The Archangel of Death - Chapter 78
78: Mission 78: Mission This is yesterday’s chapter.
now regarding this case, I have two scenarios in mind.
one with a supernatural touch while the other is investigative.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
if you would like to offer your opinion, you would have to do it by tomorrow otherwise I will go with the ghost story.
That’s it.
Enjoy.
===== Chapter 78 The atmosphere in the room was awkward, to say the least.
Eric and Zefton, both were giving me stinky eyes like I am their enemy and have stolen their wives.
[You haven’t?] ‘It’s not my fault they came to sit next to me.’ The ‘they’ I am referring to are the infamous Asmara, my ex-fiancée, and the sky blue-haired beauty, the apostle candidate, Layla.
“What do you think this is about?” Layla asked curiously sitting next to me.
“Whatever it is, it isn’t bad news for us,” Asmara replied instead of me.
The question wasn’t solely meant for me anyway.
But like she said, whatever we are stopped for isn’t bad news for us.
If I have to guess and guess very strongly, this is about an event I mentioned in the first year.
A murder case.
It was a brief episode, covering only seven to eight chapters.
The team consists of the four people present in the room with me being an addition that wasn’t in the novel.
This case brought Asmara and Eric closer and this was also the case that fanned the flames of Zefton’s inferiority complex.
As for Layla, although Zefton had a die-hard crush on her, she only focused on the case, and amidst all the romance and jealousy, she was also the one who figured out this case and closed it.
In the first place, and it is purely my opinion, this little incident was exactly for the purpose I mentioned above.
Anything else was irrelevant.
It didn’t matter what the result was as long as the objective regarding the main cast was fulfilled.
This was also the part where Asmara mentions her engagement with Adrian but in the novel at this time, she was still his fiancée.
I don’t know what’s changed but I don’t really care anyway.
[Don’t you find it restless that you don’t hold all the cards to the future?] ‘That would be the most dumbest thing I would think of.’ The future was never mine to control.
I can’t control it in the first place.
If I wanted everything to go just as in the novel, I wouldn’t have stepped out of that bed and helped Rose’s father.
The future and all the cards regarding it were already gone the moment I decided to follow that quest and get out of that bed.
My card from the beginning was information.
Information of these people.
That is the real card I hold.
People make decisions in every event.
You know the people, you can control the event.
The events, never really mattered to me.
After a while, while I was under the stares of two handsome guys that creeped me out for an entirely different reason and in between two very chatty girls, Desmond finally entered the room followed by Michelle.
“Good afternoon.
You must all be wondering why you are here.” He began and once we were all attentive, he continued, “You may already know this but I will tell you anyway.
The academy has a system where it issues missions to a few selected students.
It is a special opportunity and you are welcome to refuse.” He said all he had and then stopped which meant it was time for us to ask questions.
“What are the incentives?” I asked after raising my hand.
“Additional grades.
And as for material rewards, you can ask for gold, weapons, artifacts, or whatever is suited as a good reward.” He replied.
I again raised my hand and after permission, I asked, “Will it be individual or in a team?” “Your performance and progress will be monitored and after and if you succeed in accomplishing your mission, you will be awarded individually based on your contribution to the case.” He answered my questions without complaint.
Actually, I already knew all of that but this was also a test.
Asking all the right questions was also a part of the evaluation hence why I am being so diligent.
[What is don’t understand is why in the first place?] ‘Because they are offering something I very much appreciate.’ Never pass free money and I am going to make a lot of it for doing almost nothing.
“Since there are no more questions, I will begin the briefing,” Desmond said and gave each of us a file with information on it.
“The case is a murder case.
A woman was found dead in her house.
Husband is the only suspect.” He said.
“Then what is the issue?
It is a pretty simple case.” I asked.
“Well,” Michelle spoke from the side, “There is no evidence.
Although the husband is the only suspect, there is no evidence.” “And without evidence, you cannot pursue a trial?” I asked.
“Yes.” Desmond replied and continued, “Which is why your task is to either find the evidence against this man or make him confess.” Once he had relayed his instructions, I asked, “What if the culprit is someone else?” This was actually a valid question that wasn’t asked in the novel.
Tunnel vision.
Although the husband was the only suspect, no other investigation beyond that was made, and given that Desmond hasn’t given any other instructions, the students in the novel found the evidence regarding the husband and made him confess.
But even when I read this novel, I found a few things very odd.
I want to run them across here.
“Then your mission instructions would also slightly change but in the end, what you have to do is solve this murder.” He replied to which I nodded.
It made sense.
After all, the mission was to make the husband confess and find the evidence.
But the end goal was the same, solve the murder.
“Are there any questions?” He asked.
“Yes.” I once again raised my hand, “What level of authority would we have?” This was my main concern.
In the novel, Eric and the rest were greatly thwarted by the city militia.
I didn’t want that so I was going to address this issue and if possible, make Desmond hand over all the authority to me.
Desmond exchanged glances with Michelle and replied, “You don’t have to worry about the militia.
I will personally write a letter ordering them to hand over all the information to you.” I nodded and gave it a rest.
Now I was the sole player on this field so I had all the authority.
[You mean all of you?] ‘Nope.
Me.
Just me.’ They can help if they want but I won’t ask for any help.
If they go my way, then they go my way.
If they don’t, I have no problem working alone.
Actually, I am better at working alone than with these amateurs.
===== “So, how will we decide who is in charge?” Layla addressed the elephant in the room.
Since she was the one to ask, she didn’t want to be in charge but seeing how observant she was, she must have sensed Eric and Zefton’s behavior since the beginning and as she said, ‘she knows the matters between a man and a woman.’ She is fully aware of Zefton’s feelings for her which was why she was also aware that I was now on Zefton’s radar.
“I vote for myself.” I quickly said.
Eric and Zefton also raised their hands.
That was one vote for each so it came down to the two girls.
They exchanged glances.
Layla coughed awkwardly and said, “Well, I vote for Adrian.” Zefton visibly hardened at Layla’s support for me and everyone, who didn’t even notice his behavior before, noticed this one.
Eric turned to look at Asmara.
If she voted for him, then I and Eric would have to sort this out somehow.
Surprisingly, “I vote for Adrian too then.” Asmara also voted for me which froze Kevin as well.
Wow.
These guys are so simple.
“I refuse with this decision.” Zefton coldly said, his voice heavy with displeasure.
“Then I am sure you have no problem working alone,” I replied.
Layla and Asmara turned to look at me, questioning my words.
I was clearly provoking Zefton which was totally unnecessary.
I could have simply said that this was the decision made unanimously and he should have objected before the vote was cast.
Yet my words were provocative and considering Zefton’s nature, he wasn’t one to get past them so easily.
“What did you say?” He asked.
Well, ‘asked’ was a nicer term.
His tone was more inclined towards more like a growl, accompanied by a low-tone delivery of words.
His intense glare gave his opponent a sense of aggression.
Too bad it didn’t work on me.
“Oh you, poor soul.
I didn’t know you were deaf.
Is it recent or were you born like that?” I asked, sympathy flowing with my every word like I was actually asking him that with concern.
The entire room froze.
Layla, Asmara, and Eric didn’t know what to say while Zefton, well, his tense posture, gritted teeth, flushed cheeks, and clenched fists clearly depicted that he was angry.
Very, very angry.
Mana coagulated around him.
Thin waves of mana bearing purple color formed around his vicinity.
I wasn’t one to back out of a fight so I too responded in kind.
[Magic Canon] [Sacred blessing] Thirty glowing balls appeared around me, ready to strike at even the smallest movement from Zefton.
I wasn’t just scaring him.
I was truly prepared to blast him away.
Just because this little sh*t is one of the main cast doesn’t mean he has to have both his eyes, arms, or legs to fulfill that role.
He could easily do it with one and if he has a problem then I would gladly lend a helping hand.
After all, it is a good deed to help out a crippled person.
“That’s enough.
Calm down.” Layla said, grabbing my arm.
Now in usual circumstances, this would have been a rational move.
In this case, however, where a jealous guy is involved, not so much.
As expected, the amount of mana around Zefton increased by double.
I also did the same and the number of canons increased to a hundred.
“I think that is enough.” Another voice filled with authority which we were all familiar with, was heard collectively and another, more powerful wave of mana swept us all along with it.
It didn’t do anything to me nor did it do anything to my ‘magic canons’ but the same couldn’t be said for the rest of the students.
They must have received internal blows considering they grabbed their stomachs.
The mana around Zefton was blown away by Desmond’s superior mana.
We all turned to look at Desmond who himself seemed surprised at me.
Of course, he was.
Not only was I unperturbed completely, but my magic canons were also fine.
They should have been blown away like Zefton’s mana but they didn’t.
However, being tactful, I dispelled the skill.
I didn’t want to create a scene.
As long as my meaning was across, I didn’t care how it was done.
“Student Zefton, if you had a problem, you should have addressed it before the vote.
If you don’t find it convincing, you are free to leave.” Desmond ignored the strange phenomenon regarding me and said to Zefton.
Zefton begrudgingly nodded and sat back down.
Now wait a minute.
How is what he said different from what I said?
[You really want an answer to that?] Yeah.
I feel like I have been wronged.
Why did he get angry at me but meekly obeyed him?
[You’re annoying] I still feel wronged.
“And student Adrian, refrain from provoking your teammates.
It would be better for all of you if you all work together.” He next said.
I also nodded and this matter was closed.
I was elected the captain and Zefton and Eric had no choice but to accept.
“Our first agenda is to question the militia.
Does anyone have anyone familiar affiliated with the city militia?” I asked.
The reason I asked that was because Desmond was right.
When working in a team, a hostile team member can spoil all your hard work.
If one of them had any connections in the militia, then asking the wrong questions would lead to stupid decisions made by my teammates.
Luckily, there was none as everyone shook their head so our first destination was the barracks of the city militia.
“We will meet tomorrow morning, sharp at 6:00,” I said and everyone nodded.
Everyone dispersed me included because I needed to get home fast.
I had a business partner waiting for me.
