The Archangel of Death - Chapter 101
101: The first attack 101: The first attack Chapter 101 “Can’t say I’m impressed.” I nonchalantly said that turned all the heads of the twenty-four students at the digging site toward me, with their eyes narrowed and scowls on their faces, I would deduce they weren’t happy with my assessment.
[You think?] ‘That’s some nerve from these brats.’ If they wanted praise, they should have done a good job.
I made no effort to take back my compliment and said, “But it will do for now.
Let us head back to the camp.
You all need rest.” Many students weren’t still happy but they kept their annoyance to themselves.
It’s not like they could do anything about it.
I have long since proven that I am strong.
Even though I haven’t taken part in any duel after the shining hair boy and the compulsory duels that I wing with Rose, those small opportunities were enough to show how strong I was.
Especially to Zefton and Layla who witnessed my abilities firsthand.
Although Layla is on friendly terms with me, the fear of the strong cannot be avoided even then.
And it’s not just them, even Eric is aware of my strength, and seeing how he hadn’t messed with me, he is wary of me.
If three apostle candidates were cautious to this extent, these small fries could pick up those signals since they weren’t idiots if they had made it this far.
It was the natural instinct of the weak to bow to the strong after all.
And the second reason they didn’t utter a complaint was because they saw what I did to the camp, alone.
The perfect job left many agape in astonishment at the changes to the camp.
It wasn’t just open ground anymore but proper camps made from the furs of the ice kumas, the wooden wall around the camp, and, “What is his horrendous smell?” Unexpectedly it wasn’t a girl who pointed this out but our very own Zefton.
“Oh, I didn’t know you had a sensitive nose, Zefton.” Still, he should have felt it the first time he was here.
Guess, he was too surprised then.
Anyway, “There are sixteen boys and nine girls among us.
Four boys are to share one tent each and the same goes for three girls for one camp.
Any questions?” “Yes.” Layla said and asked, “What is this smell?” “All in good time, my friend.
Now all of you go and rest.” Of course, I dodged the answer because if I answered, it would be very easy for the professors to deduce what the smell is for but so far, I have only tried to get rid of what I didn’t need and used what I could.
[…] Yeah~ that’s not going to fool them.
[Which also means acting oblivious won’t work] ‘But it’s not like they can do anything about it.’ I haven’t used anything from the outside except for the basic things.
Sure, how would I know to bring them instead of anything else?
The answer is simple.
I simply wanted to be prepared for anything.
It’s not like they can inspect my inventory.
Even the first elder can’t inspect the system inventory let alone the people at the academy.
There was no evidence that I had prior knowledge of the test.
Everyone settled into the camps and I got to loitering around.
I was still quite bummed because of my growth issue.
‘This is why I don’t like Rpg’s.’ There were only three hours left until the first siege and everyone was sleeping like logs.
I didn’t bother with them and kept an eye around.
It wasn’t necessary since I knew no monster would be attacking us here.
The reason was simple; they weren’t programmed to.
The artifact system is a program.
Only programmed things happen in here.
[Of course, programs can be hacked and altered] ‘Don’t jinx it please.’ She was right.
Artifact hacking is a thing.
That’s how the accident in the third test happened.
Well, that story is for another time so for now, let’s focus on this.
Two and a half hours passed by in a jiffy and I started to wake everyone from their sweet sleep.
Of course, it was difficult to wake some of them up such as Zefton who slept as if there was no tomorrow.
Still, it was a wonder how uttering, ‘Layla can see your undergarments,’ did the trick.
Even his subordinates were amazed.
Poor guys.
I wonder if they were the ones who have to wake him up usually.
One would think that Zefton would be living alone in a villa like me but not every kingdom can afford to splurge money like that in Bellator City especially if the said person didn’t belong to the royal family but a noble family and that said noble family can’t own a luxurious villa in the Bellator city even if the individual in concern was an apostle candidate.
So Zefton kind of lives in a shared house.
A house that is made by the nobles of the said kingdom to avoid embarrassment living in the lower-level districts.
And the leader of the said house must obviously be the strongest one and hence in this case, our dear Zefton.
I feel like I have shared unnecessary information.
Anyway, I loudly announced my presence outside of Alicia’s tent who acknowledged my presence and began waking the other girls in her tent.
I did the same to Layla, and she did the same.
I let them decide who would wake the ones up in the third tent since I didn’t know anyone in there.
The time of the siege was upon us and all the preparations were done.
“Okay now listen everyone, of the three attacks mentioned by the professors, one of them is going to happen right now and we have prepared ourselves for it.” Everything needs a speech.
I also have one prepared right now.
“Sometimes, you don’t need fancy powers to deal with threats.
Sometimes, a simple strategy is the best approach and we, have prepared for that approach.” Of course, I was the one who did most of the work but it wouldn’t hurt alerting the truth a bit.
“So now, now is the moment of truth.
To see if you can do what is expected of you?
Or will you just resort to the barbaric ways of fighting to the death?
Let us begin.
And watch!
How great winners we can be!!!” I ended my speech.
[What does any of this have anything to do with this situation?] ‘Oh, my dear Allison.
No one understands a speech.
You just have to hype yourself up by thinking that the person on the platform is saying something important.’ My speech right now had nothing to do with the situation right now but even if it did, I doubt more than one or two people would have really understood it.
“Now take those bags, and throw them into the pit you have dug which is embarrassingly a pit because of how pathetically you dug it!” I shouted when everyone was just staring at me, at a loss for what to do.
They snapped out of the strange trance at my shout and the physical fighters hurriedly picked one bag each.
These bags were made from the ice kuma skin and they were tightly packed so the contents inside don’t reveal their presence to the outside.
However, I doubt the fall of about seven meters would keep them intact.
As expected, on impact, they tore apart and I shouted once again before the students could smell it, “Now, cover your noses!” The students were all confused by my new order.
Alicia hurriedly covered her nose and Layla followed suit and seeing her, Zefton covered his nose as well.
As for those who were confused, well, tough luck.
Pretty soon, a horrendous smell spread throughout the camp, and even those who were covering their noses were stung by it.
Soon, sounds of vomiting and cursing spread throughout the camp.
The students were so distraught that they didn’t even think about running away.
Sucks to be them.
Lucky for them though, it won’t last for long.
Because….
Sinch….
The weird sound coming from all our crystals stopped everyone in their tracks and soon, howls followed.
They weren’t wolf howls but a bit on the short side, like dogs.
Correction, exactly like dogs.
The wall wasn’t very high so in the distance, a fog could be seen about three feet high.
It wasn’t fog but the snow raised by the creatures traveling towards us.
“Prepare for batt—” Zefton shouted but I interrupted him, “Physical combatants are to ensure that the wall remains intact.
Enforce it with your body.
As for the mages, shoot those who climb out of the pit.” The party stopped.
To be honest, they were very reluctant to listen to my commands given the unreasonable commands I have given until now that made no sense.
“You heard him!!!
MOVE!!!” It was surprising how my first supporter was Zefton and not anyone else.
Seeing Zefton, his lackeys moved and then the rest followed suit.
“What are those?” Layla asked as she took the spot to my right while Alicia took the spot to my left.
I was the mage by classification of my skills hence why I wasn’t reinforcing the walls.
And there was another reason why I wasn’t.
“Snow hounds.
Blind dogs.
Have a strong sense of smell.” My voice wasn’t loud but I was sure Layla and those around me could hear me.
And like I said, they weren’t stupid so some might figure out why the smell.
Layla seemed to have understood too.
The nose of these hounds would have warned them of the cavity in the ground but the smell would help cover them up.
After all, what I threw in the pit were rotten intestines of the ice kumas that have been fermenting for almost six hours now.
The smell would be enough to drive a normal person crazy.
These kids survived so far because they have mana protecting their metabolism.
So it would be far more worse for the hounds who have a strong sense of smell because they only operate on smell.
They have no eyes.
Now the next part is a gamble.
I have no idea whether these dogs are rabid or not because if they are, then nothing is stopping them from coming to us willingly even through this horrifying smell, and jumping into the pit to get to us but if they aren’t and they decide to turn around, well, then all we can do is revert back to the old barbarian ways hence why I asked the physical fighters to enforce the wall.
[The ones you were talking about in your speech] ‘Just to plant the idea.’ Fortunately, the dogs were indeed rabid and willingly jumped into the pit.
The only problem was their numbers.
They could easily step on each other and scale the walls of the bit.
But as expected of a mindless creature, they chose to not cooperate and fill the pit around the camp trying to find a way into the camp.
[Magic bullets] I broke down a few canons and shot magic bullets at the hanging bags of liquidized animal fat on the wall on the outside.
They exploded and rained down on the dogs in the pit.
The next step was very simple.
“Fire mages, shootttt!!!!” The prepared mages didn’t think for a second time and shot everything they had into the pit.
Even the mages who weren’t fire attributed started shooting.
The pig fat was ignited and started burning.
The fire quickly spread throughout the pit and soon, the howls of pain and the burnt smell of meat followed.
Everything in the pit just burned and we just watched.
It didn’t even come to a fight.
These were just simple E+ rank monsters.
They didn’t even have mana so there was nothing protecting them from fire.
Soon enough the howls stopped but the fire kept on burning, that will warm us throughout the night.
“Now, rest.
You have three hours to rest.
I’m sure you can do so much better now that the atmosphere is warm.” Everyone was stunned at the outcome of the battle and no one knew what to say.
Some simply began leaving and the rest just simply followed suit.
Soon enough, it was just me and Alicia left who kept staring at the fiery pit.
I let her be and headed to my own tent which was perched only for me because I’m special and went to sleep for a few hours that I had.
