?”

Jasmine’s heart ached as she looked at her daughter helplessly. Even knowing Lola was her biological child, she couldn’t simply stop loving the daughter she had raised. That love—tainted and misplaced—was the very reason her anger toward the late Loren had festered so deeply.

Because Loren had made her love Loren’s child… and hate her own.

“What in the world is wrong with the two of you?” Lola finally blurted out, utterly bewildered by the chaos unfolding before her.

Her question cut through the tension, making both women freeze.

Jasmine turned toward her, the usual mockery and disdain gone. In its place was something Lola had never seen before: helplessness and conflict.

As for Melissa, she let out a broken laugh, her tone sharp and mocking. “Why don’t you ask Atlas Bennet?” she sneered. “He knows exactly what’s going on. Or that doctor. Or maybe the nurse down the hallway, Lola. After all, everyone already knows… except you!”

Lola’s heart pounded as confusion twisted deeper inside her. “Know what?” she asked, her gaze shifting from Melissa to Jasmine.

Jasmine forced a smile, a soft, trembling thing that looked painful on her face. “It’s nothing, Lola,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s just that—”

“That you’re not Lawrence Young’s daughter,” Melissa interrupted sharply, her anger flaring again at her mother’s attempt to protect Lola. “Nor are you Loren Young’s daughter. In fact, you’re not related to either of my parents at all.”

She took a breath, her voice lowering but filled with venom.

“Because your mother—Jasmine—never carried my father’s child.” Melissa laughed, eyes shining with ridicule, and each word meant to hurt Lola. “Ask them. They know. Atlas Bennet knows. Doctor Tyler knows. Everyone knows… except you, Lola. I guess you’re not that smart, after all.”
