Chapter 407: Do It Now
“We managed to save him, but he lost a lot of blood. Upon checking, the patient has a rare blood type. We contacted the blood bank, but they don’t have sufficient units of that type.”
While Melissa felt utter relief at those words, Jasmine and Mike froze.
When Jasmine heard that, her eyes dilated. She and Mike had left Lawrence for a while after he fell from the second floor; she’d called an ambulance later, just to be sure he had no chance of surviving.
But the doctor’s news made her entire world stop.
“Chances are he shares the same blood type as his children.”
Her breath hitched as if those words were gongs in her ears. The doctor’s next sentence made her blood run cold. Jasmine had never thought Lawrence had a rare blood type—none of them had ever needed a transfusion before.
“Take mine.”
Jasmine knitted her brows and turned to look at Lola. Lola stared at the doctor without hesitation; there was no trace of anything but a willingness to save Lawrence. Yet it didn’t look like the desperate plea of a child.
Lola’s words—”I’m his daughter too. We might be a match. Please take mine…and save him”—sounded more like someone who simply wanted Lawrence alive.
No, Jasmine thought. No—you can’t. You can’t save him.
She panicked and looked at the doctor, who nodded. Then Melissa stepped forward and hissed.
“No! How could you—Lola, do you really want my dad to die?!” Melissa screamed. “You pushed him to this point, and now you want to save him?! Are you a sadist?! What do you think Dad would feel when he finds out the person who pushed him to his limits is the same person trying to save him?”
“Are you stupid or what?” Lola returned coldly. The question caught Melissa off guard; she stammered, unable to reply. “Didn’t you hear the doctor? His blood type is rare. The chances that his children will share it are higher. His survival rate is better if we test now rather than wait for that type to become available in the bank.”
The doctor nodded and added patiently, “But there’s no guarantee she’ll be a match. It’s best if both of you get tested.”
“No!” Melissa shouted. “We don’t need her in our lives! She’s the one who ruined us—”
“Melissa, if your father dies, this time it’ll be on you,” Lola said under her breath, arching a brow. “It’ll be your fault—his death will be in your hands…because of that pride of yours.”
Melissa blinked, shaky. “What?”
“Get both of us tested,” Lola said, shifting her gaze to the doctor. “She’ll agree once she stops crying.”
The doctor offered a short smile and nodded. When he turned to Melissa, his brows rose a little. “Is that all right with you?” he asked.
Melissa opened and closed her mouth; her whole body shook and her mind scattered. She couldn’t think straight, but deep down she knew what she had to do.
She nodded.
Then Jasmine suddenly spoke.
“No,” she whispered. “Just take hers. Not Melissa’s.”
Everyone’s eyes turned to her. Her breath hitched as she swallowed.
“Why?” Lola arched a brow. “Why don’t you want Melissa to be tested?”
“Ma’am, it’s best if both get tested,” the doctor said. “We can’t be sure either will match, but testing everyone—especially his children—raises our chances of saving the patient.”
Melissa reached for Jasmine’s hand. “Mom, I want to save Dad.”
But we can’t save him! were the words Jasmine wanted to scream, but died in her throat.
Mike was quiet, eyes darting between Melissa and Jasmine. Then they fell on Lola. He knew this could get messy if it wasn’t resolved quickly.
At the end of the hallway, Atlas and Baby watched the scene unfold. They’d stopped themselves from stepping in a few times; watching from a distance gave Atlas a clearer view than anyone in the thick of it.
“Sir,” Baby said softly, “we should leave.”
Atlas didn’t move. His eyes narrowed as he watched Lola’s family.
“Baby,” he murmured, “have someone else look into this case. Something about it feels off, but I can’t tell what.”
Baby glanced at his boss, puzzled. All he saw was a prideful family blaming Lola for everything. However, an order was an order.
He lowered his head. “Yes, sir.”

While Lola and Melissa had their blood drawn, Jasmine and Mike waited in a room near the ICU. Mike paced nervously while Jasmine sat, chest heaving, her heart heavy.
“I told you not to call so soon,” he hissed. “Damn. If that man survives, we’re both dead. And what if the results show Melissa isn’t a match?”
Jasmine looked at him, calmer now. “Why are you so scared? Didn’t they say it’s not guaranteed she’ll match? If Melissa isn’t a match, that doesn’t raise suspicion.”
“It’s not a DNA test,” she snapped. “There’s no point worrying about that for now.”
“I know!” he went on in distress. “But what if Lola is a match? That blood would save him, Jas. We can’t let that man live.”
“Then make sure he doesn’t,” Jasmine said.
“What?”
Jasmine stared at him coolly. “Make sure he doesn’t, Mike.”
“Are you out of your fucking mind?” he scoffed. “You want me to go in there and finish the job? The suicide claim could work. But if he died, do you think Lola wouldn’t lose it? You saw her earlier—she wanted Lawrence to live! If that woman starts digging, she’ll find out the truth!”
Mike didn’t understand why Lola wanted Lawrence to live, but he knew an attempted murder was too risky.
“Not to mention, she already put guards outside his ward,” he added in a hiss, dropping onto a chair. “Even if I agreed, I’d be caught before you know it. I’m not going back to jail.”
Jasmine arched a brow. “That’s not what I meant,” she whispered. “A blood transfusion will save him. What if he doesn’t have someone who can give it to him?”
Mike stopped. His eyes widened. He held his breath as Jasmine whispered, “You’re going to kill her anyway. Do it now. Do it before it’s too late. If you do, then we’ll leave this place and become a family, Mike.”
“We just have to fix this one problem,” she added, clasping his arms with her trembling hand. “Okay?”
