The Archangel of Death - Chapter 133
133: The prelimineries 133: The prelimineries Chapter 133 “Then how about we do this like this?” Sirius spoke as he seemed to have understood my intentions.
“Those who are against student Adrian and Student Rose participating without a limiter, please raise their hands.” I saw what Sirius was trying to do and it was an appropriate approach in this situation.
Playing politics and not only that, he was also limiting them as well.
Seven hands were instantly raised signifying the hands of the seven kingdoms and there were four more from some kingdoms that I didn’t know nor did I care about.
“Very well.
However, I do think that limiting student Adrian and student Rose would be ignoring their hard work which is not fair to them so how about we do this.” Sirius began to suggest and once everyone was attentive, he continued, “If student Adrian and student Rose are properly compensated by those who are against their participation without a limit, then I’m sure it would be fair.
Otherwise, we would have to go with it as it is.” Done with his suggestion he subtly nodded at me and I did the same in return.
The people who were against it conversed and the three who weren’t part of the seven kingdoms dropped their hands after the conversation.
As for the seven kingdoms, they were still adamant.
After all, this was their chance to make a name for themselves.
Become true powerhouses of the world so they were really, really desperate.
“Two A-rank artifacts and two A-rank skills.” One of the kings spoke.
He’s kidding, right?
He does know that he was offering those things to a crown candidate and a B+ rank talent.
I mean, the armor and weapons of Rose were B-ranked, she had no reason to accept this when her gear would soon be changed by me anyway.
As for me, these things didn’t work for me so I didn’t want them.
“I refuse.” I simply replied.
They were taken aback when one of the kings argued, “I believe it is a fair compensation for your troubles.” “It would be if I wanted them.
I don’t want them and neither does she.” I countered, ending the debate entirely.
I didn’t want to escalate this issue.
No one had a logical reason to deny us participation and if they wanted to limit us, they would have to do so properly otherwise, we could always refuse and with Sirius on my side, they wouldn’t be able to do anything.
“Though I will warn you,” But, perhaps a little motivation to steer their decision in the right direction was needed, “I will wipe everyone’s face on the floor so if you don’t want that, try harder or I will.
Very, very hard.” [Get it over with] [We don’t want any drama] ‘Although you’re correct, my business instinct says we should take any opportunity.’ [You do know that soul damage won’t remain in one place] [It will increase if left as it is] ‘You’re a buzzkill.’ [I’m worried about you] ‘Thanks.’ She was right, though.
I was constantly getting tired very fast and certain parts of my body would hurt occasionally.
No matter how high I increase my stats, that won’t help my body with soul damage.
I need to hurry and get this over with before the damage increases.
“Well, how about this?
Twenty million gold and we are willing to let this go.” I stated my suggestion while they were still discussing things.
When they heard my demand for money, they flinched really hard.
[They must remember your extortion] ‘They sure do and I made sure of that.’ They composed themselves and Ronald replied, “Very well.
You will have them by the end of the day but in return, you and that girl will both wear mana dampeners to C+ rank.” “Sure, why not?” I nonchalantly replied as Rose returned to my side and pinched my hand.
She was still angry about me and Sophien and I dreaded Alicia and Laura’s reaction once they found out.
[Shouldn’t have been a womanizer then] ‘I’ve said it before and I will say it again, life is too short.’ The tests continued and only four hundred and thirteen students passed the first test.
That was all for today and the rest of the preliminaries would begin tomorrow.
Of course, the apostles and the saint got preferential treatment and they advanced to quarter finals which left four hundred and five candidates including me and Rose to duke it out and get this over with.
“Should I display my full power?” Laura asked when we were traveling back to the Lux Villa in the carriage.
“There is no need to display all our cards in the preliminaries but you are stronger than anyone else in that group so devastate them.
dominate your group and stand on the top.
The training we have been doing so far will be enough to cover that.” I replied to Laura before I turned to Rose, “Rose, you will do the same.” She nodded but her cheeks were still a little puffy meaning she was still pissed at me.
“What is wrong with you?
You have been like that the whole day.” Laura commented when she noticed Rose’s bad mood.
Rose glanced at me to which I didn’t know how to react.
“Nothing.” In the end, she replied and turned her head outside.
===== “You look happy?
Had a nice dream?” Laura asked Rose who was smiling like an idiot since this entire morning.
“Something like that.” she simply replied and kept on smiling.
[I pity such a gullible girl] ‘What do you take me for?’ [Womanizer] ‘Fu*ck off.’ I had to coddle Rose the entire night last night so she wouldn’t be mad at me anymore.
Of course, she wasn’t still happy about me and Sophien, but she hadn’t told anyone yet so I was sure there would be no problem.
We finally arrived at the academy and the classes for the day began.
After that, we were led to an arena where there were no spectators today but only a few stages perched up on the ground.
“The preliminaries would go on for three days.
Each student would have to fight three times to advance to the next round.
Remember, winning isn’t just it.
Your performance would be taken into consideration as well so even if you lose, there might still be a chance for you to advance.” Desmond explained before the first stage matches began.
There were only five stages and about a hundred students here today out of which, only fifty would advance.
No one I knew was in this group.
Laura and Rose were both in some other group but I was sure I didn’t have to worry about them.
[But she’s here] ‘Yeah, she is.’ Sarah Georgette.
She has been getting on my nerves for some reason.
Something was screaming inside of me that she was dangerous for some reason and I wasn’t sure what it was.
Whatever it was, she was someone to look out for.
I wonder what her skill would be though.
“Student Adrian and Student Sternward, on the stage number four.” Finally, my name was called after four hours of waiting.
Almost all of the matches were concluded and by far, I would say that I was not impressed.
Some of these would be the first ones to die in the war to come in five years.
[Almost five years] ‘Tomato, Tamato.’ “So you’re my opponent?
I was hoping for someone more worthy to test my skills.” My opponent was a boy with shining teeth and the most ordinary looks I had ever seen.
Who was he anyway?
I don’t think I have even seen him.
“I’m not?
Want me to take off this bracelet then?” I asked as I pointed at the mana dampener that had no effect on me but was enough to induce a reaction from my opponent.
“That would not be fair since you have already agreed to this.” He shamelessly replied but I could pick up hints of panic from his voice.
Whatever.
“Oi.
Give up now or I’m going to knock those teeth of yours out.” I said.
I wasn’t a maniac who hurt people for no reason at all.
If somehow we could end this peacefully, I was more than happy to go along with it.
“You must think you are special, don’t you?
Don’t belittle my hard work!” He was offended by my offer which in turn offended me.
Special?
Of course, I was special but did I have an easy time because of it, none.
Not even once in my life did I gain anything without pain, physical or mental.
Now this sh*t says that I was who I was because I was special.
That’s it, I will bash this guy as hard as I can.
“Ready, begin!” The referee shouted and the match began.
Sternward pushed himself quite heavily with his sword drawn, giving his all from the very beginning.
But all I could think was how easy it was going to be.
A straight linear jump, no defensive measure, and at least four different openings led to thirteen different scenarios.
This guy was handing me his already ordinary face on the platter to mess it up even further.
I sidestepped and backed up a bit to get out of his range.
The way he had thrown himself at me, he didn’t use any countermeasures to stop in case his attack didn’t work.
He was fast so I got where his confidence was coming from.
But, I was faster as I raised my hand and with full momentum, he bashed into it face first.
When it comes to fighting, only stats don’t matter.
Even in a street fight, if you just throw your fists blindly, you lose.
Here, where techniques matter more than stats, not using them to fight was an idiotic move.
“Winner, student Adrian.” The referee didn’t take long to announce my result.
Even he knew that this guy wasn’t getting up so he announced my victory as soon as Sternward’s body hit the floor.
I left the arena while a healer climbed up to the stage to ten to the unconscious Sternward.
“That was impressive.” A girl with dark blue hair approached me, Sarah Georgette.
I just stared at her back, without replying.
“Oh, I guess you don’t know who I am.” “I know who you are,” I replied as I turned my eyes away from her and added, “I just don’t know who you really are.” “Oh, being cryptic, are we?” She cooed as she stepped closer to me.
Dangerously close, and she whispered in my ear, “You don’t really have to know me.
And I don’t have to know you either.
We just have to know of each other.” She sounded like she was flirting with me but she really wasn’t.
She wasn’t trying to seduce me, she was trying to do something else and I let her be.
After all, I still didn’t know what her motive was and hastily acting could pull her off.
And also, it would deprive me of the fun I would have with her when her scheme would come crumbling down in front of her eyes.
I love especially those moments.
The shock people experience when they think their plan has no chance of failing but then it all goes south thanks to me.
“Well, now I know of you and you know of me.
But I will warn you, I have a very good memory.” I replied.
“Is that your way of saying you will always keep me fresh in your mind?” She smiled as she asked.
“Something like that,” I replied as a few notifications appeared in front of me.
[INT stat sufficient] [Charm failed] I turned my eyes to her wrist subtly when she wasn’t focused on them and smiled when I saw something familiar.
So that’s who she was.
Nice.
She would be a great addition to my list of individuals to break and destroy.
“Well, it was nice meeting you.
I sure do hope this isn’t our last meeting.” I said as I turned to leave.
“Oh, don’t worry.
I will make sure that doesn’t happen.” She said in the background and I didn’t need eyes on the back of my head to know she had a triumphant smile on her.
