Chapter 497: Never Go Down Without A Fight
Jason appreciated what Hesabeth said about him, but at the end of the day it was useless. They still had to pay the ten billion gold coins, and there was nothing they could do about that. The other council members also began to leave the hall, and Jason looked up at where Rubik was sitting, and he frowned when he saw Rubik’s mechanical gaze staring him down! Rubik kept his eyes on Jason for a few seconds before he also stood from his seat and walked away from the meeting room. One of the last people to leave was Farlow, and the look on his face showed that things hadn’t gone as he hoped. But Jason knew that Farlow had done his best, so he gave Farlow a nod of understanding, and Farlow returned it respectfully before he also turned and left the hall.
A Faceless Keeper walked out from a wall to the left, and Jason watched as they came over to him and Riyala.
“King Rubik shall meet with you in a private room to discuss the final details of the payment you must make to him. If you are prepared at this moment, I shall lead you to the meeting room.”
Riyala took in a shuddering breath and sighed before nodding, and Jason was about to nod as well, but he stopped and turned when he saw Gina heading straight for him. Gina hurried into Jason’s arms and hugged him tight, and she had a pained look on her face as she spoke into his ear.
“You did great, baby. I’m so sorry.”
Gina’s broken voice affected Jason more than even the trial results. It was obvious that Gina really wanted them to win, and Jason let out another calm sigh and tightened his hold around her! Jason had also wanted to win, but he knew that sometimes things just didn’t go as you planned. They did their best here today, and there was nothing more they could have done. The other members from Earth and Radagan also came up and spoke with Jason and Riyala for a few seconds. The soldiers from Radagan assured Riyala that she had done her best for them, and they didn’t hold her responsible for the loss. Riyala just gave them a sad smile and a nod, but Jason could see somewhere deep in Riyala’s eyes that she was desperately holding back from breaking down. Even though Earth would suffer a lot from this payment, Jason knew that Radagan might suffer it even more. Riyala already blamed herself for dragging Jason and Earth into this mess, and the fact that they were still rebuilding after the Battle for Radagan meant that they couldn’t spare a lot of money. Right now, Riyala was feeling the weight of both guilt and dread, but she still tried her best to smile!
“Maybe now you’ll finally understand what it means to go against your betters. This was nothing but a fool’s errand, and the results today show that your pointless struggle was nothing but a waste of time.”
A voice suddenly spoke from behind the group, and Jason looked over to see a Machina woman with a smug smile on her face. Gina turned around with a look that screamed murder, and Freya actually blinked and took a half-step back when she saw Gina’s expression! But Jason put his hand on Gina’s lower back and told her to calm down through the mental link, and Gina let out a huff as she turned away from Freya. Freya narrowed her eyes at Gina and clicked her tongue before she spoke.
“You all will learn to respect your betters one way or another. Let today be a warning to you to not go against the orders of your Overlord in the future. And as for you, Jason Marc of Earth. I should warn you that your status as an Enigma has been reopened for proper review. I wonder what sort of conclusion we will come to regarding you after all this…”
Freya stepped back after saying this, and a low chuckle escaped her as she left. Gina still looked like she wanted to kill the woman, and it was only Jason’s hand that prevented her from lashing out! Jason narrowed his eyes at where Freya had gone, and he took in a calming breath before he turned to the Faceless Keeper who was still standing at the side patiently. Jason told them that they were ready for the meeting with Rubik.
The Faceless Keeper nodded calmly and gestured for Jason and Riyala ot follow them.
“Very well, this way please.”
The Faceless Keeper began to walk towards the eastern wall of the Hall of Fallen Heroes, and Jason gave Gina a kiss and told her that he would be back before saying goodbye to the rest of the group. Riyala hugged Gina, and she smiled at her soldiers and the others from Earth before she fell into step beside Jason, and they both followed the Keeper into the stone wall.
….
The room that Jason and Riyala appeared in was organised like a business meeting room back on Earth. There was an oval table in the center of the room with three chairs arranged on either side of the table, and in the middle of the table sat a small transparent globe. The Faceless Keeper directed Jason and Riyala to take a seat on one side of the table and told them that the Overlord would be with them soon before leaving. Once they were alone, Jason finally heard Riyala let out a shuddering breath as most of her defences fell, and Riyala’s head dropped as tears fell from her eyes. Jason reached over and took Riyala’s face in his hand while leaning over.
“Hey, come on, you did the best you could. You don’t need to cry about this.”
Riyala sniffled, and she tried to clean her tears as she spoke in a low voice.
“I know, I just… I really wanted us to win. They’re forcing us to pay for something that isn’t even our fault, and now they’re threatening to tag you as an Enigma. Why are they doing this? This is just so… fucked up.”
Jason raised a brow when he heard Riyala curse, and then he chuckled slightly. Jason was sure that Gina was the one who taught Riyala that word! Jason brought Riyala close, and he kissed her gently before saying.
“We’ll get through this just like always. If they want us to pay, then we’ll pay, and if they try to come for me, then I’ll fight back. They have power over us right now, and that makes them think they can do whatever they want. But we’re not going to roll over for them. Do you understand?”
Riyala sniffled again as she used her sleeve to clean her tears, and she leaned over and gave Jason another deep kiss to try to reassure herself! Once they separated, Jason gave Riyala a small smile, and he finally leaned back as he saw three people walking out from the wall opposite them. One of them was Freya, the second person was the same Emissary who had brought the news of the treaty violation to Radagan. And in front of those two was the Overlord of their Primordial Domain, Rubik. Now that Rubik was standing at full height, Jason realised that he was extraordinarily tall! Rubik stood at nearly nine feet tall, and he had a bulky build that had been created from various mechanical parts woven together perfectly! Rubik’s entire body radiated power, and his aura drowned the room in its essence! Riyala stood up and gently bowed to the Overlord in greeting once he appeared, but Jason stayed seated with a blank look on his face even after Rubik came to stand in front of them.
The two men locked eyes in a tense stare down, and Jason frowned as a thought crossed his mind,
‘I still feel like there’s something seriously off about his mana.’
