Chapter 414: What Have They Done?
Jasmine and Loren had gotten pregnant almost at the same time, with Jasmine’s due date a week earlier than Loren’s. But since Jasmine needed a believable timeline for her pregnancy with Lawrence, she was forced to keep the child.
It was nothing but sheer will, enduring pain just to make a lie convincing.
As for Loren, she had planned to give birth earlier. But because of Jasmine’s stubbornness and perseverance, the two ended up giving birth only a day apart. Jasmine tried to hold on, but she eventually had to deliver her baby. Loren, on the other hand, gave birth soon after.
And once the children were delivered, Doctor Tyler had to make a decision.
A decision he wished he hadn’t made. But regret always comes at the end, never the beginning. So, he did it.
He kept his promise to Loren and swapped the children, convincing himself it was to “protect” Loren’s child from Jasmine. He knew it was foolish and that Loren had asked it of him out of anger. But like the saying goes, regret comes only at the end, not the beginning.
The act was done.
The baby who reached Jasmine’s arms was the one Loren delivered. The baby given to Loren was Jasmine’s.
At first, Loren was cold toward the infant in her room. Even after delivery, Lawrence never visited her. He spent all his time in Jasmine’s room.
Did her plan make her happy?
Doctor Tyler could say it didn’t. If anything, Loren seemed empty about the whole situation.
For a while, he was the one who cared for the baby in Loren’s room. He fed her, carried her, and looked after her. It was almost as if he were the father, while the mother only stared blankly out the window.
It wasn’t surprising. Loren knew the child in her arms wasn’t her daughter—it was the daughter of the woman who ruined her marriage.
When did she change?
It was after she was discharged. Even then, Lawrence was nowhere to be found. The only ones who cared for Lola were a trusted nanny—Aileen’s mother—and Doctor Tyler, who visited occasionally.
He couldn’t say when Loren softened toward Lola, but he remembered visiting once and finding her cradling the baby.
“She’s adorable, isn’t she?” Loren smiled faintly, letting the child’s tiny hand clutch her finger. Her eyes softened as she looked up at him. For a moment, the woman he once knew seemed to have returned.
“Tyler,” she whispered. “What have I done?”
That question was akin to a dagger to both their hearts, because Tyler had been asking himself the same thing.
What had they done?
Loren’s fury toward Jasmine and Lawrence’s betrayal had consumed her so completely that by the time she realized it, it was too late. They had already played God with an innocent life. Out of guilt, Loren cared for Jasmine’s daughter and treated her as her own.
Since the child would never be loved by her real parents—because of Loren—she swore to love her to make up for it. But years later, Loren was diagnosed with a terminal illness. When she learned that, she knew Lola would live a miserable life after she was gone.
And she was right.
Life without Loren was hell. Or rather, hell was an understatement. Because the life Lola had to endure was something even Loren herself wouldn’t survive.

[Present Time]
“If only we could turn back time, we would have,” Doctor Tyler breathed out. Surprisingly, he felt the guilt he had carried for years finally start to lift. “Even with her last breath, she regretted playing God and rewriting someone else’s life just because she was angry at Jasmine.”
Atlas didn’t react. He just sat there, expression unreadable, staring at the man across from him.
It was rare for Atlas to wish for a different reality, but right now, he wished this were all just a cruel joke.
But it wasn’t.
He knew, deep in his bones, that this atrocity was Lola’s reality. And he had never felt such fury in his life.
“To protect her child…” Atlas scoffed. “Loren Young didn’t do that to protect her child, Doctor Tyler. She did it to get what her husband never gave her—affection. And she succeeded.”
Loren’s real daughter, Melissa, was pampered by Jasmine and Lawrence. Even without knowing her real mother, Melissa grew up comfortably, with everything she wanted and needed.
It was the kind of life Loren would have wanted for her own daughter.
As for Lola, she was mistreated by both her parents. She had to endure Melissa’s constant scheming and had no idea that the woman she lovingly called “mother” was the one who made her life miserable.
It was sickening.
And if this was enough to turn Atlas’s stomach, what more when Lola found out?
Her world would collapse. She would question her very existence.
Atlas’s body trembled with emotions he could barely contain.
“She deserved it,” he said after a long silence, his voice low and cold. “Dying with nothing but guilt she could never erase. Loren Albert deserved to rot in hell.”
If she were alive, he would have burned her himself.
Slowly, Atlas rose to his feet and looked down at the man.
“I suggest you send your resignation and retire,” he said evenly. “You won’t hold your license for long.”
With that, he turned to leave.
Doctor Tyler shot up from his seat. “Mister Atlas!” he called, making Atlas pause. “Are you going to tell her?”
Atlas glanced over his shoulder.
“She doesn’t have to know,” Tyler said hesitantly. “I know this is selfish, but… if she’s happy now, she doesn’t have to go through this. Please, spare her from this.”
Hearing that filled Atlas with rage. He clenched his fists, barely restraining himself. He had never wanted to punch someone so much in his life.
Before he could respond, his phone vibrated against his chest. He checked the caller, only to see it was one of the bodyguards stationed with Lola.
He answered immediately.
“Sir,” the man on the other end said quickly, “Miss Lola—the Young Madam—got into an accident. She’s being rushed to the hospital!”
