The Archangel of Death - Chapter 74
74: The art of business (1) 74: The art of business (1) I couldn’t welcome some newcomers yesterday.
Welcome, otherworldly, Lazy_Kittu, Keiron_Pike, seiny, Thao_pham, and Kalgarth to my novel.
I hope you like it and continue to support me.
===== Chapter 74 “Are you out of your mind?!!!” Baldwin screamed as I relayed my simple plan to him.
I came straight to the mercenary guild because I wanted the news of my move to reach the ears of Cornelius before he even got home.
Of course, what I was asking Baldwin was very difficult and there was a very high chance he wouldn’t do what I asked him.
“Why not?
It’s not that big.” I nonchalantly replied.
However, my reply only seemed to have angered him more.
“You!!!
You lunatic!!!” He yelled and continued while yelling, “First you incited a war between the gangs which is still going on, and then, then you want to do this.
A war.
A war of everyone with everyone.
Don’t you know the consequences of this?!” I don’t know why he is overreacting so much.
It’s just a world war.
Huh… What has the world come to?
Inciting world wars used to be so much simple.
“Don’t worry.
It won’t come to that.
It won’t even come to a fight.
Well, a proper one anyway.” I quelled his worries or at least tried to.
I’m not an idiot.
Even though I am pissed by how the Vermilions tried to throw their weights around, I don’t want to do anything that would affect my profit.
Profit first, then everything later.
Even enmity.
So I won’t do anything drastic.
After all, this is just a warning.
A message about how dangerous dealing with me can be.
====== Hmm… My ears itch.
Is someone thinking about me?
I hope it’s a beauty who has fallen for my looks.
Ahh… whoever said good looks are a curse was right.
[…] [Quite narcissistic of you] ‘It’s called being confident.’ It took some time, but I succeeded in convincing Baldwin to go with my plan.
It wasn’t cheap of course and I had to give him a lot of slime cores since I didn’t have any money.
I couldn’t receive my payment from Talisa because of the Vermillion family so I will have to come for that some other day.
Anyway, by now, the message would have gotten across.
All I need to do now is wait.
Wait to let them simmer for a very long time and after they are done, I will make them bleed so much money that even the old man would cry for messing with me.
===== “Did you rest well?” I asked Laura while we having breakfast.
She passed out yesterday after training and didn’t wake up.
We were still in my training room and I bought breakfast from the shop for all of us.
“I did.” She replied while once again examining the changes within her.
Her height had increased slightly and that wasn’t the only change in her.
She could clearly feel the changes in her body and that was why even though she had been in tremendous pain yesterday, she didn’t say anything about the training today.
“And what about you two?” I asked Alicia and Rose.
Rose was a little tired because of training all night but other than that, there wasn’t any problem with her. As for Alicia, her changes were minor and of course, they weren’t in the physique department but in the mana department.
Alicia’s’ blessing was already a cheat, once we convert her mana to an attributed one, her advantage would only skyrocket.
“I’m a little tired but it’s nothing major.” Alicia replied after which Rose replied, “I’m also well, Your Highness.” I nodded since they didn’t seem so bad so I decided to continue with training normally today.
We didn’t have a test today as there were only three compulsory subjects so there was a one-day break between each exam.
===== “That’s troublesome,” I mumbled as I saw both Alicia and Laura sitting cross-legged and focusing on their breakthrough.
It was so sudden that none of us could do anything about it.
Maybe it is the effect of what I am doing to them but their breakthrough wasn’t a good sign right now.
Not in terms of power of course, no.
But in terms of exams.
If they miss their next two exams their ranking would be severely affected.
If I had known this would happen, I would have also purchased the herb from Talisa that Eric used in the novel to speed up his breakthrough.
But, there was no use crying over spilled milk.
Even if Laura doesn’t come up top in compulsory tests, her performance already would be enough to not have her kicked out of the elite class regardless of the section.
Whether she jumps up the section or not depends on the performance of the other students.
“Is that so?” Michelle said after I told her of the girl’s predicament and their unexpected breakthrough.
“That makes it complicated.” She mumbled while tapping her quill on the desk.
“Let me discuss it with the headmaster and then I will tell you what’s decided,” Michelle said after some pondering.
I nodded and simply turned to leave.
I didn’t know what the outcome would be but even if the girls are kicked out of the academy, they don’t need the qualifications provided by it in the first place.
As for strength, they would soon enough be standing on top of the world so there was nothing to be worried about in that regard.
If I am worried about something, it is making money.
My plans to start a business using the central government’s backing went down the drain after last night.
And my move last night was a gamble.
It might work or it might not work at all.
The central government is likely to give in to my demands but I have no idea whether they would be accommodating with the additional ones.
“You,” As soon as I stepped out of the room, a cold voice entered my ears.
I recognized whose it was.
“Grandfather would like to speak with you.” She said, getting straight to the point.
She was angry but she was doing a good job masking that anger behind her cold visage.
“Then tell him I can fit in sometime after a week.
I am busy before that.” I said without stopping.
“You!” She yelled slightly, “You think you being stubborn like that would help anybody?
We won’t be the only ones to take losses.” She gave a plausible reason despite her slight anger.
However, “I wasn’t the one who tried to trick and force you.” They were the ones being stubborn.
I simply retaliated.
My move just happened to deliver a lot more damage than theirs.
“And we are willing to properly apologize for that,” Sophien replied but I didn’t stop.
I simply replied, “Then tell your father he knows what to do.
I will consider it then.” ===== [Will it be okay?] [Won’t you end up creating an unnecessary enemy?] ‘Haven’t I told you this before?
I don’t like being used.’ First, the old man asked me not to sell anyone else potions but in return all he offered me was nothing, nothing but an empty title.
His first attempt to trick me.
And then he tried to force me and when that didn’t work, they tried to suppress me.
I may be weak right now but I am a man who stood at the apex, a being beyond their imagination.
Although I don’t bother with things like honor, it still doesn’t suit such pathetic existences to mess with me.
As for the danger that comes from them, it is nothing but a joke.
I’ve faced forces far stronger than them.
In front of them, the powerhouses of this world are four-year-old children.
There was nothing to be worried about from the beginning.
As far as money is concerned, I can make it in many other ways.
Although my profit would be greatly affected by the empire, there would still be enough to not worry about the money.
‘What about the things that I asked for?’ [Those things can be generated once you make them yourself] [I’m not omnipotent you know] ‘I know.’ ‘And what about the other thing?’ [That might actually be possible] [I don’t know for sure] [It could be just a coincidence] ‘Perhaps.’ There is only one way to be sure.
Let’s try it out since the girls are busy and I don’t have much to do.
I will have to wait until Friday though.
===== “Is that so?” Cornelius said after listening to the message sent to him by Adrian through Sophien.
“I don’t understand, grandfather,” Sophien said.
As far as she knew, her father didn’t have anything to do with the deal so Adrian should have mentioned her grandfather, not Michael.
“He wants Michael to break his wrist in front of him like Michael broke his.” Gallagher standing from the side spoke.
He didn’t use honorifics necessary for the heirs of the house.
“What?!
How could he?” Sophien found that demand unreasonable.
It’s not like Michael was being too forceful and Adrian’s wrist wasn’t broken, just dislocated.
Hadn’t he already taken revenge for that by causing the Vermillion house tremendous losses after his move?
“In my opinion, Michael was being a bit too forceful.” Gallagher unexpectedly sided with Adrian.
“The plan was just to stop him.
There was no need to get physical.” “How can you say that, uncle?” Sophien however wasn’t happy at all.
How could she be, it was her father being discussed.
Breaking his wrist wasn’t a big thing.
It was a matter of pride if they chose to give in to Adrian’s demands.
Even an idiot could tell that that was Adrian’s goal from the get-go but they couldn’t do anything about it.
Either they give in or they suffer losses until they hold onto their pride.
“It is not like we haven’t forsaken pride before, Cornelius,” Gallagher said, his eyes filled with wisdom and he reminded Cornelius of the times when they were just beggars on the street, selling charcoal to survive.
“My children aren’t me.
They weren’t born in filth and ate food worse than sh*t like me.
The most abuse they had to bear was by their instructors.” Cornelius didn’t raise his children like he was raised.
Although he wasn’t the type to spoil his children, he still didn’t raise them like he was raised.
The only members of the Vermillion family who knew of the hardships of the world were Cornelius himself and his sole friend Gallagher who had been by his side since they were children.
“Still, would you let them destroy everything because of this?” Gallagher knew what kind of man Cornelius was.
The decision presided on Cornelius’s shoulders.
He would soon have to decide otherwise everything he had built would take a massive hit.
Although he could bear that hit, the same couldn’t be said for his children who were born in silver manors with clothes made of gold in cradles made of diamonds.
“The recipe?
What do we know about it?” There was still a way to salvage this situation.
Cornelius only wanted to know the extent of the damage.
“The recipe was wrong.
It wasn’t the one he gave me.” Sophien replied.
“That could mean two things…” Cornelius mumbled as he organized his thoughts.
Either it was an entirely different potion, or the recipe Adrian leaked was a fake and just an attempt to remind them that he could make the original public as well.
“What about the ingredients?” Even that mattered.
The ingredients would have to come through Adrian in their case.
Was it the same for this one as well?
“Most of them don’t exist,” Sophien replied.
This cleared a lot of things for Cornelius.
One, he was simply bluffing right now and second, even if he wasn’t, there was still a chance that if they and Adrian could reconcile, he would stop selling those ingredients.
After all, Adrian was the sole supplier of those ingredients so he made sure to make insurance to avoid losses.
“That child is indeed a genius,” Cornelius muttered which was enough for everyone to hear clearly.
For others, they simply thought that the information regarding Adrian was falsified, but the same couldn’t be said for Sophien as she had personal experience with Adrian.
‘Not in a million years.
It is entirely something else.’ Sophien thought inwardly but chose not to say her mind.
