Chapter 337: A Living Curse
Celestine closed the door behind her and stopped dead in her tracks. Confusion was written all over her face as Lola’s voice echoed in her head.
“Call me Lola.”
Celestine’s brows slowly shot up before her lips curved into a smile. A light chuckle escaped her as she touched her head.
“Oh, my goodness,” she whispered, shaking her head. “And here I thought there were no more surprises left from her.”
The smile lines on her face slowly faded as she recalled the smirk plastered on Lola’s face—the one she’d given Celestine before leaving. It wasn’t just a polite parting smile; it was a look full of meaning.
“So that’s why she sided with Melissa,” she hummed, satisfaction lacing her tone as she resumed walking. Another wave of laughter escaped her, genuine this time, at the show she hadn’t realized she was part of.
Now, everything seemed to make sense to Celestine. Every single thing became clear without further explanation. After all, even when she once said Melissa worked hard to build a bridge with the Bennets, a part of her had always believed it was mostly luck.
Even Celestine would have to pull strings and exhaust her resources to enter the Bennets’ circle. And yet, Melissa had done so with nothing to her name. Now it made sense. It was neither luck nor effort.
Just like how Lola used that minor incident during the tea party to sow discord between Melissa and Anne, nothing had been a coincidence. Everything was deliberate. And realizing that made Celestine equally amused and wary.
She sat in the living area of her mansion, leaning comfortably as she pondered the Youngs’ situation.
“Lola Young…” she murmured, tapping her fingers on the armrest. “The true heiress of the Alberts. Surely, unlike Melissa—who was raised by a mistress and an insecure man—Loren’s teachings must’ve stuck with her.”
Satisfied and impressed, the corner of her mouth lifted into a smirk. A glint flickered in her eyes as she finally understood Lola’s intention behind revealing that sneaky little secret.
“She’s making me choose whose side I’ll be on, huh?” Celestine chuckled softly. “Oh, I don’t like Lola Young at all.”
After all, it had been a long time since anyone had challenged her like this. It had been a while since someone gave her an option with no middle ground. But at the same time, this challenge was amusing in its own way.
“Madam,” a maid suddenly approached, holding out a wireless telephone. “It’s the young master of the main branch.”
“Oh?” Celestine’s eyes lit up with interest. She took the phone, waved the maid off, and pressed it to her ear. “Derek, my dear, how have you been?”
“Auntie!” Derek’s cheerful voice rang through the receiver. “I heard Melissa took Mrs. Bennet to your tea party. I just called to ask how it went!”
Her smile widened. “It was… interesting.”
Now she understood why Lola had used that exact word. Because indeed, Lola had just made things even more interesting.
“I’m excited, actually,” Celestine added with a hum. “It’s been a while since I’ve been this satisfied.”
“Hehe. Good, good!” Derek laughed. “Melissa worked hard to invite Mrs. Bennet to that tea party.”
“Oh? I’m sure she did.”
“Of course! Melissa has always looked up to you, Auntie! She was so happy when you invited her. Now she’s proving her worth.”
Celestine tilted her head, listening to her nephew’s praises—so sweet even the angels would be ashamed of their voices. Propping her elbow on the armrest, she twirled a strand of hair around her finger.
“Derek, your engagement is in a few days. I know you like Melissa very much, but as your aunt, I have to ask because no one else will,” she cooed, her tone soft but deliberate. “My dear, are you sure about Melissa Young?”
“Auntie, what kind of question is that?”
“I know,” she said mildly, “but I need to ask it, anyway.”
Derek sighed, spinning once in his swivel chair before answering.
“Auntie, I’ll be honest with you. You’re not just like a big sister to me, you’re like a mother.” He smiled faintly. “Melissa isn’t perfect. She has her flaws. Sometimes I get upset or disappointed, but I know she always thinks of me and means well. Even now, she’s making efforts to help me.”
He smacked his lips and shrugged. “So no, I’ve never questioned if I wanted to marry her. I want to be with her, and I want to take care of her too.”
“Is that so?” Celestine mused, gauging his tone.
“Yes!” he replied without hesitation. “Don’t worry about me. I’m sure of Melissa.”
“Mhm.” She nodded slowly. “How about Lola, then?”
The smile immediately faded from his face. “What about her?”
“Nothing,” Celestine said gently. “I was just thinking you were originally engaged to her, and now you’re marrying her sister instead. Even if people pretend to forget, that story will always linger.”
“My engagement with Lola was arranged by Grandpa and her grandfather. This one’s mine and Melissa’s,” Derek replied curtly. “Besides, people understand why I fell for her and not that witch. She cheated first and got knocked up by some hoodlum.”
“Hoodlum?”
“Auntie, you already know the story.”
“Oh, I do,” Celestine said lightly, “but I wonder where that part came from. As far as I remember, Lola never said who got her pregnant or who her husband was.”
“The Young family told me,” he huffed. “And come on — if she was with someone she was proud of, she would’ve bragged about it, like she always did.”
“Or maybe she’s simply protecting her privacy.”
“Auntie, what’s wrong with you?” Derek frowned. “Why are you suddenly bringing up that zombie? You even sound like you’re defending her.”
Celestine smiled faintly. “Oh, Derek,” she chuckled softly. “I’m only asking because you’re my beloved treasure. I promised your mother I’d look after you. Like you said, I see you as my own child as well.”
Derek exhaled slowly but said nothing more.
“Well then,” Celestine lifted her brows. “If that’s what you believe, I’ll support you all the way.”
“Hehe. Thanks, Auntie.”
“You’re most welcome, Derek.”
The two exchanged a few more words before ending the call. Celestine gazed at the wireless phone in her hand, another sigh slipping past her lips.
“How do I help this silly boy before he burns along with the Youngs?” she murmured. “He threw away a diamond for a rock. Melissa’s going to be the living curse this family lets in.”
Her brow arched slightly. “And as much as I hate this family, I don’t want it to fall because of her.”
“Oh, well!” Celestine picked up the telephone again and dialed Anne’s home number.
