Chapter 359: The only protection my wife needs is mine.
“It is, indeed, from me.”

Another wave of heavy silence fell over the hall, letting Celestine’s calm voice echo. Deep lines appeared on everyone’s faces, utterly confused about what was going on.

“What’s happening? I’m getting confused,” one of the guests muttered. “So, did Melissa and Jasmine invite Lola, then humiliate her and make her look bad?”

“I hope not,” another replied. “Otherwise, I’d be very disappointed.”

“Indeed.” A third nodded in agreement. “That changes everything.”

Once again, the spectators whispered among themselves, giving their thoughts and side comments after this revelation. Celestine had only spoken a few words, yet her reputation was strong enough that no one dared to question them.

“What?!” Derek gasped, snatching the invitation from the table. Even from the outside, he could tell it looked identical to the invitations sent to all their guests.

He unfolded the letter, only to freeze at the first two words printed inside. Melissa, studying his side profile, leaned closer, and her eyes widened the second she read the name written on it.

Mrs. Bennet.

Melissa felt as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over her. Her gaze stuck to the invitation. Of course, she knew this one. It was the only invitation she had double-checked to make sure everything was perfect—she had even sprayed it with perfume, wanting Mrs. Bennet to be impressed the moment she opened it.

How did this end up in Lola’s hands?

“Mrs. Bennet?” Derek blurted out, which made Jasmine and Lawrence freeze in shock.

“What?” Jasmine asked, her voice cracking. “Derek, what did you say?”

But Derek didn’t need to answer. Those near them, who heard him clearly, began to murmur.

“Mrs. Bennet? They handed Lola an invitation meant for Mrs. Bennet?”

“Did they make a mistake?”

“How could it be a mistake? Every invitation was customized for each guest,” another person said. “There’s no way they made duplicates.”

“Does that mean…?”

Before anyone could finish the thought, Derek’s voice thundered.

“Lola, I thought you’d already sunk low, but this is a new kind of low!” he barked, tossing the paper back on the table. “How could you forge an invitation letter just to sneak in here?! Don’t you have any self-respect left? Instead of wasting your time forging invitations and causing trouble, why don’t you stay where you belong and take care of your children?”

“My husband looks after my children very well.” Lola crossed her arms beneath her chest. “But Derek, how could you say that when this invitation smells exactly like Melissa?”

“What?”

“Oh, well.” She shrugged and turned to Celestine. “Fine. Let’s say I forged this invitation. What about your tea party invitation, Auntie?”

Derek quickly faced Celestine. “Auntie Celes, don’t believe her. Lola’s a professional liar—she twists every story just to make herself look good. She could’ve made that up too!”

“Oh?” Celestine arched a brow. “Is that so?”

“Yes!” Derek snapped, glaring at Lola.

“Well, that’s interesting since all the formal invitations I’ve sent to new members are customized and different for each.”

“Auntie, don’t believe her. You have no idea how far this woman could go to get what she wants!”

Celestine’s brows rose in surprise, half amused and half displeased that Derek spoke as if he knew better how to host a tea party. However, Derek didn’t dwell on it as he refocused his attention on Lola once again.

“Why do you keep humiliating yourself?! First, you show up here causing a scene, and now you’re claiming to be someone you’re not! Aren’t you ashamed?”

Jasmine and Lawrence exchanged nervous glances, silently agreeing with Derek. There was no way Lola was Mrs. Bennet. They had met the real Mrs. Bennet themselves.

“Lola, I’m begging you,” Jasmine said as she stood, though careful not to get too close. “Please stop this madness for Melissa’s sake, for mine, or for your father’s.”

Lawrence’s face darkened. He marched toward Lola. “There’s no point in begging her! Lola, let’s go—”

“Izu,” Lola murmured, and instantly, Lawrence’s arm was caught mid-air as another hand twisted it behind his back.

“Ah—!” Lawrence yelped, his face contorting in pain. He turned, only to see an unfamiliar man in a suit staring at him coldly. “Who—ahh! You’re hurting me—LOLA YOUNG!”

“I’m sorry, Dad.” Lola’s tone was indifferent. “But like I said, my husband takes care of me. So he deployed men to protect me when they sense danger.”

“What nonsense—!” Lawrence grimaced as Izu tightened his hold, nearly fracturing his wrist.

All around, jaws dropped as they watched the scene unfold.

“Has he been standing there the whole time?” one guest whispered. “I didn’t even notice him.”

Not just that guest, but almost everyone realized they hadn’t seen the man until now.

“Oh…” another person murmured, glancing around and noticing several more men in suits scattered through the venue. Since everyone was dressed formally, they hadn’t stood out until now.

“What are you doing?! Make him stop, Lola Young!” Jasmine shouted, her panic rising. She turned to her husband. “Enough of this—security!”

“Lola!” Melissa stepped forward, eyes wide with worry. “That’s Dad! How could you—”

“How dare you hire thugs and bring them here?!” Derek roared, oblivious to the chairman pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Chairman, are you alright?” Travis asked quietly, but the chairman raised a hand to silence him.

“Enough,” the chairman said with a heavy sigh. “Lola, child.”

Lola raised her brows at him and smiled faintly.

“Izu, let him go,” she ordered, giving Lawrence a brief, cold glance. “Apologies, Mr. Young. But had you not tried to assault me, Izu wouldn’t have stepped in.”

“Assault you?!” Jasmine scoffed. “Lola, all we’re asking is for you to leave and stop causing trouble!”

Melissa bit her lower lip, eyes reddening with frustration. “Lola, you know this day is important to me. You said you weren’t angry about my relationship with Derek. So why are you ruining everything for me?”

“I didn’t ruin everything for you.” Lola tilted her head slightly. “If anything, it’s my night that’s ruined because of all of you. Melissa, you begged me to come here and this is how you treat me.”

“Lola, are you really going to keep lying?!” Derek shouted. “Aren’t you afraid of retribution? How could you even believe you’re Mrs. Bennet? The real Mrs. Bennet is expected tonight—so leave before she finds out about this farce!”

“He’s right, Lola,” Melissa pleaded. “Let’s not offend Mrs. Bennet. If we do, not even I—or Mom, or Dad—can protect you!”

Lola’s lips parted, but before she could respond, a cold, deep voice spoke from behind her.

“The only protection my wife needs is mine.”
