Chapter 618: That thing is evil
Damon stared.

The First stared harder.

“Where is my dragon baby?” Damon opened and closed his mouth.

“…this is the legendary calamity?” The First muttered. “That is not what it is supposed to look like. This must be its infant disguise. Its larval form. Its compressed manifestation… it… it should not… why is it a cat?!”

“I am asking you the same thing. You told me it would be a dragon. Why is it a cat?”

The kitten tilted its head.

“Meow?”

“Looks are deceiving! Kill it! Kill it now!” The First snapped out of it and did not hesitate anymore. He went straight for the kill, his arm turning into a spear of shadow aimed at the kitten’s forehead.

The kitten blinked once.

Just once.

A pulse of abyssal pressure exploded out from its tiny body. The First’s spear twisted off course mid-strike.

His entire arm bent sideways at an impossible angle.

CRACK.

A scream tore out of him as he was sent flying backward, crashing through a shadow ridge hard enough to split it clean down the middle.

Damon lifted the kitten with one hand.

“…okay,” he said slowly. “You are a cat, and you are so damn cute.”

The kitten purred. It immediately jumped onto Damon’s shoulder and started nuzzling against his neck, rubbing its tiny face against him as it had already claimed him as its permanent residence.

Damon was not really a pet person. He had never owned any pet before or interacted much with pets, but he could definitely get on board with this little thing.

Damon raised a hand and patted the kitten’s head. “Look at you. Soft, fluffy, and terrifying enough to send that asshole flying.”

“Meow,” the kitten agreed proudly.

A shaky groan echoed from the broken ridge.

The First dragged himself out, his mask shattered, his arm dangling uselessly at his side. His voice shook worse than the landscape. “You… you touched it? It let you touch it? That thing does not bond. It does not obey. It does not recognize masters. It kills everything it sees! It has already started controlling you. You just don’t see it? Can’t you see? That thing is evil!”

Damon looked at the innocent little thing and blinked. The kitten blinked in return. “Are you talking about my little cutie pie? My sweet little yummy nummy… my cuddly baby… my… what shall I call you, baby?”

The First stared dumbfoundedly at the bloodthirsty maniac who had been nothing short of a killing machine up until now. The same bloodsucker was now conversing in baby talk?

Damon scratched the kitten under its chin. “She likes chin rubs.”

“MEOW,” the kitten declared, smug as a queen.

The First pointed a trembling finger at Damon. “Stop petting it! Stop bonding with it! You fool, once it matures, once it remembers what it is, it will-”

He couldn’t complete his thought. The beasts in the area had already recovered. Despite the lingering fear in their bodies, they started charging towards Damon and the small cat anyway.

Shadow Hounds. Lurkers. Prowlers. Dozens of them. A tidal wave of claws, fangs, and shadow magic descended upon them once again. The little kitten’s eyes widened in shock. For a second, it seemed frightened and overwhelmed.

“Oh, baby… these scary beasts are bothering you? I will take care of all of them right this second. Just keep your eyes closed, and all these scary monsters will disappear quickly.”

The kitten squeaked and buried its tiny head into Damon’s collar, trembling like a terrified puffball. Damon patted her once, gently. “Good girl. Stay right there.”

Then he looked up. His eyes went cold. He started unleashing Divine Bladestorm again, as he got into a mudfight with the beasts again. However, this time everything was so much easier and faster. Even though they were attacking, they were still afraid, and it showed.

Shadow Hounds burst apart mid-leap. Lurkers were carved in half before their claws even reached him. Prowlers tried to shadow step behind him only to be instantly erased by a trailing sweep of divine light.

Damon simply moved, cutting through the horde with fluid brutality. He barely broke a sweat. The kitten let out a soft, muffled “mrrp,” clearly terrified but trusting him enough to remain buried against his collar.

“Yes, yes, I’ve got you,” Damon murmured, voice calm even as he ripped a Shadow Wolf’s throat out with his bare hand.

More beasts came. More beasts fell.

The First watched from a distance, frozen, pale, shaking. This wasn’t a battle anymore. It was a one-sided culling.

Several notifications continued to flash in front of Damon. His shadow skill repertoire exploded. His shadow affinity had skyrocketed. Even though he wasn’t able to gain stats and experience points, quickly hitting the threshold, every fight was still empowering him plenty.

More importantly, it looked like a big chunk of experience points was going to the cute little kitten, especially because he was not getting any. The little thing even got a couple of level-up notifications.

Soon, it even unlocked a new skill.

[Abyssal Burst]

“Oh? Interesting!” Damon smiled as he swiped the notification away. Before he could activate [Share skill] and test it out, the little kitten on his shoulders all of a sudden opened its cute little mouth.

BOOOOM.

A powerful shockwave of abyssal energy erupted from the kitten’s tiny jaws, exploding outward in a perfect sphere. The force was immense, dense, and crushing, annihilating everything in its path.

Shadow beasts within fifty meters didn’t even have time to scream. They exploded and dropped dead, spilling blood essence everywhere.

Beasts further away were hurled across the slopes, smashing into rocks so hard that the mountains cracked. Entire chunks of terrain caved in, ridges split apart, and the ground buckled as if hammered from below by a god.

It looked like the kitten had even adjusted the power of the attack so that the blood essence wouldn’t be lost.

Damon’s coat snapped violently behind him, and even he had to brace himself, boots digging trenches into the stone. The shockwave passed. Silence followed.
