Chapter 329: Stole My Problem, Not My Man.
“Meg?”
Lola knitted her brows, looking at Aileen in confusion. “I think I just heard that,” she hummed, trying to remember where she had heard it. Then it struck her.
“Oh!” Lola’s mouth formed an O-shape.
Aileen chuckled. “I sent you a package. I did some research when I planned my show here. This place holds a special place in my heart, and I wanted to find you. Do you know how much I missed you?”
“I know, but I’m really glad that you’re fine,” Lola said, smiling at her. “Fashion designing, huh? I never thought you’d end up becoming so popular.”
Aileen opened her mouth but ended up smiling instead. Fashion design wasn’t really in her original plans. Yet as she thought about her future, a beautiful memory crossed her mind.
It was a memory of her and Lola as children. Lola often gave her dresses—not just used ones, but new ones. She would even beg Loren to buy two identical dresses for her and Aileen, though Lola’s reasoning was just to confuse everyone.
It was a simple memory, but it was what had nudged Aileen toward fashion design.
“I sent you a personal invitation to my show,” Aileen said with a smile. “You’ll come, right?”
“How could I miss that?” Lola quipped. “I’m not usually into these things, but I would never miss this for the world!”
“Great!” Aileen clasped her hands together. “I’d love to introduce you to some of my colleagues. They know you, after all.”
“Me?”
She nodded vigorously. “I’ve always talked about you. They thought you were just an imaginary friend because how could I call you my muse after all these years if I hadn’t seen you? How would I know what you look like, whether you gained or lost weight, or if you’re still as pretty as I remember?”
“I kept telling them the foundation is pretty, so there’s that,” she grinned until she was squinting. “And I was right.”
Lola chuckled at Aileen’s logic. It was a little silly, but also flattering. Even though fashion wasn’t her thing—considering her current style choices—she was touched that Aileen had never forgotten her.
Her eyes softened as she reached out and held Aileen’s hand. Aileen smiled back, nodding reassuringly.
“It’s really good to see you, Aileen,” Lola said sincerely. “Who would’ve thought a simple grocery run would lead to this reunion?”
“I know, right?” Aileen’s eyes reddened slightly. “Good thing I did my groceries after surviving on instant foods and deliveries.”
For some reason, they both glanced at their brown grocery bags. Seeing Aileen’s bags full of greens and Lola’s full of snacks, Lola’s face twitched.
“You’ve been surviving on just instant foods?” Lola asked. “Those greens tell me otherwise.”
“I had to change my diet before the show. I can’t afford to get sick,” Aileen chuckled. “But that’s a lot of snacks, Lola. You should add some greens to your list. If Mom heard this, she’d give you an earful.”
Lola laughed, thinking about her old nanny, who had been like a mother to her. When Loren was still active in business, it was Aileen’s mother who had always been there for her.
“They’re not mine,” Lola defended, noticing Aileen raise her brows. “These snacks…”
She trailed off for a moment, then smiled sincerely. “They’re for my kids.”
SLAM!
Aileen slammed the table, jaw dropping. “You’re married?”
“Not married—”
“A divorcee?”
“No —”
“How did you have kids then?!”
Lola opened and closed her mouth, thinking about the twins and Atlas’s claim. Atlas was still investigating the matter and had discreetly asked his sister for another DNA test. Even so, Lola wasn’t letting that affect the moment.
Right now, she just wanted to live in the moment. A piece of paper wouldn’t dictate her life or relationships anymore.
She smiled. “It’s a long story,” she said, cutting it short. “I’ll tell you once things are clearer. But yes—they’re for my kids.”
Aileen blinked, curiosity written all over her face, but she smiled and nodded.
“Okay,” she said, not pressing further. Even though she wanted all the details, she respected Lola’s decision. She wasn’t insensitive, especially since they had just reunited.
“No wonder,” Aileen added, her tone teasing slightly. “You look blooming—peaceful and happy! I was expecting Melissa and Jasmine to have broken you, but I’m relieved you’re fine.”
“Me too, Aileen,” Lola said subtly. “Me too.”
They shared a quiet moment, smiling at each other. Aileen smacked her lips and rested her arms on the table.
“Lola, how about Derek?” Aileen asked. “Is he the—”
“No—ew, never.” Lola cut her off in dismay. “Aileen, you know I like handsome men.”
“Derek is handsome.”
“He is?” Lola’s face twisted even more. “Since when?”
“Wait, you never thought he was?”
“Why would I?” Lola frowned. “He’s fine, but if I had to pick someone handsome from the Lancasters, I’d go for… Caullen. Maybe Travis too.”
Aileen’s smile stiffened briefly, but she shook her head and broadened it again.
“Even though Derek was my fiancé, he’s more like a brother to me,” Lola muttered, recalling their past. “But no, I’m not connected to him in any way anymore.”
“I see,” Aileen said, rocking her head. “Well, I guess that’s better. He used to tease you, anyway. I really didn’t like him.”
“He’s getting engaged, though.”
“Engaged? To whom?”
“Melissa.”
Aileen stopped and frowned deeply. “Seriously?”
“Yep. Seriously.” Lola shrugged, showing no jealousy or sadness. “They’re a good match. From what I’ve heard, the engagement party is this weekend.”
Aileen took a moment to process this. When it finally sank in, her frown deepened.
“That insecure bitch,” she hissed, eyes glinting. Lola, on the other hand, just laughed.
“Aileen, don’t hate her just because she stole my fiancé,” Lola said. “If anything, she stole my problem, not my man.”
“Goodness,” Aileen scoffed, looking at her pitifully. “After saving his life, this is what he does to you? You should’ve let him drown back then.”
Lola chuckled but didn’t dwell on it. Anyone who heard her story with Derek and Melissa would likely react the same. Deep down, she meant it when she said Melissa stole her problem. After all, marriage had never been her plan, even before she regained her memories from her previous life.
So, Melissa stealing her fiance, was helping Lola break off the engagement without looking bad.
