Chapter 338: Your Punishments…
“It was… okay,” Lola smiled as she talked to Atlas on the phone. “Mhm. She did need something, but it’s not something I can’t do. Easy peasy.”

“Mhm.”

“I’m on the way to pick up the kids now! I’ll take them to meet Aileen, okay?” Her eyes brightened as she smiled. “I’ll see you later at home, alright?”

“Have fun.”

Clack.

Lola’s grin stretched so wide her eyes squinted as she giggled, pulling the phone away. Amid that, she noticed Baby watching her through the rearview mirror. When their eyes met, he quickly looked away, prompting Lola to glance at the front passenger seat where Izu sat.

“Ah!” She clapped as a thought crossed her mind. “About your punishment…”

Baby and Izu’s ears perked up slightly, though neither turned around. Still, she could feel their sudden attentiveness.

I knew it, Izu thought grimly. There’s no way she’s letting us off with just that makeover and her dressing up all fancy.

“Yes, Young Madam?” Izu looked back, his eyes sharp and ready. “I’m ready — all of us are.”

They had already recovered, mentally and physically prepared for whatever she might throw at them. After all, Lola was told not to disappoint the big boss.

Lola laughed. “Loosen up! All I’m saying is, your punishment is over.”

“…”

Both Izu and Baby just stared at her — Baby through the mirror — utterly blank. For a moment, they didn’t want to believe what they’d heard, but Lola’s bright smile told them she meant every word.

“Also, you did a really, really good job!” she added, thinking they deserved that pat on the back. “Those women were impressed.”

She paused, recalling her grand entrance earlier and nodding approvingly.

“First impressions last, and I think mine’s something they’ll never forget.” She winked at Izu and smirked. “Good job. Take a day off once we pick up the twins. Having Baby around is fine.”

Again, Izu was rendered speechless, just staring at her. He didn’t even know what to feel anymore. A part of him waited for her to suddenly say, ‘Kidding! Here’s your real punishment — do it or die!’ But no, Lola just leaned back in her seat, humming as she scrolled through her phone.

An hour later, at the mall’s parking lot…

“By the way, about the punishment…” Izu began, catching everyone’s attention as his colleagues paused near their vehicles. He noticed the faint glimmer of relief — and anxiety — in their eyes.

He knew what they were thinking. They were hoping the punishment wasn’t that simple. They were used to severe punishments, and oddly enough, preferred it that way. These things were what kept order in the family.

Izu exhaled deeply. “The Young Madam said our punishment is done. We’re clear.”

For several seconds, everyone blinked as if processing his words. A minute later, dismay spread across their faces.

“That’s it?!” one of them burst out, yanking off his sunglasses to reveal his swollen eyes from crying. “Why?! What’s wrong with her? This isn’t punishment for all of you, but it is for me! Do you know how much I cared for my beard, and she made me shave it off?!”

The others murmured among themselves, emotions mixed between relief and irritation.

“You look more human now, though,” someone quipped.

“Shut up!”

“Come on,” Izu groaned, ruffling his hair in frustration. “Stop yapping. We were punished, now we’re clear. It’s better than running for a whole month and slowly dying.”

“Or being told to climb the highest mountain and freeze to death,” another added.

“And you’re not the only one who suffered!” Izu pointed at another man. “Look at Duke! He rarely showers because he’s afraid of showers, but he overcame that.”

Surprisingly, the man named Duke nodded solemnly. “That was punishment for me too. And it was… a cold shower. Cold.”

“This is ridiculous!” Izu threw his hands in the air. “We made a mistake, we got punished, and now it’s over. Be grateful we’re still alive! I don’t think there’ll be a next time.”

Baby, who had been watching from the sidelines, finally spoke up.

“Just a few days ago, you lot were struggling to survive each day,” Baby said, his voice calm but heavy. “Now that you’ve survived — thanks to Miss Lola — and have been cleared of your offenses, you still complain?”

He stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. “If any of you are unhappy with this, step forward now. I’ll send you flying.”

Their faces soured instantly. None dared move. Not because they were weak, but because they knew — in a contest of raw strength — no one could match Baby.

Baby waited. When no one spoke, he nodded in satisfaction.

“Remember this,” he rumbled, scanning each face. “Some of you might’ve survived the big boss’s punishment by the end of the month, but most of you wouldn’t have lived if it weren’t for her.”

He straightened up. “Consider this your second life. A life you now owe her.”

Silence followed his remark, but it carried more weight than words ever could.

“If that’s clear, I’ll go to her now.”

And with that, the massive man turned and walked away toward the mall to join the guards shadowing Lola and the twins.

Once he was gone, Izu faced the others and sighed.

“As much as I hate to admit it, the big guy’s right,” he muttered. “You all know the boss. We may be in the clear now, but we’re not safe. If anything, we’re probably on his list of cannon fodder.”

He hesitated for a beat. Atlas trusted the Phantom Circle more than anyone from the Order. Even if their missions carried equal importance, the difference was trust and this incident had damaged theirs.

“Besides,” Izu added, his tone grim, “Scarlet’s position is shaky right now. Not that she matters. That damn woman deserves to have her feet smashed.”

The Secret Society might’ve sounded like a small community, but it was far from it. It was a vast world hidden and operating in plain sight. Each family had its own rules. The Zorkens, for example, followed theirs to the letter. Despite that, the family was divided into numerous factions.

It just so happened that their faction despised Scarlet. To them, she was the reason they’d been dragged into this mess. After all, they believed Scarlet’s position right now should’ve belonged to someone else — someone who had conveniently died on a mission with her. They only listened to her because she was still their superior. How they all regretted that.

“She told me to take a day off,” Izu said, jerking his chin. “Use it to think about your place in the Order. Those who want to stay, stay. She’s with the young master and young miss, so having more eyes around is safer.”

None of them moved. They just stood there in silence until Duke spoke up.

“We’re all staying,” he said with a shrug. “We’ve been resting. Might as well keep making her look good.”

Izu raised his brows, then laughed. “Hah! Suit yourselves, then.”

And that was how Lola ended up utterly mortified by her grand entourage. Minutes later, she winced, mentally screaming:

Are they punishing me now that theirs is over?
