Chapter 404: Chapter 404- Situation In The Capital (2)
The matter was dire; it looked like he needed to go to the capital as soon as possible.
“Very well, we shall head out right this instant. Wait here while I get my knights.”
With that, Reinhardt got out of the hall.
The first thing he did was inform his acting vice commander and the holy knights of his order. The situation in the capital, the sudden behaviour of the Abyssal Compass, and the mysterious disappearance of the knights, it all looked extremely strange.
If his knights were going to be embroiled in the midst of all that chaos, they needed to be prepared appropriately.
After informing the knights, he told the matter to his subordinates and secretary.
“It looks like I will be away from the city again”.
“Leave the Snowpoint City to me, Lord Reinhardt. I’ll see to it personally that all projects are completed so that when you return, you can open them”. His capable secretary assured.
“Yeah, I’ll be counting on you”.
Reinhardt, now donned in his divine armor, nodded before heading out towards the training ground where his group of knights were waiting for him. The messenger followed behind.
Soon, they were at the training ground.
“Commander” Kevin always the boisterous one, shouted. Around him were the usual group with a few more knights beside them.
For this mission, he chose only a small elite group of knights to tag along. The reason being that he cannot teleport any more than that.
“Hm? I don’t see the carriages?” The messenger, oblivious of his skill, questioned.
“Don’t worry, we are going to use a different means of travel” Saying that, Reinhardt and the knights got busy checking their equipment.
A while later, it was go time. Everyone grabbed onto him. For the skill [Aetherial Stride] to work, they need to be in direct contact with him or at least linked with another person, like a human chain.
Before the messenger could question the strangeness of the situation, the space around them blurred, and the next second, they were already in the capital.
“This!!” It was no surprise that his jaw dropped to the ground. Everyone who experiences the skill for the first time has that kind of face.
“Let’s go,” Reinhardt wasted no time and headed for the royal palace.
On his way, his [Eyes of Divine Clarity] were continuously active. He could see the tremendous amount of demonic energy leaking out of the ground already.
Although the leakage hadn’t reached a degree where it could be seen by ordinary people, this level of contamination wasn’t normal. Something serious was going on inside the underground vault.
If nothing was done, all that demonic energy would leak out, causing mayhem in the capital.
Early level of contamination would make the air thicker, and those who breathe it would start displaying more irritation. Their negative emotions would build and finally erupt in a violent manner.
Mid level contamination would start affecting the environment and sky of the capital. People’s behaviour cannot be judged with reason anymore. They would start displaying levels of demonification.
While at this level, knights would be fine, long exposure to it can weaken them.
Late stage contamination implies that the corruption was in its final stage. All life would cease, and the place would turn black, becoming what humans now called the Tainted Lands.
While the knights with their level are still somehow able to combat this level of contamination, they cannot live in such an environment. It was also for this reason that no knight order stay in the Tainted Lands and return as soon as the objective of their expedition is met.
Right now, it was inching dangerously closer to the early phase of contamination.
.
Royal Palace, Audience Chamber…
Reinhardt and everyone stood in front of the crown. Facing them while sitting on the throne with her legs crossed was the queen.
With one heel suspended gracefully from her toes, her every small gesture was extremely enchanting.
Was it him, or did her charm just suddenly skyrocket? All the knights he brought with him got charmed easily. Thankfully, she was still wearing her veil.
“Thank you for answering the summons, my knight”.
“It is my duty, the Queen need not thank me”.
As the situation was dire, the Queen did not stand on ceremony either and proceeded to tell them the ongoing situation inside the underground vault.
The messenger’s words earlier already painted a pretty grim picture. However, the queen’s information made them truly realise how grave the situation actually was.
The water in the capital has already started getting contaminated, and many people have already fallen sick which also included the king.
Marquis Herman responded with everything he could, but his powers alone weren’t enough to suppress the demonic energy any longer.
“We need to make haste. I will open the gate to the underground vault; the rest will be up to you”.
Promptly, Reinhardt and his knights were shown to the path leading to the underground chamber.
A gigantic heavy metal door blocked their path.
The Queen, followed by her attendant, who was similarly masking her face with a veil, took out a large key the size of an adult human’s arm.
Once the key was fit into the keyhole, the mechanism inside started making noise, and soon the heavy doors creaked open.
At that very instant, a baleful pressure, dense enough to make one’s hair stand on end, rushed out from the deep darkness beyond, aiming to escape. However, before it could get out, a powerful barrier stopped it from escaping and pushed it back again.
GULP… The pressure from just opening the path leading to the underground vault was already so tremendous, one had to wonder what in the actual hell was going down there. The squires gulped their throats, looking a little unnerved.
“My knight, I will pray for your victory,” the queen spoke, clasping her hand in a prayer. As a non combatant, she cannot go any further, nor can she help the knights in any way other than praying for them.
