The Archangel of Death - Chapter 67
67: Preparing for the breakthrough 67: Preparing for the breakthrough The last few days have been a bit hectic so I couldn’t even properly welcome some newcomers.
Welcome GUILHERME_LIMA, MD_MOTASSIN_BILLA, Rico2x, and Vincent_Nguyen to my novel.
I hope you enjoy it enough to continue supporting me.
That’s it.
Enjoy!
===== Chapter 67 “However, in return, you will give us the formula for two more potions.” Cornelius relayed his demand.
He was wise enough not to ask for a mana concentration potion because he knew it was a long shot.
“You can decide the efficiency of the potions.” He also added which relayed the gesture of trust.
[Bah!] Yeah, Bah!
Trust, my a*s.
All he’s doing is trying to play me.
If he thinks I am going to fall for his fake sincerity and not notice the underlying meaning behind his offer, then he’s an even bigger idiot than he thinks I am.
The ownership of a city as big as that is heavily dependent on its officials.
Those officials belong to the central government.
Even if I am given the seat of the overlord of Castro City, its officials would remain the same.
So I will be an overlord only in name.
I would be given reports of course, just that those reports would be fake and those officials are deeply rooted enough to make them look real by erasing any and every kind of evidence.
And if I try to remove them, the city would fall into chaos because of how deeply they are connected to the city.
I would only be creating a mess for myself if I removed those officials.
His offer may lack no loopholes but it is full of the holes that are already there.
Creating a situation to take advantage of it is ethically wrong, taking advantage of an already created situation is being opportunist.
So even though there are no loopholes, I can’t do anything about those that are already there.
Nothing can stop him from taking advantage of them.
“Lord President is very wise.
But, do you really think so little of me?” Of course, I won’t point all of that out.
Instead, I would paint myself as a generous person.
“Do you really think that I would be so petty to take an entire city just for this?” I asked with a really hurtful expression as if my trust had been breached.
As if my morals have been questioned.
I was really distraught and deeply hurt.
[They don’t look like they buy that though] ‘Yeah, they really don’t.’ Sophien and Rachel were looking at me like looking at a con artist after he had been busted.
Even Laura was a little awkward, not knowing how to point it out.
Seriously.
Is that what they think of me?
Now I am really hurt.
Deeply.
[Stop being dramatic and continue with the negotiation] What is there to negotiate?
He just needs to show his sincerity.
“Well then Lord President, I will leave it to you to how to show your sincerity.
I’m sure you are wise enough as old as you are, to show proper sincerity.
Just enough that our relationship doesn’t go bad.” In other words, give me something scot-free.
Try to con me, well, I won’t take it lightly.
“I’m sure Lady Vermillion won’t find it troublesome to visit again with a renewed contract,” I stated while sliding the contract on the table.
Sophien looked like she wanted to bite my head off but she still contained herself.
She wasn’t in a position to throw her weight around especially when even her grandfather hadn’t said anything.
“Then I will discuss it with Grandfather.” She said while getting up and heading for the door.
===== “Mind telling me what that was all about?” Laura asked once we were alone.
I asked the servants to leave because I knew this conversation would be coming.
Instead of replying, I simply handed her the mana concentration potion.
She checked it and after assuring it, she was shocked down to the core.
“You… You bought this?” She asked with trembling words.
I smirked and replied in a hushed tone, “Even better.
I sold it.” Now she was frozen in place.
I nodded and leaned back to relax.
She can take her time to get over the shock.
Still, with how she was, I doubt she would overreact but her reaction would be contained.
She contained herself and asked calmly, her words still trembling though, “What do you mean?” “I made these potions.
I am the one who owns all of these.” I calmly replied.
The duration of her shock was shorter this time because during her shock, I leaned forward to take the potion which she hurriedly pulled like I was trying to take the treasure of her lifetime.
It was quite funny.
====== “And that is how it is.” I ended our hour-long discussion on this matter.
She wouldn’t get shocked by the end of it anymore.
Once we were done, she asked, “And why does she have anything to do with it?” She was a little jealous that Sophien knew about this but she didn’t.
“That is because she is representing the central government to deal with me.” I simply replied.
There was nothing between me and Sophien and she had nothing to worry about so I wasn’t worried about her reaction.
Even she knew that so her reaction wasn’t very severe.
But she wasn’t done as she asked, “They are not trying to use her to get close to you, right?” This was a world of aristocrats.
If a woman wasn’t strong enough, and in some cases even if she was, she was viewed strongly as a political tool.
It wasn’t a new tradition but a fairly old one so it would make sense why she would think that.
However, Sophien wasn’t just anybody.
She was an apostle in training who would become an apostle one day.
Her worth far exceeds that of a potion so even Cornelius, let alone Sophien’s father would do something to dissatisfy her.
“No.
They won’t risk it.” I simply replied and we moved on from this discussion.
She nodded and handed me back the potion.
I raised my eyebrow at her and asked, “Don’t you want it?” To which she replied, “I’m not the queen anymore.” Her reply suggested that the burden of her kingdom’s prosperity wasn’t on her anymore and she wanted nothing to do with it for a while.
She was tired from that position.
“Get some rest.
We have to apply for a leave for breakthrough tomorrow.” I instructed, stood up, and extended my hand for her to take.
“Mhm.” She replied while taking my hand to stand up.
===== “Are you out of your mind!?” Michelle yelled when we went to ask for leave before our classes began.
Of course, this close to the test, her reaction was expected.
“I’m sure we can pull through,” I replied.
“Do I have to remind you that the test is next week?” She asked, ignoring my answer. She wasn’t even listening to me.
“Stop, Michelle.” A voice came from the side, a familiar one, “You are free to take this time but I have to remind you, if you do not show up for the test next Saturday, you will automatically fail.
Understood?” Desmond explained the procedure.
To be honest, I was actually quite worried for Laura.
She wasn’t talented like others but was just a stepping stone in the novel.
There was no guarantee that she would be able to complete her breakthrough in time.
So there was one option that came to mind.
However, its ingredients were not available even in the shop. “Can I confer with you on this matter tomorrow?” I asked Desmond.
If I can’t prepare what I need, then unfortunately, the girls would have to push their breakthroughs forward until after the test.
“Very well,” Desmond replied and I left the office.
My destination was now the red light district.
I hadn’t been to the flame dragon auction since I sold the mana concentration potion but I didn’t think I would need to go there again so soon after I had decided to end all relations with them.
===== “Welcome.” Talisa welcomed me with a smile.
Since I was in a hurry, I didn’t bother with pleasantries.
“I need something.” Talisa’s smile remained on her face as she asked, “Whatever it is you need.” I told her my requirements.
An herb that Eric took in the novel.
That sped up his breakthrough from C rank to B rank.
Even those on lower levels could use it but since it could only be used once by one individual, many preferred to use it from C to B, rather than use it to advance from D to C.
Of course, it was very rare as well.
Whenever it was discovered, it was always put up for auction since its regular price could not be evaluated.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any of it.
But we will next week.” Her answer quite disappointed me.
I was really hoping the girls could level up but from the looks of it, their breakthrough will have to wait for a while, leaving them stuck on this level.
“Very well,” I replied.
Then I pulled a potion out of my inventory and passed it to her and instructed, “Sell this tomorrow.
But I will come for the payment on next Monday.” I gave her a simple strength potion.
It was to speed up the decision-making of Cornelius, the president of the central government.
It was just a warning shot, telling him that if he doesn’t decide soon, someone else might succeed in research of the strength potion.
Also because I was penniless right now.
Talisa nodded and took the potion.
Since I was done here, I left without saying anything else.
Just as I exited the auction hall, a man with a gruff beard blocked my way.
“Your Highness, I hope you are having a nice day.
Our boss would like to invite you to tea if that is alright with you.” Searching my memory, I found out who he was.
One of the men when I made a deal with Big Poppa, the boss of the Wild Turtles.
He was one of the lower-ranking ones.
Haa… I sighed on the spot.
I was busy as it was and now this.
And besides, then I needed to be in that place.
But now, why the hell would I go to such a disgusting place for someone else?
“Tell him I am busy.
But if it’s urgent, tell him to come to the Flame Dragon auction house next Monday.” I simply replied and tried to move past him.
He swiftly blocked my way and said, “But he really insists.” This bastard.
I am being nice here and he is trying to piss on my head.
I grabbed his hand and simply crushed it on the spot.
He might be a C+ rank but my strength itself was now in B- rank.
“Ahhhh……” A scream spread throughout the area and all attention turned to us.
I didn’t care about that in the least and crushed his hand further while holding his chin roughly and making sure he listened to my next words, “Tell that fat fu*k, if he tries this again, he will face the consequences.
If he wants something, then beg like a beggar and I might be willing to consider.” I let go of him and he fell on the floor.
After that, I simply left without worrying about the consequences.
I could guess what Big Poppa wanted but I had other priorities.
I didn’t have the time to pay attention to anything other than the girls and me.
And since nothing could be done about the girls, I had to begin the next step today otherwise I would be very late.
===== “Is that so?” Laura asked while Alicia listened.
With her talent, Alicia could break through to the next rank but even that was uncertain so I decided not to risk it.
As for Laura, if she tried to haste up things, she might end up doing a lot of damage to herself.
She was, after all, just a C-rank villain in the novel.
“Yes.
I don’t want you both to risk it so for the next week just train like how I have shown you.
Alicia, you can’t train since I won’t be available but I want you to mentally prepare yourself in the next week.
Understood?” I instructed all three girls and they simply nodded.
