Chapter 615: Got company
While the egg was one reason, there were also other important factors like the fact that his current shadow affinity has skyrocketed, especially after he had fought with so many of the Umbra’s hand acolytes.

There was a high chance that he might be able to find more shadow affinity monsters, which would only help him further.

Besides, he already had a part of the legacy, Umbra’s lesser shadow magic. Combined with everything else, he would only be losing out if he did not enter the legacy at this point. Whether or not the First was laying some sort of trap inside for him, this had been his plan all along.

Now it was time for him to finally enter the legacy and see what the whole deal was about. There was no way he was going to back away from this. This wasn’t some optional detour. This was the doorway he had been aiming for since the moment he first learned about Umbra’s Hand.

Trap or no trap. Preparation or ambush. It didn’t matter.

Damon took one last breath, feeling the egg vibrate against his chest, cracks spreading faster as the glowing fissures bled abyssal light into the air. The portal rippled like an open throat waiting to swallow him whole. He stepped forward.

A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “Let’s see what your legacy really is about.”

And without another word, Damon walked straight into the swirling black portal.

The Third let out a strangled gasp. “Master! Wait! WAIT!”

Too late.

The shadows swallowed Damon whole.

Damon did not enter the legacy land completely clueless. He had already asked Third a bit about the world inside, so he was not entirely blindsided. But the world was meant to blind everyone who entered.

A vast expanse unfolded before him, a world of darkness.

Normal people wouldn’t even be able to see in this world, and this was the first test for the assassins. If one did not have enough levels in the dark vision skill, they might as well walk right back out, as they would have already failed the trial.

However, Damon had no issues in this department. His crimson eyes glowed faintly in the dark, perfectly observing everything around him. For all intents and purposes, he was standing in what appeared to be a perfectly normal world.

He found himself standing in the middle of long, wavy grass. Each blade should have been green, but here they swayed as ripples of shadow, black silhouettes outlined only by the faintest hints of silver.

Mountains rose in the distance, jagged spires cutting into the sky like torn paper edges. A stream flowed nearby, making the soft sound of water… except the water was pitch black, like liquefied night sliding over smooth stone.

There was nothing overtly hostile at first glance. No monstrous aura. No aggressive shadow beasts leaping out to eat him alive. No immediate trial marker screaming danger.

If anything, it looked peaceful.

Damon inhaled once, letting his senses stretch outward. The entire realm pulsed with shadow energy, dense and ancient. His body reacted instantly, his shadow affinity surged, responding to the environment like a plant gulping sunlight after a drought.

The egg on his chest vibrated again. A sharp crack split its shell, spreading wider across the surface. Damon felt the abyssal heat leak out, slow but steady.

Timing was perfect.

He stepped forward, letting the black grass part under his feet. Every movement caused faint ripples of shadow to peel away from him. And the moment he took his second step, the entire landscape flickered.

The grass turned into writhing tendrils. The mountains bent like hunched beasts. The water surged upward like a gaping maw made of liquid night. Then everything snapped back to normal.

“Shadow illusions?” Damon mused as he looked around. The trick was neat, but in front of his senses- Before he could finish the thought, a black blur swept past him.

Damon dodged just in time. Otherwise, he would have taken a big hit right in one of his vital points, draining a big chunk of his health. As for who attacked him, Damon had no doubt about it.

The first.

Of course the bastard wouldn’t wait. He had home-ground advantage, legacy familiarity, and now an entire realm’s shadow authority behind him. The moment Damon entered, testing illusions appeared, then a knife to the throat. Classic assassin welcome.

“Persistent,” Damon muttered.

The maniac who had run into this place right before him had obviously very specific plans for him. It looked like he would have to tackle this legacy world with someone else constantly aiming for his neck.

Another blur shot toward him.

This time, Damon didn’t dodge.

He caught the blade on his forearm, venom hardening his skin like living armor. Sparks of shadow essence scattered like black embers. The First appeared for a split second, a silhouette behind a cracked mask before vanishing again.

“So that’s how you want to play it,” Damon said.

Another attack immediately came and this time it aimed at the egg.

“Fuck you! Don’t you dare target my dragon baby!”

Damon’s reaction was instant. Poison domain ignited around him in a violent burst, green-black fumes spiraling like a toxic hurricane. At the same time, he unleashed Blood Storm, dozens of crimson arcs ripping through the shadows like serrated lightning.

The incoming blur vanished.

The First had simply dissolved back into the darkness, retreating the moment his strike failed. The asshole was clearly not done yet. He was just waiting for another opportune moment to attack again.

Damon clicked his tongue. He shook off the illusions and shadow stepped deeper into the legacy lands. From what Third had mentioned, this entire place was loaded with treasures every which way but he knew exactly where he was going to start from.

He dashed right into the mountainous regions where most of the shadow beasts dwelled.

The terrain shifted around him as he ran. The ground grew uneven, sharp outcroppings jutting upward. The deeper he went, the more the mountain range seemed to vibrate with dormant life.

Soon, a low growl echoed between the peaks. Then another. Then dozens.
