The Archangel of Death - Chapter 100
100: Preparing (1) 100: Preparing (1) Chapter 100 I avoided the slash of the Ice Kuma and shot a few ‘Magic canons’ at it.
As expected, its resistance to nonphysical attacks was quite high.
Even after shooting it with seventeen canons, it was still very much lively.
A stark realization that not all monsters are the same.
Roughly, this monster was around rank C which was the same as a slime of the second floor yet that could be killed with just one magic bullet but this one wasn’t dead even after that many magic canons.
I once again dodged the swing of its paws and equipped the ‘Dagger of Desaant’.
I immediately felt lighter and it became easier to dodge the monster’s already slow attacks.
I slashed at its ankles, trying to cut its tendons and it proved to be a lot more easier than using Magic canon to kill it.
The next slash was aimed at its eye and it was easy enough to deliver.
It roared in pain while one of its hands instinctively clutched its left eye.
Seeing an opportunity, I slashed its neck and then again since one or two slashes weren’t enough.
After a few more slashes, it fell to the ground, dead.
‘What a pity.’ I sighed inwardly as killing the monsters inside the artifact didn’t earn me experience points.
After all, this test was a remnant of the past.
Killing a memory doesn’t earn me anything.
Besides, even if I were to kill a currently alive thing in here such as my fellow students, they won’t die in reality so there is no death to be harvested so I won’t gain any experience that way as well.
This was a waste of time but I needed to last at least until the final test of the first year to see what my purpose for being here was.
Of course, until then, I will have to go along with the norms of the academy.
I could half a*s it but coming second isn’t my style.
Just as I finished storing the Kuma in my inventory, a message appeared in my vision.
[Because of the nature of the stored being, it cannot be taken out of the artifact] It meant that the Kuma would disappear from my inventory the moment I left the artifact.
It was a gamble in the first place if I could store them in the inventory or if I would have to carry them.
Seeing that I could, the efficiency of my plans would increase a lot.
Just at that moment, a group of Kumas could be seen running towards me from a mile away.
They must have heard the roars of the Kuma I fought and that would make these guys the ‘backup’.
I prepared myself and conjured about fifty Magic canons around me.
I decided to change the strategy and instead of hitting soft spots, I aimed for the eyes of these guys.
After a quick count, there were thirteen of these guys so I was pretty confident that even if a few canons went to waste, I would still end up hitting all of them.
I was quite confident about my aim.
As soon as they were in range, I unleashed the canons I had prepared and after a few misses, I landed magic canons on their eyes.
Unfortunately, due to their resistance being very high, not much damage was delivered and not many were even hurt a little because of their strong eyeguards.
Still, it stopped them for a few seconds which was something I could work with.
Exercising my speed to the full advantage, I launched myself at the closest Kuma and stabbed its eye with my dagger.
Unfortunately, again, I couldn’t penetrate deep enough to damage its brain.
Although I was faring well in terms of speed, my strength was messed up because of my hastiness.
I pulled out, jumped back, and created a little distance between ourselves.
The rest of the bears snapped out hearing their comrade wailing in pain and jumped at me.
Dodging them wasn’t difficult but it was difficult getting a proper foothold to accumulate enough strength to pierce their eyes.
However, a C rank monster’s stamina wasn’t infinite whereas mine was decent for the stats of a B rank endurance.
Pretty soon, the opportunity presented itself and I drove my dagger through the same spot of the first bear I had attacked with proper force this time.
I pierced its head easily and it died on the spot.
The rest jumped at me at once but I used celestial guard and magic canon at the same time to block those I couldn’t dodge and distract those I stood the chance to dodge.
Sure enough, once the kumas were tired, it was easy to kill them one by one.
My skills helped a lot because no matter how terrifying their strength was, my INT stat was almost A rank now.
Although their resistance helped with magic canon, it didn’t help when it came to the rest of my skills.
I didn’t use any destructive skills because I needed their bodies intact so I didn’t use Eclipse and kept myself to physical attacks.
Once all the Kumas were dead and combined I had hunted fourteen, I decided it was enough for what I intended to do and headed back to the camp.
It took me about two hours to go, hunt, and come back.
The digging was still going on and the speed was quite decent.
They were already thirty percent done and I was sure they would be done before it mattered.
The timber-cutting team however was disappointing.
For one, they didn’t have Alicia’s buff, and second, they didn’t have many physical blessed.
They were mostly mages and mages have awful physical strength let alone stamina.
I pulled the kumas out of my inventory which garnered a lot of attention.
I decided to ignore them and got to work.
Using my dagger, I skinned them expertly, separating skin, innards, meat, and fat.
Fat was what I required for my next step.
Once I was done, which wasn’t very long given my skill, I hung the furs out to dry and threw away the innards inside the cavity that was dug.
It would smell soon so it was better to burn it but the awful smell was needed for something else entirely.
Besides, something even more horrifying would soon begin to smell.
By my calculations, the fat was enough so I went to the timber team.
They had cut around about two hundred by now which was honestly very slow because I had thought they would be finished by now.
It wasn’t that difficult compared to digging but it was expected from these kids who weren’t used to any type of physical labor.
I stepped forward and stored all the trees that were already cut into my inventory and addressed Layla who was freezing a tree base to cut it more easily.
“I will take these to the camp and work with what we have right now.
You guys should also hurry up or we won’t have much time before the attacks begin.” She turned to me and nodded.
Exhaustion was written on her face but she didn’t say anything about it.
Pity I couldn’t give them a stamina potion.
It wasn’t as expensive as an MP recovery potion but the problem was using outside objects to make the test easier.
Since it wasn’t just a shovel or an axe, the point deduction would also be quite high I suspected.
I returned to the camp and pulled out all the trees.
I cut off the excess branches sticking out and piled them separately.
I then made a fire using those branches and started rendering the animal fat I obtained from the Kumas earlier using stone slabs.
I used a makeshift bucket with Kuma skin and collected the liquid fat that was rendered.
I continued doing so while I trimmed the trees in five-foot high stakes.
It was a nice exercise and it didn’t take me more than an hour before I had to go again and collect more trees the timber team had axed down.
I repeated the process and got myself five buckets of oil that were highly flammable and smelled horrible.
About a thousand stakes that I would now combine to make a wooden spike wall around the camp’s boundary.
It took too long to perform such simple tasks but my stats were not helpful since they were quite low.
As for my stamina, luckily, I could consume potions directly from the inventory so I didn’t tire out even after four hours of non-stop work.
I used tree bark to tie up the trees together and used a stress system to hold them together.
It wouldn’t come undone easily but I don’t know what the circumstances may bring.
I then began digging in the ice and started placing them.
After digging the ice and burying the makeshift walls, their height was reduced to about four feet but it was okay since the first kind of monsters wouldn’t be more than three feet tall.
They wouldn’t be too strong either.
The problem would be their numbers.
The trees were enough to cover almost two-thirds of the camp boundary and I hoped the team would finish soon since there wasn’t much time left before the siege and the digging needed to be completed as well.
Just as I was done with everything, I saw Layla heading in my direction, her mouth agape as she took in the changes around the camp.
Safe to say she was so shocked that she even forgot about the horrendous smell of fat burning.
“You… wha… how…” She was having great difficulty putting together her words.
Ignoring all that, I asked, “Is the wood cutting done?” I was in quite a hurry.
There were only a few hours left before the attack and there was still a lot left to be done including rest that these guys would definitely need after such a taxing job.
“Ye… Yes.” She wasn’t still over her shock but she succeeded in answering after a slight stutter.
“Great,” I replied and headed straight to the forest and stored the trees in my inventory.
The rest of the team was on the snow, huffing and puffing, some even passed out.
I returned to the camp to see Layla examining the changes around the camp and instructed, “After a brief break, bring everyone here and join the digging team.
We need to be done before the attack.” Layla didn’t ask anything and simply left after a slight nod.
I also got to work.
Since the oil-making process was done, all I had to do was simply make the wall which didn’t take much time.
By the time I had cut all the trees and made the stakes, the timber team had returned and they were too, astonished by the changes around the camp.
“Don’t just stand there.
Get to work.” I yelled at them which was enough to snap them out.
They begrudgingly left to help the digging team as I continued my own work.
I checked the time and there were still a little over four hours left which by my calculations, was enough to get all the work done.
It wasn’t long before I finished the wall around the camp.
It was just a four feet high wall so there was no need for stairs or planks for foothold.
Done with everything, I was taking a brief break when Layla and Zefton, approached me.
Zefton was covered in dirt and grime while Layla also had dirt spots on her face and arms.
“Done?” I asked before they could report.
“Yes.” They both replied at the same time.
They seemed and sounded tired.
A lot.
I smiled and said, “You two look great in that get-up.” Zefton was irritated at my teasing while Layla just scoffed.
“Well, let’s go see if there is any need for improvements.” I stood up and we all headed to the site together to examine the work.
