Chapter 322: Science Project
The next day, Lola decided to work from home. Thanks to Atlas’s ice bath the night before, her body didn’t ache as much as she expected. Even so, she was still sore, and it was best not to push herself further.
Staying in bed, Lola glanced at the children in the bedroom with her. A soft smile crept onto her face as the twins quietly worked on their school project at the small round table. She took their silence as focus and decided not to disturb them.
“So cute,” she whispered, her eyes softening with affection.
It was a good thing they didn’t have school today, since it was a holiday. That meant she could spend the entire day with them.
Lola lifted one leg slightly and nodded to herself.
“This is okay,” she murmured, then moved her laptop off her lap. She peeled off the blanket and swung her legs over the bed.
She winced when her legs ached from the movement, but it was tolerable. She slowly made her way to the twins.
“Kids?” she called softly. “Do you want snacks? Or help?”
The twins looked up at her slowly, their faces strangely flat. There was no usual sparkle of excitement. This was the first time she had seen them like this, just like their father’s stoic face.
“It’s okay, Mommy,” Chacha said meekly. “This is easy.”
Second nodded slightly. “Just rest.”
“What about snacks?” Lola asked again, but they both shook their heads.
Deep lines appeared on her forehead as the twins returned to their project. She darted her eyes between them, finally noticing their unusually quiet mood.
Are they upset? She wondered.
Atlas had left her last night after she took a quick cold shower, saying he’d put the children to bed. Lola was so exhausted that she fell asleep before he even closed the door. She had no idea if something had happened after that.
“Uhm…” Dragging a chair closer, Lola sat down beside them. She leaned in and observed the twins, but to no avail.
They weren’t talking. They weren’t giggling or being silly like usual. They were just… seriously working on something that didn’t look like a kindergarten project at all.
“Is this for your science project?” she asked. “I remember you had a science project — the one where we were supposed to make a greeting card?”
“No,” the twins answered in unison, not even looking at her.
Lola frowned, feeling oddly emotional at their coldness. “Babies, did Mommy do something that upset you?”
Finally, they stopped whatever they were doing and looked up at her, both frowning deeply.
“Mommy, are Second and Chacha your babies?” Chacha asked, her voice small but curious.
“Of course!” Lola answered instantly. “You’re my adorable babies, right?”
Second huffed. “Then why did you call Sir Atlas your baby?”
“…” Lola blinked once. Then again.
Her brain immediately registered what Second had called his father — Sir Atlas. Was that a lower rank than Father Sir? She didn’t dwell on it and decided to focus on the real issue instead.
“Are you… upset because I called your daddy my baby too?”
The twins nodded at the same time before Chacha spoke up again.
“Mommy says we’re your only babies,” she said, the corners of her eyes reddening. “But suddenly, you gave that title to him!”
“We want Mommy to be our only Mommy,” Second added, his tiny voice breaking as he tried not to cry, “and we want to be your only babies!”
Lola’s heart clenched. Seeing the twins tear up made her eyes sting too. Something about their words sent a ripple straight through her heart.
“Oh, babies!” She moved her chair without hesitation and wrapped them both in a hug. “Mommy is so sorry for hurting your feelings. I didn’t mean it like that.”
The twins bit their lips, their heads lowered as she hugged them tightly.
“Mommy was just being careless. Of course, my only babies are Chacha and Second,” she said, pulling back slightly to look into their eyes. She cupped their cheeks, her own eyes glistening. “And all I want is the two of you forever!”
The twins raised their brows, still sniffling. “Really?”
“Yes!”
“Then why would you call Daddy your baby?” Chacha asked with a pout.
Lola bit her tongue, her mind spinning for a kid-friendly explanation. That wasn’t exactly an easy one.
“Well, because Mommy… thinks you look like your daddy…?” she said, mentally wincing at her own lie. “I mean, I was a bit tired yesterday, so maybe Mommy was just a little out of it.”
She couldn’t exactly say she did it to seduce their father, right?
The twins stared at her for a few seconds before finally nodding in unison.
“Oh… that’s why,” they said, their mouths forming little o-shapes. Then they shook their heads and smiled brightly again. “I knew it! Mommy loves us and only wants us!”
“See, Chacha? We were worrying for nothing!” Second chuckled. “Our Mommy just wants us, not Daddy!”
Lola let out a deep sigh of relief, her heart melting as they returned to their usual selves. She couldn’t help but pinch their chubby cheeks gently.
“Chacha, Second, can you listen to Mommy?” she said softly, lowering her head a little. The twins immediately looked up at her eagerly. Lola smiled lovingly. “Mommy loves you so, so much.”
Surprise lit up their faces, their tiny hearts skipping with joy. Then, without hesitation, they hugged her tight.
“We love Mommy too!” they shouted together. “And we want to be together forever!”
“Me too,” Lola said, hugging them back and rubbing their little backs. “Mommy and Daddy will make it happen. Together… forever.”
Warmth filled the room. When they finally pulled away, Lola decided to stay with them and work on her laptop at the same table, just to keep them company. Every now and then, she peeked at their project with curiosity.
“By the way,” she asked casually, “if this isn’t your science project… what is it?”
Chacha beamed. “We’re improvising a nuclear bomb, Mommy.”
“Ah?”
“Chacha and Second were so upset earlier that we decided to make one,” Second explained with a proud, innocent smile. “Don’t worry! We’re not going to use it anymore.”
“…”
Lola opened her mouth, then closed it again. Inside, she was screaming — and crying. For some reason, a part of her truly believed they could make one… and succeed.
“Is—Is that so?” she stammered, forcing a shaky smile. “Well… tell me if you need help, okay? Mommy will help.”
“Okay~!” the twins chimed cheerfully.
Lola gulped, glancing at the table. Now that she thought about it… those weren’t even school supplies! Did she really have an eye problem?
Before she could inspect further, her phone vibrated on the side. Snapping out of her thoughts, she frowned when she saw the caller. It was Chairman Lancaster’s home number.
She glanced at the twins before excusing herself to answer. But as soon as she heard the voice on the other end, her expression changed completely.
