Chapter 617: What is this?
Damon did not stop with just that one display of divine radiance. He cast the three skills on repeat, claiming more and more beasts with every second, culling through the horde of beasts with ease.

While their shadow magic was ridiculously strong, they had been completely unexposed to any other kind of element, which made them very vulnerable to especially divine and holy magic. As long as Damon was able to unleash an attack power capable of one-shotting them, he was winning.

It took a bit to get over the skill cooldown and work around it. But slowly and surely, he was carving his way through the mountain of beasts jumping on him from all sides. He picked up a skill or two related to shadow healing, which further made everything so much easier.

He quickly became as robust as they were in the shadows, but he was also able to take out holy and divine magic as his weapons, giving him the slight edge.

“Impossible!” The First gasped. Damon could hear his voice clearly despite all of the ruckus. “How can a bloodsucker wield divinity? You! What are you? How can you exist?”

Damon didn’t bother entertaining him. He simply cast Divine Bladestorm again.

Another burst of radiant blades tore through dozens of beasts instantly. Their bodies didn’t even have time to regenerate before the light erased them completely. Notifications stacked on top of each other in a rapid, endless chain. His shadow affinity spiked even further.

Radiant Wellspring blossomed under his feet once more. The golden light flooded his system, doubling his regeneration again. Bastion of the Condemned snapped into shape a moment later, just long enough to block a massive shadow prowler that tried to dig its fangs into his throat.

The bastion shattered, as expected, but the prowler died from the leftover divine splash.

Damon moved through the chaos like he owned the place.

Every time divine radiance appeared, the shadow beasts recoiled in instinctive terror. Every time holy light erupted, their barriers cracked. And every time divine blades manifested, they died faster than they could reform.

More beasts fell. More affinity rose. More divine flashes wiped out wave after wave.

The First’s voice trembled again, “You should not be able to touch divinity! Bloodsucker, why are you not rotting? How can you wield poison, blood, shadow, and divinity? What kind of a monster are you?”

Just as he uttered those words, the First finally realized that he had missed something else entirely. The egg! It was already too late!

The egg was hatching right now in the middle of all of this madness. Pieces of the eggshell were breaking apart and falling. Abyssal energy hissed where the pieces of shell dropped, burning away any beast that had the misfortune of being in the spot.

“Noooo!” A sharp scream sounded as a black blur bounded towards the egg. “Don’t let that egg hatch! You don’t understand! It will kill us all! It will bring about the end of this world! You will roam like a mindless corpse!”

However, he couldn’t even come near Damon. The beasts simply did not let him. They automatically blocked him and started attacking him from all directions. They did not differentiate between Umbra’s hand members and newcomers. Everyone who came inside were their prey.

The First was blasted backward, crashing into a jagged shadow ridge so hard that cracks spidered through the mountain itself. Damon calmly crushed a Shadow Lurker under his heel, grabbed a Shadow Hound by the throat, and hurled it into three others trying to circle him.

“You’re really dramatic,” Damon said, stepping through the chaos like it was nothing more than a morning jog. “Also, stay away from my dragon baby.”

Crack.

Another fissure tore through the egg. Abyssal light poured out of it in thin streams, sweeping through the battlefield like silent ripples. Every shadow beast froze mid-attack, tails stiff, ears pinned back, bodies trembling from pure instinctive terror. They could all feel it. Something legendary was going to step out.

Damon waited in anticipation.

“No… No… No!” The First scrambled upright, panic shredding his voice. “Bloodsucker, stop it! Do you not understand what that creature is? It is not a blessing! It is not a pet! It will never be your weapon. You will only end up as its-”

Damon raised a hand and blasted another Divine Bladestorm straight into a cluster of beasts. “I understood exactly one thing,” he said over the screams and explosions. “It’s mine.”

The First choked on a furious shriek.

More pieces of shell fell away, each hitting the ground with a sizzling burst that disintegrated anything near it. Abyssal pressure rolled outward in strong waves.

The realm shook.

The beasts backed away.

The First fell silent in raw horror.

The egg split straight down the middle with a deafening crack.

Damon smirked.

The egg burst open.

A wave of abyssal light blasted outward, sweeping across the entire mountainside. Every beast within sight dropped flat to the ground, whimpering, their instincts overriding everything else as if something far superior had just entered the room.

A small silhouette tumbled out of the cracked shell, rolling once before stopping at Damon’s feet.

“Abomination! Kill it! Kill it now!” The First shouted from the side. He snapped out of the trance and bounded towards the small thing, taking advantage of the fact that all the beasts had been temporarily suppressed. He had to kill it. Now!

However, when he came closer, he froze in shock. On the other side, Damon also stood still, completely shocked.

“What… what is this?” Both First and Damon spoke out at the same time.

The beast staring up at them was small. It was tiny. Barely the size of a housecat.

No, to be more precise, it was a cat.

A kitten?

The small thing sat in the middle of the shattered eggshell, its pitch-black fur fluffed up, its tail curled neatly around its paws. Its eyes were the same shade of midnight black with golden slits.

The kitten blinked once. Then meowed. A soft, polite, and innocent… Meow?
