171: Sophien (1) 171: Sophien (1) Chapter 171 Sophien sat in front of the mirror applying makeup to her face.

Her eyes were empty of any emotions and her face was devoid of anything as well.

If there was one thing in the room, that was coldness.

“My lady…” Rachel called her but she didn’t finish her sentence, she couldn’t.

She couldn’t protect her lady at all.

She knew the future that awaited her and so did everyone else but they couldn’t do anything about it.

The Kalkstein family was the maiden family of Sophien’s current stepmother, the current lady of the vice president of the Central government.

The future ahead was full of pain and everyone knew that but they were helpless.

Sophien’s own father was behind her doom so there was no one who could do anything.

And given the political circumstances, the nullification of this engagement would bring forth a civil war.

A civil war led by the two strongest factions of the central government.

Of course, at the moment, the central government was firm and there were no political problems but the analogy of two kings in one nation always brought misfortune was always true.

If the central government, Cornelius Vermilion, faced one misfortune, then that was a foolish son.

A son embroiled by his wife.

The stepmother of Sophien, Tamara, had used Sophien all her life.

Sophien’s status as the apostle candidate was used all her life.

She was the one who had bound Sophien to Lambert.

She was also the one who had insisted Sophien’s father to force Sophien to seduce Adrian.

Adrian’s power was irrefutable and she wanted to have both of the superpowers as an option but when the Kalkstein family raised that issue and in just one day, the firm central government showed the signs of crumbling, the Vermillion family had no choice but to honor their previous agreement.

Marry Sophien to Lambert Kalkstein.

No matter how powerful the Vermilion family was, even they knew that the world wasn’t ruled by only an iron fist.

Sometimes, a mixture of cunning was needed and that small blend was owned by the Kalkstein family a bit too much.

“Leave,” Sophien said with a cold tone.

Her voice wasn’t emotionless but it was still enough for Rachel to know that there was no use arguing.

“…Yes, my lady,” Rachel replied with her head down and left the room.

Sophien was left alone in the silent cold room which was brightened by the sunlight flowing in from the windows but the darkness inside the room was heavy on every other thing.

“He’s not here,” Sophien said to herself.

She had put her hopes into someone for the first time but that very person wasn’t here.

She knew it was her fault for believing in someone but she didn’t let that disappoint her.

She was a little let down but she hadn’t put her faith in him that much, so she was fine.

She was fine.

She chanted that sentence inside her again and again but unknowingly tears fell down her eyes.

She was a strong and independent girl.

Nothing like who she was before, she made a change in her life but it was all for naught.

The fact that she was the owner of her own life was an illusion.

Nothing had changed, she was still the same.

And when a ray of hope emerged, salvation to her who would remove that illusion, help her stand on her own feet but that hope wasn’t where it was supposed to be.

“It’s alright.

I don’t need him anyway.” Sophien once again said as she raised her head to look back in the mirror.

“Don’t need who?” A voice fell close to her ears that kicked her instincts fully and she hurriedly swung her dagger only for it to be caught between two bare fingers as the holder said, “Now, now.

Is that any way to welcome your guest slash business partner?” ====== I saw Sophien with thick tears and a broken expression but her eyes still convinced herself.

I had seen that look on people before.

People who were too afraid to ask for help.

Some thought it was beneath them while some thought they didn’t need it.

Sophien probably came in the latter category but deep down she knew, she knew she needed help.

But, in my case, she didn’t need to ask anything.

I was the type to follow my commitments.

Just look at how I decided to rush to her instead of going to the empire and receiving a massive reward while also pissing off half of the empire, probably more, and even worse, possibly pissing the emperor.

I wasn’t going to let her down and if for that, I would have had to use some drastic measures during the dungeon, I wouldn’t have hesitated to use them.

That’s something I learned from my father who always prioritized my mother above everything else, even himself and us.

My mom often said that he loved us more than he loved her but I beg to differ.

I had seen him kill someone because of her and my father wasn’t someone to kill for no reason.

He didn’t even ask for the reason and simply snapped the man’s neck, just because my mother said so.

I admired that action of his and following that example, if I ever ended up making a commitment, that commitment was more important than even myself.

Right now, I have made such a commitment with Sophien.

I smiled as I wiped her tears.

I didn’t say anything though.

Right now, she was going over all the faith thing regarding me, I was late and girls hated it when men were late.

Especially when it mattered so she was going over whether she should do it again or not, whether I would come next time or not.

What if I disappointed her once again?

I could clearly read her thoughts through her wavering eyes.

The only way to show my commitment was through my actions.

Without another word, I slid her dress off her shoulder silently.

If she needed to know of my resolve, then I was willing to show it to her hands-on.

====== Rachel couldn’t rest.

While her master was in despair, she was out there when she should be inside there with her.

But she couldn’t be.

She couldn’t go against the will of her master.

No matter how much she wanted to go in there and console Sophien, she knew that it would only have a negative impact on her full of pride mistress.

But, she couldn’t resist.

Despite all the concerns, despite knowing that it wasn’t good for her master, she still went to her room and when she arrived, her keen ears picked up a strange sound.

A sniffle.

Her mistress was crying.

She decided.

She couldn’t wait anymore regardless of the consequences.

So she stepped forward and knocked on the door.

She heard a panicked voice.

She was right, her mistress didn’t want her to see her like that.

But she didn’t let that hold her back.

She knocked again and said, “My lady, I’m coming in.” A panic-stricken voice came from the other side, “Don’t come in!” It cemented Rachel’s belief that her prideful mistress didn’t want her to witness her weakened state but that was why Rachel was there for her, to tell her that she would be there for her no matter what.

“My lady, I know it is hard but please let me in.” Rachel insisted but from the other side, a yelp was heard and a reply came as if the person replying was running a mile, “Don’t come in!

I can’t let anyone see me!” The reply was loud but there was a time between each word that only worried Rachel more.

“My poor lady,” was all she could say as she respected her wishes and walked away.

===== [Wow] ‘What?’ [I didn’t know men were capable of such self-control] I was soaking myself in Sophien’s bathtub as Allison came to bug me.

‘I’m not gonna have intercourse with a minor.’ I replied.

There was a considerable risk while doing that but there was nothing wrong with a little hands-on exercise.

Being a doctor, I knew the risks that could follow such an action and I wasn’t going to violate them for momentary pleasure.

As I stood up and dried myself, I equipped another Hartmann’s suit and stepped out of the bathroom while still drying my hair.

I saw Sophien standing on the other side of the bed, vigilant like I was about to jump her.

Like she didn’t enjoy it.

She had changed her clothes but it didn’t look like she cleaned herself up.

But I didn’t mind.

In fact, it was a bit kinky that way.

“Please tell me you’re not going to stand like that all day today, are you?” I asked as I stepped forward.

In turn, she stepped backward but behind her, unfortunately, was her wardrobe so she had nowhere to back away.

I chuckled and stepped forward again only to have her lean back into the wardrobe like she was trying to merge with the wood.

Fu*k.

This strangely made me excited.

Like a bunny and the big bad wolf.
