The Archangel of Death - Chapter 240
240: Battle 240: Battle Chapter 240 “What are you doing!!!?” Eric yelled as those running for freedom were skewered like kebabs in a skewer.
Only there was more than one skewer for each piece of meat.
I admit that the scene was a little overwhelming for the kids who hadn’t seen more than a severed hand let alone see almost a thousand people being impaled by arrows, their death bringing in a lot of pain which in turn brought a lot of screaming.
“What makes magic, magic?” I asked out loud.
No one replied.
Everyone was too overwhelmed by everything.
“Weapons are simple.
You can tell what their user would do.
But magic is special in that regard, why?” I asked again when no one replied.
“It’s unpredictable,” Asmara replied.
She wasn’t a mage but she sure knew how to fight one.
Exactly.
Magic was a mystery, hence the name.
“Correct-o-mundo.” I replied before I added, “Magic is always unpredictable.
Hence never let your guard down when it comes to magic.” Eric wasn’t happy with my analogy but there was nothing he could do.
I was in charge and I was stronger.
He had a supporter by the name Sera but ever since she saw me back at the dungeon, she was very quiet.
If I knew that all I needed to do to get that little pixie to shut her mouth was to kill a big green lug to the point its body wouldn’t remain, I would have done it sooner.
“What if you’re wrong?” Eric asked, hatred seething in his voice.
“If not then…” I looked at him with a complicated expression and said, “Oops.” Too bad for him, the verdict was quickly given when the bodies of the dead men began to explode.
They weren’t large explosions but combined with the chain of explosions from the thousand and some people, the explosion could have greatly wounded our army had they made it to us.
“Turns out I wasn’t wrong,” I said once the explosions died down.
As for the rest of the four thousand army behind the ones who were exploded, they remained still.
At the forefront, the knight looked in my direction, no, he looked straight at me.
I smirked in return and mouthed, ‘You lose.’ He didn’t do anything but remained still in place.
Well, he could have been fuming in anger for all I care.
I couldn’t see his face through that armor so no satisfaction for the poor me.
“What do we do now?” Asmara asked once everything died down.
“We wait,” I replied.
I wanted to see whether the barrier would come back or not.
If it did, we failed this exam, but if it didn’t, well, then there was war.
[What if they’re recharging it?] Not possible.
A steady supply was needed to keep up the barrier.
In the original course of this point of history, that never happened.
That thought wouldn’t even cross their minds.
Because there was nothing to recharge the barrier with.
Everything was too easy.
Too easy?
Nah.
Someone with such a good plan wouldn’t be so lax.
If they could convince their own men that they weren’t running to their deaths, they could do anything.
I was pretty sure that those soldiers weren’t told they had blown up magic cast on them.
They would have been lied to.
Most likely some sort of curse magic that would spread through us on contact.
Pretty ruthless I have to say but that also meant it was a smart thing to do.
That showed that the other side was not stupid and if they weren’t, they wouldn’t do something like this either.
Entrust everything to a war of might.
It wasn’t.
This wasn’t a war of might, but something else.
There was something else.
The army wasn’t moving.
A diversion.
“Take Sera, Eric, Sasha, all the others with lovely names, and about 500 soldiers.
Canvas around the city.” I said glancing at Asmara.
“Looking for what?” Asmara asked.
“I’m sure you’re smart enough to know what you’re looking for,” I said.
“What about you?” Eric asked.
“I have a war to win,” I replied without looking at him and keeping my gaze fixed on the knight who was also looking at me.
“Are you sure?
He’s strong.” Asmara said.
Well, of course, he was.
But so was I.
Not to mention we also had thirty B ranks on our side.
Granted they had B ranks as well, but it was still a fight to our advantage given that our number was higher.
“Go,” I said.
Asmara nodded and left with the rest of the students.
The commander relayed my order and five hundred soldiers left with them as well.
When the knight on the other side saw the number of soldiers leave, he turned to his own and said something.
Similarly, from there, a good number of soldiers left as well.
But I wasn’t going to let him leave.
“MEN!!!” My yell resounded throughout the battlefield, even to the other side which was proved by how the knight turned to look at me in the middle of relaying his orders.
“FORWARD!!!” Just one word to start the war and it did.
The soldiers on my side began to run and I followed along with them on my horse.
Around me, a group of mages was also present, ready to cast shield magic so that the army on the other side could not dwindle our numbers with arrows.
Expectedly, the rain of arrows did come but none of our soldiers died.
Not one of them thanks to none other than our mages.
That was why I said that magic was unpredictable.
I also knew a bit of magic but that magic didn’t work on mana but on equivalent exchange.
In other words, a cost.
No cost was greater than life.
Too bad I couldn’t use the death of the thousand soldiers back there.
Otherwise, this war would have long come to an end.
I stood up on my horse while it was still mid-running.
The other side and we were close.
At most a minute, even less, and we will collide.
I jumped from my horse and after a flight of about twenty feet high, I fell in the middle of the ranks of the other side.
[Magic cannons] Hundreds of [Magic cannons] blasted those near me to oblivion.
[Eclipse] [Target in range: 431] [Price set is 1430 MP] [The targets have lost their sense of smell and sense of sight] [Sword of destruction has been equipped] As I swung the sword of darkness at the enemies all around me, I felt alive.
I didn’t obtain any stat boost from the sword but it was still a pretty sharp weapon that slicked through my enemies like a hot knife through butter.
Power accumulated at the tip of my sword, soul power, accumulated and compressed to deliver the maximum amount of damage.
I stopped, grabbed a soldier, and threw him in the air, away from the fight.
I was certain he would survive the fall but whether or not he would survive this war was up to him and him entirely.
That was all the mercy I could show.
By the time I was done with that, the power in my sword was ready.
I swung it in a circle after making sure my targets were those who deserved it or some other one was also in it.
Unfortunately, for them, there was none.
All of them were scum.
Boom!
A shockwave, stronger than any other cleaved through the bodies of the soldiers around me, killing around two hundred of them on the spot.
Safe to say, the number one contribution in this battle belonged to me.
The battlefield momentarily froze when they saw me wreaking havoc, my side and the other one as well.
It was nothing strange, the other side was having second thoughts while my side was flabbergasted by the sight of my skills.
However, freezing up in the middle of a battle wasn’t a wise thing to do.
My army or the other army didn’t agree but someone else did.
A knight covered in armor from head to toe.
He didn’t miss the chance of a frozen army and headed for the strongest ones in my army.
Well, the second strongest, the B ranks, because going for me would be stupid.
Great minds think alike.
I also turned to the other army that was coming out of their trance and activated [Fly], making a beeline for the B ranks in their army as well.
As I landed, without hesitation, I brought my sword on one of them who managed to block my sword but the shockwave from my sword was still strong enough to cause him damage.
But it gave the others some time to react to my speed and come to the rescue of their comrade.
[Magic cannon] Too bad I was waiting for them.
I caught some off guard with [Magic cannons], while some were able to guard themselves in time while some outright dodged my attack and came at me.
Well, a fight without retaliation would be boring, wouldn’t it be?
