Chapter 495: The Natural Order
“Their actions were carried out to prevent any further attacks from a foreign power, and they did not seek to gain any political ground from their actions. I believe that classifies as a form of defence.”

This time, surprisingly, it was Farlow who spoke up. Jason looked over to the Elven King, and he saw Farlow glancing over at Hesabeth with an expressionless look on his face. Hesabeth rose a brow at Farlow, and her lips split into a vicious smile.

“So you’ve finally decided to show who you stand with, have you? I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. You always were very close to the Avarans.”

“I am simply stating a truth. Do not twist the articles of the treaty to please your bias. And besides, it is like Jason Marc of Earth had said. There was no sitting ruler of the world before the Sovereign took control, and therefore, there was no coup that officially placed the Sovereign as the leader of Radagan. If your scenario is to stand, then what the humans did on Radagan would be a lawful liberation rather than an unlawful intervention.”

“Well, isn’t that a convenient way to describe things. We haven’t even proven that the Sovereign was a conqueror rather than a militant ruler, and you already make the distinction on your own.”

Hesabeth couldn’t help but chuckle softly when she heard Farlow’s words and it was obvious that she thought it was fucking hilarious! The other members of the council all had varying expressions on their faces. Some of them, like Rak’hael and Val’kat, seemed to agree with Hesabeth’s words, and they were giving Farlow a disapproving look for his argument, but there were others like Lamina and Baron Skarr, the draconian king, who seemed to agree with Farlow’s argument. A lot of the other council members still looked neutral, and Jason turned when he heard a soft voice speak up from behind him.

Lamina had a curious look on her face as she spoke.

“I believe Farlow has the facts right. We cannot claim that Jason’s actions were in violation of the treaty since the Sovereign had taken control of a world without a ruler.”

Hesabeth clicked her tongue from the side, and she spoke up with spite.

“You would know all about that, wouldn’t you? Taking control of worlds without rulers is a specialty of yours, after all.”

Lamina suddenly took in a quick breath as she turned to Hesabeth with narrowed eyes, and Hesabeth raised a brow at her and dared her to say anything!

“Please, remain focused on the matter at hand.”

The purple mist spoke up again before things could escalate, and Lamina turned away from Hesabeth in irritation before looking to Jason.

“The reports we received state that you were the one who killed the Sovereign. Is this true?”

Jason nodded to Lamina, and Lamina leaned forward as she asked.

“When taking his life, did you have any intentions of using it as a means of manipulating the political landscape of Radagan?”

The room fell silent at that question, and Jason could immediately tell that this was a trick question. There was only one correct answer to this question, and that was obviously ‘no’, but at the same time, it wasn’t possible for Jason to say no because everyone knew that Jason had gone to Radagan with Riyala, and she had taken over as the highest authority in Radagan because of his actions. Besides, from what Riyala had told Jason during their planning, there was no way you could lie to the Council since they had methods to pick out lies easily! Jason could see a small smile spreading on Lamina’s face as she waited for Jason’s answer, and Jason realised that she had asked this question on purpose! Jason felt a curious feeling rising from inside him. Lamina hadn’t said anything against him all this time, and this made Jason think that she was on his side. But if that was the case, then why was she asking a question like this?

‘Is she testing me?’

This thought went through Jason’s mind, and Jason just released a calm breath as he finally answered.

“We attacked Radagan due to the Sovereign’s actions against us. It was a retaliation aimed at ensuring he could never attack us again. Whatever happened in Radagan as a result of this retaliation does not concern Earth in any way.”

That one answer made Lamina smile proudly, and when Jason saw her nod, he realised that he had passed her test. The other members of the council were either smiling knowingly or frowning in slight irritation at Jason’s answer, and Jason heard Rubik speak up in his mechanical voice.

“Your actions in Radagan were strategically laid out as a measure to displace the seated head of a world under my domain, and I will not stand for it. Whether or not you believe that the actions of the Sovereign are classified as a coup d’état under the tenets of the treaty, there is no denying that it falls under the bracket of ‘Natural Order’ described in Article 56, Section 3 of the treaty. The actions of stronger creatures upon weaker creatures within a world are not to be interfered with by any member of another world since that would be a disruption of the Natural Order of that world’s ecosystem.”

Jason actually felt anger rising from his heart when he heard Rubik say this, and Jason was surprised when he heard murmuring coming from some of the members of the council! What Rubik said was true, and it was actually written in the treaty, but the article had been written as a way to ensure that animal ecosystems within a world wouldn’t be disrupted or exploited by other worlds! Even if you saw one species hunting another weaker species into extinction, you are not allowed to intervene so long as you are not from that world, since that would affect the natural order. But the fact that this sovereign was talking about the dragonborn of Radagan like they were fucking animals just pissed Jason off!

“Are you trying to claim that the Sovereign’s actions against the people of Radagan were justified? Do you consider the dragonborn to be so far beneath you that you would only sit and watch as they are hunted to extinction?”

Jason’s accusatory tone echoed through the hall like a gong, and Rubik’s eye flashed as he stared down at Jason and spoke calmly.

“Feelings play no part in the Natural Order. Our moral or emotional inclination cannot be taken into consideration in this matter. You interfered in the Natural Order of a world outside your own, and it was a member of Radagan that ordered the attack on Earth that led to mass destruction and loss of life. That is the fact.”

Once Rubik said all this, Jason had the sudden, desperate urge to just kill him! Jason could tell that none of the things they had laid out here had even gotten through to the Overlord at all! It was almost like Rubik had also replaced his brain with a robotic brain that prevented him from feeling any form of emotion! But Jason also knew that this wasn’t just because Rubik was strict with the rules. There had to be something else at play here that Rubik wanted, and Jason felt irritated by the fact that he hadn’t been able to figure out what it was yet.

‘It can’t be money that he’s looking for. He’s the overlord, so I’m sure his world is one of the richest in our Primordial Domain. Then why is he doing this?’
