The Archangel of Death - Chapter 132
132: The tournament begins 132: The tournament begins Chapter 132 “Welcome, everyone.
I, Sirius de Salazar, welcome you to the 132 Bellator tournament.
This event has been a proud history for all of us.
A chance for the younger generation to experience hardship and face obstacles to make a name for themselves in front of these extinguished guests.” Sirius went on and on about how lucrative this tournament was or how good this opportunity was for guys like us.
All I heard were lies.
These guys weren’t here to see us experience hardships, they were here to make us realize an ugly truth, ‘There’s always someone above you.’ This tournament wasn’t a simple first-year tournament.
The top three of the first years would fight the top three of the second years.
Given that this was a novel in which seven apostles were in the same class, one could already guess who the winner from among the first years would be.
And then when it came to the joint competition between the first years and the second years, the winner was obvious.
The main character always somehow won.
Now, another guessing game.
‘Who would Eric be fighting and winning against?’ The first rank of the second year was Matthew von Deus Lux, who was also the second crown candidate of the Cortum empire.
Who was also the person who would target the first year after this.
The whole first-year second-year cliché.
Anyway, the purpose of this tournament would totally backfire.
For the first time in history, the first years would win and leave quite a bit of dent in the pride of many people and inflate the ego of our dear seven kingdoms.
[Politics is everywhere] ‘Tell me about it.’ Not to mention the boring a*s speech delivered by Sirius that was full of lies and obvious implications.
I yawned and I made sure to be loud.
Not enough to reach the stage but those powerhouses with good hearing would definitely pick it up.
[You just love annoying people, don’t you?] ‘It’s the only way I can cope with living here.’ [That and beautiful girls] ‘Beautiful girls with bountiful assets.’ Sirius’ eyebrow flinched at my third yawn.
He glared at me mid speech to which I only shrugged my shoulders to convey my boredom.
He ignored me and continued his speech.
And I slept through most of it.
A skill I developed through school where I was smarter than my teachers and knew more than them so when they would teach with their mediocre knowledge, it would make me sleepy.
‘Sleeping in class is bad’ from personal experience so I had to develop a skill that allowed me to sleep with my eyes open.
The speech finally came to an end.
The first part of the preliminaries was very simple.
A mana sensitivity test.
The mana had to be at least D for you to advance to the tournament.
‘You got this, right?’ [Or you can just fail] ‘I can’t fail.
There’s something I need to do.’ [You still haven’t told me about that] ‘You will see.’ I didn’t think about this much longer.
I didn’t want Allison catching up on my thoughts so I made sure to keep it to myself.
[Fine] [I’ll take care of it] ‘Love you.’ [You’re too young for that] ‘Oh, you have no idea how old I really am.’ [I do and that’s why you’re still too young] ‘What the?
Really?’ [No comment] Color me surprised.
Allison was an ancient being.
Even more than me.
Now I was curious about her nature of being and I had a good guess with the hints she had dropped.
There were a total of a thousand students in the first year and that was after a lot of expulsions after the first and second tests.
Of course, the elite class which consisted of 150 students would all pass due to their high talent.
“Eric Tudor!” Eric was called.
The entire arena turned quiet in anticipation.
The superstar of the first year who was D+ at the time of admission.
It was difficult to advance to the C- from D+ but there were a lot of anticipations that he had taken the next step.
The strongest of the apostles, the apostle of Arya, stepped forward and placed his hand on the crystal ball perched on a pedestal.
The working of the crystal ball was simple.
From one to nine stars, signifying from E to divine though I was sure this one was a lower grade one so it won’t show more than four or five stars.
To distinguish between lower, middle, and higher subgrades, the colors of the crystal ball were used.
Yellow for lower grade, green for middle grade, and blue for higher grade.
Eric placed his hand on the crystal ball and after a few seconds, three stars appeared on it signifying that his rank was indeed C but what surprised everyone, including myself was his subgrade.
Eric was clearly C- at this stage but the crystal was glowing blue which meant his rank was actually C+.
[What are you so surprised about?] [He’s the chosen one] ‘Chosen prick he is.
Fu*kers have everything handed down.’ [Maybe it is talent] ‘Talent doesn’t mean anything.
If it did, I have it more than anyone yet even after 3,645,271 duels with my father, I haven’t won even once.’ If talent was everything, I would be the strongest being in the universe.
In all the universes.
I absorbed knowledge in a matter of years that took my masters all their lives yet still, I became stronger than all of them.
[All but one] ‘No.
I became stronger than all my masters.
My father’s not one of them.’ He only ever taught me how to live my life.
That doesn’t make him my mentor but my father.
[Some wise words] ‘His words.’ Anyway, Eric shocked the entire crowd but he wasn’t the only one.
All of the main characters seemed to have grown more than in the novel.
Sera was a C rank and so were Sasha, Layla, and Zefton.
Sophien also obtained a C+ which shocked the crowd once again.
Derrell, another saint candidate obtained C- along with Laura and Alicia.
Among the main characters, that only left Rose which I was pretty sure going to shock the entire world.
After all, they were about to see a B+ in the first year when it was a rank that even second-year graduates can rarely achieve.
“Student Adrian, come forward,” Michelle called me next before it was Rose’s turn.
‘You got this, right?’ [I will show the rank according to your level] Works for me.
Well, I guess everyone was in for another surprise.
I walked up to the pedestal under the resentful eyes of the seven kingdoms and the curious eyes of my allies.
I placed my hand on the crystal ball and slowly, one star began to form which then multiplied.
Then three and finally when everyone thought that was it, a fourth star formed and the color of the ball turned yellow slowly.
“Huh…?” A confused gasp escaped from someone in the crowd of students.
I knew who it was, Eric.
[Why are they acting surprised, anyway?] [You fought against a B+ rank vampire and demon] ‘They think I used something special.’ Though technically I did, it was only to kill the vampire.
“It… It seems there is a problem with the crystal ball.
I will call for a new one.” Michelle said after listening to the shocked whispers in the crown.
Those in the stands couldn’t see so they wouldn’t know until Michelle announced it.
A new crystal ball came, and I put my hands on it after Michelle’s go.
The result remained unchanged.
“B… B-…” Michelle quietly muttered to which I said, “You might want to be a little loud because I don’t think they heard you.” I pointed at the audience in the stands with my thumb.
Michelle exhaled, accepting the reality as she yelled, “B-!!!” The entire arena fell into chaos.
“Is it true?” One asked.
“Maybe the crystal ball is broken.” Another asked.
“They changed the ball just to be sure.
Are you blind?” another one quipped.
Then another.
Then another.
And that just kept on going for a while before I simply turned and made my way back to my spot.
“Wow.
Aren’t you full of surprises?” Sophien said, clearly impressed with me.
I chuckled and replied, “I still lost.” “Did you?” She quirked her eyebrow as she asked.
“Not really and I welcome that loss anytime,” I replied with a smile.
“You will have to work for that,” Sophien replied as she winked at me.
Okay, flirty Sophien was also hot as hell.
But, “If that surprised you, you are a long way away from that.” I said as I turned to see my cute pink-haired, slightly pissed knight making her way to the pedestal.
She turned to look at me to convey her displeasure and it seemed like it was going to take a lot of coddling to placate her.
“Please put your hand…” Michelle began to explain but Rose had already put her hand on the crystal.
Soon enough, just like me, four stars appeared but the color of the ball wasn’t yellow like mine, it was blue.
Another shock for poor Michelle who couldn’t even speak this time.
As for the students who could see the results, they clamped their mouths shut.
The reality began to sink in.
The power of true talent that no self-proclaimed god or will could bestow.
“Rose Roosevelt, B+.” eventually Michelle came out of her stupor and said, not loud like when she announced mine but in a moderate tone as if she still couldn’t believe it.
Another eruption from the crowd.
Not I could repeat everything in the crowd or I could just say that my reaction was nothing compared to this.
I mean, look at me.
I belonged to a family of powerhouses the entire human world combined couldn’t defeat so it was a surprise that I reached the rank B- at this age but that was all it was.
A surprise.
This was a shock.
Rose’s rank wasn’t just high, it was a rank that even the second years couldn’t achieve and currently, the second crown candidate, the uncrowned king of all the students of the school was at B-.
Long story short, the winner of this tournament had already been decided.
[You know it won’t be that easy, right?] Of course, it won’t be.
The concerned parties would make a fuss.
Especially the seven kingdoms.
There was no way they would let their prized apostles fight a monster and suffer a humiliating defeat.
No one would care about her hard work and what she went through to reach that point.
All they would care for would be their own pride.
So either she would be banned from this tournament or she would have to wear a dampener used for criminals mostly.
“It seems that the appropriate level for the test is too low for Miss Roosevelt.
Unfortunately, to give the other prospects a chance, we would have to do something about this.
Do you accept, student Roosevelt and student Adrian?” Sirius stood up after a lot of discussion in the VIP booth.
But wait a minute.
What did he just say?
Me too?
[Stop] [It’s useless anyway] ‘They’re trying to limit me and you are asking me to not to stand up for myself.’ [Who are you trying to fool with that bullshit?] [Aren’t you just thinking how to rip them off somehow with this?] ‘What do you take me for?
Some gangster?’ ‘No.
I am just going to ask for a fair compensation for my troubles.’ Rose turned to look at me to which I nodded and turned to Sirius as I smiled and said, “Of course we do.” He was taken aback when I replied because I was sure he was expecting me to agree.
“Why would we limit ourselves for them who them?
It’s their fault they aren’t as strong as us.
We all had the same starting point and we are simply ahead on the track.” I further politely explained myself with a smile.
Sirius was left speechless when another one from the crowd who I suspected to be from the seven kingdoms said, “Wouldn’t it be unfair to other students just because they are not as talented as you?” “Do you see me holding the title of an apostle?
No offense.” I argued while also apologizing to Sophien.
The guy was taken aback like Sirius as well.
However, unlike that idiot, Sirius saw what I was trying to do.
