The Archangel of Death - Chapter 56
56: The lesson in kindness 56: The lesson in kindness Chapter 56 Rose is not the first person I have trained.
In fragments where I lived many lives for many years each, I trained many to be at the apex of their time.
But none among them had the same talent even a little close to Rose.
When Rose hadn’t leveled up for almost two months since our training session at the Ravenknight Kingdom, I thought that maybe her talent wasn’t as much as I thought it was.
But now I realized what she lacked.
So it seems there is a need to change her training plan.
Sophien afflicted more slashes to Rose while Rose was doing her best to dodge them.
Although Rose was getting used to Sophien’s movements, talent alone doesn’t measure up to years of hard work and practice.
Besides, there was one simple mistake that Rose was making during the entire duel until now.
She was trying to stab.
A dagger is a weapon optimal for slashes.
Its short area and swift movement allow slashes better than a sword.
As for stabs, the best weapon for that is a rapier and a spear.
It’s not that stabs cannot be made using a dagger, but for that, you have to practice very hard or they have to be concealed.
Getting used to it recently like Rose wouldn’t cut it.
Another bout of slashes was delivered by Sophien and although it still looked like it was only one strike, multiple moves were delivered.
Sophien was taking full advantage of a dagger.
Her movements were short, precise, and fast.
So fast that it was hard for Rose to distinguish which move was a feint and which move was to dodge.
Although I am on Rose’s side and it would be better for me if she won, it would be difficult for Rose to win.
Rose didn’t have advantages like me such as a shield, healing, or regenerative abilities.
She was becoming sharp with each movement but she was also taking damage and losing blood that was making her slightly sluggish every time.
And what was inevitable came to pass.
Rose was struck again only this time, a stab.
Stab with a dagger is rare but also equally damaging. “That’s enough,” I spoke from the side.
Rose won’t learn anything more from this.
There was no other reason to continue.
Sophien stopped while Rose seemed like she wanted to protest, but she remained quiet.
Sophien hadn’t obtained even a little damage.
Her breath was a little quick, but she was fine overall.
This was the perfect example of skills beating power.
I moved forward and shouldered Rose while Michelle announced the winner.
“Send Rachel later with the time and place for our meeting,” I said while taking Rose out of the arena while also applying heal on her.
There was no need to honor our agreement since none of us had signed anything so it was just an empty promise.
Still, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t honor my agreement.
Sophien didn’t reply.
I took Rose out of the room and by the time we came out, Rose was well enough to walk on her own so I let go of her.
She didn’t appear to be but even an idiot could tell she was frustrated with her nibbling her lower lip with her teeth.
“Frustrating, isn’t it?” I asked.
Rose trembled but she didn’t answer.
She didn’t know what to answer.
But if I had it my way, this duel was perfect for Rose to understand that not everything can be solved with power.
So in my books, this was a gain in every way.
Rose got to familiarize herself with defeat while learning an important lesson.
“I won’t lose again.” She softly mumbled but it was enough for me to hear.
I smirked and put my arm on her shoulder again even though she was okay to walk on her own.
“Cheer up, Rose!” I loudly said before I added, “Your day still hasn’t ended yet.” ====== On the left, stood Laura.
In the middle, stood Rose.
And finally, we have a saint, on the right.
Every man’s dream.
[I noticed you’re quite a pervert sometimes] ‘At best it is called appreciating the beauty of creation.’ [You have studied law, haven’t you?] “Ladies, we are gathered here today to do a very simple thing.
To become strong.
A challenge, that everyone in this world faces but not everyone can tackle it.” “You must think they can’t because they don’t have the talent.
Well, wrong.
No!
They can’t because they can’t endure it.” “And believe me when I say this, once you can endure it, you will become the strongest existence in the world even if you have zero talent.” I decided to end my little inspirational speech there and said, “Now, I have prepared a strict regimen for all three of you which we are going to follow until the first test after almost three months.” The girls listened attentively and I began with Laura, “Laura, I’m sure you have already felt that you can resonate with the whip.
Now what I need you to do is control it at will.
Manipulate it to move without throwing it.” That was the special effect of the whip.
The dark mana could manipulate the movement of the whip.
What Laura needed to do was to control it.
She nodded and I pointed at a corner for her to take.
She left and I turned to Rose.
“Put these on and slash the air five hundred times vertically, then five hundred times horizontally.
Then do five hundred slashes of both of them each, only in reverse.” I instructed.
What I wanted her to put on were weights.
One, it would make the training very difficult, and two, with how strong she was, I doubted anything other than that would be much more effective.
She nodded and she too left for a corner.
And that left me with a nervous-looking black-haired girl who was here out of spite.
In other words, she was self-invited but since I have already decided to make her an ally, it would be good to train her as well.
And we begin with a simple exercise.
I smiled and pulled a dagger from my inventory and handed it to her.
She looked at it confusedly and then at me so I spoke with a beautiful smile.
“Stab me.” “Pardon?” She went wide-eyed at my words so I repeated myself so she could be sure, “Stab me.” This time, my instructions were clear she didn’t know how to act on it.
But, even though she thinks it is lunacy, I think there is a very clear purpose to it. Although Alicia is a support type blessed and her role as the saint also made her the best support, she would need to defend herself someday as well.
But how can she defend herself while having an aversion to hurting someone?
So the solution was simple.
Try to kill someone very hard to kill.
“Are you insane?!” Of course, convincing Alicia would be a challenging task altogether.
“Look, you and I, we both know you won’t be able to do what is needed to be done in the test and we both know the reason why.
So it’s either this, or you fail at this test.” I replied.
Failing wasn’t much of a problem.
It was setting up a mindset.
If Max’s problem was his honor and his aversion to underhanded tricks, then Alicia’s problem was her kind heart.
She needed to learn to be stern.
It will save her a lot of trouble in the future.
Sure enough, she had no reply to my remark so I grabbed her hand with my hands and before she knew it, drove the dagger in my stomach and retracted it as well.
Damn.
It hurts more than I thought.
[HP -45] [Bleeding effect is applied] [You will lose health by 1 HP every second] Which would still take me quite some time.
But before the wound got any worse, I applied ‘Heal’ and it healed on the spot.
This was also to show her that she didn’t have anything to be afraid of.
I won’t die that easily.
Of course, that doesn’t mean she can do it so easily even after knowing that.
So I provide her with proper encouragement.
“Look,” I spoke which garnered her attention even though she was very shocked to even react when my wound had healed.
“I know why it is difficult for you.
You save lives.
Not take them.” I said before I continued after a short pause, “But we don’t live in a world full of roses and tulips, there are thorns too and to bear those thorns, we need thicker skins.” “Now either you can decide to be a hand that is willing to be pierced by those thorns, or you can be a hand that although is pierced, still has the strength to hold that flower to appreciate its beauty.” The crux of my speech was simple.
If you want to appreciate the beauty of creation with a smile, you will have to face and suppress its ugliness with a cold gaze as well.
She nodded, although trembling a lot, so I held her strongly, not to comfort her, but to stab me again.
She again jumped and yelled which garnered the attention of both the other girls but I signaled them to stay calm.
I know it was cruel to Laura but she needs to go through with it.
This is the only way I know how to make a doctor a killer as well.
===== “Don’t you think that it’s a little too harsh on her?” Laura asked while I was checking her progress.
It had been two weeks since we started training.
Laura and Rose didn’t need much supervision so I mainly focused on Alicia.
If even Laura was asking me that, then it proved how harsh it was on Alicia.
But that wasn’t the excuse to stop.
Sooner or later, she would get past it.
I did.
I had to take a life first time when I was thirteen.
The one that I had to kill was a woman.
She was an orphanage manager but it was only a front.
Behind the scenes, she would provide small children of her clientele’s preference for s*xual favors.
Since her clientele consisted of high-profile people, there was no evidence against her.
It was another delivery night when one of my masters, after cleaning up her entire clientele, brought her to me and ordered me to kill her.
It was hard.
Very hard.
My hands trembled, my snot flowed and I couldn’t stop shaking.
The woman begged me to let her go.
That she would change her ways.
I was tempted.
The decision was entirely up to me.
Whether to let her go or kill her, was all up to me.
So in all my fear, a thought crept up in my mind that maybe I should spare her.
Maybe she will change her ways.
Yet, I wondered why, why she wasn’t breathing and why was my dagger deeply embedded into her heart.
I couldn’t sleep that night and several more to come.
I had nightmares every night where I would see myself killing her.
One could say that it was harsh on me then.
That I was just a child who didn’t deserve to go through all of this.
But there was a silver lining to all that as well.
I didn’t sleep that night.
But I know for sure that those children did.
They wouldn’t have if I hadn’t killed that woman.
I still remember everything clearly and it’s like living that moment all over again whenever I would remember it.
But I didn’t take it as torture anymore but as a reminder.
Every world has two sides.
I just need to smile at the beautiful side and be cruel to the ugly side.
“Don’t worry.
She will pull through.” I replied while staring at Alicia who was lost in a book but wasn’t reading it at all.
Her mind may be collapsing, but a new mindset can be set right on top of the crumbled one.
She just needed to know it was necessary and everything else would be just fine.
