Chapter 609: Die!
Dead silence. No one spoke a word.

The First’s head tilted slightly. Just slightly. But that tiny movement made the Third’s bladder twitch in betrayal.

“…He died?” the First repeated, the look in his eyes enough to kill many.

The Second’s fan lowered a fraction. Her gaze sharpened. “He died just like that inside your own domain? From just your torture?”

The Sixth cackled. “Damn, Third! I knew you were incompetent, but killing the target by accident? That’s next level!”

The Third forced out an unhinged laugh. “Ha ha ha! Yeah well… you know me… overachiever…”

Twenty daggers immediately pointed at his throat. He froze again. The First took a single step forward. “If he died, then where are his things? We need that item from the Fairy King’s tomb.”

The Third felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped on his head. Why did this bastard have to be so ridiculously overpowered? Couldn’t he have left that fairy king shit for someone else? I mean, what the fuck do you need that for? Aren’t you already fucking ridiculously strong?

“Aha ha ha. Aha ha ha. What do you mean? Didn’t that princess get it? I think she got it. We need to storm that castle now and show the Emperor who is the real boss here! Yup. Actually, that sounds like a really good idea. Why don’t we do that? I mean, it has to be done at some point. Why not today? I feel good about today. How about you? What do you think? Hmmm?”

The First stared at him with an expression so flat it looped back into terrifying. Before he could say anything, another assassin took action.

A man with bloodshot eyes and infinite hatred burning in his aura appeared in front of the Third as shadows bound him from all sides at the same time.

“The Firth… Nara… what the fuck?” The Third started panicking.

Nara seethed in anger as he spat out venomously. “You are lying. He is not someone whom you can kill in your fucking toy box.”

“Hey! Hey! Why should I lie? Aha ha ha. You must have hit your head hard in your last job.” The Third tried to laugh it off, but Nara’s face was inches from his own, eyes burning like a starving specter dragged out of hell.

“No. You are lying. I know it because you are not the only one who has faced him.” Nara no longer bothered talking to the Third. He turned to the First and pointed to the small shard that was floating in front of their deity, a nameless mess of shadows.

“Look at that shard, First. Something is clearly wrong with it. Its size has drastically reduced. This cannot be normal. Something must have happened. You yourself said so. Third is lying. In fact, everything he said was a lie. Something is going on here. Don’t trust him.”

The First remained indifferent, but the look in his eyes spoke volumes.

Gulp. Third knew that his time was up. Without wasting another second, he crushed the vial behind him. A black ripple pulsed out from the shattered vial like a shockwave of silent death.

Nara’s expression shifted from murderous certainty to pure animal instinct. “…Move,” he whispered. Too late. The poison erupted, spreading a cloud of pitch-black miasma.

Dozens of assassins staggered back, choking and spasming as the poison wrapped around their limbs like living tar. Their shadows flickered, their senses twisted. Weapons trembled in their hands as the air filled with a deadly scent.

The Second’s fan snapped open, creating a barrier of shimmering black petals. “This is not ordinary poison,” she hissed.

“No,” the First said quietly, eyes narrowing. “It’s something worse.”

Nara’s shadows recoiled violently as the miasma touched him. “This is his poison,” he growled. “This is that bloodsucker’s venom! Third is colluding with the bloodsucker! He has betrayed us all!”

He cut off. Because suddenly, he realized something. The Third was no longer anywhere near the fog. He had shadow-stepped a full sixty meters back and was sprinting as his life depended on it. Which it absolutely did.

“Run, you idiots!” he shrieked from a distance. “That’s not normal poison! That’s not even abnormal poison! That’s his poison! Do you know what his poison does to people? because I don’t! and I don’t want to find out!”

Twenty throwing knives instantly embedded themselves in the ground around his feet. The First’s voice drifted through the spreading cloud of poison, cold and sharp.

“Bring him back.” Shadows shot toward the Third.

He screamed, “I did my best! I really did! I even threw it with my off-hand! Please let me live! Aaaaaagh! ”

But before the shadows could reach him… a silhouette stepped out of the portal. The miasma parted around the figure as it feared him. Bloodlust radiated from him like a living storm.

The First’s eyes finally widened. The Second stiffened, fan at ready. Nara’s hatred flared bright as he shot forward, wanting vengeance.

Damon stepped out. His crimson eyes glowed through the poison cloud like twin embers in a grave. The Third stared at Damon, mouth hanging open, shaking with trauma and relief at the same time.

“I… I stalled,” he squeaked. “Several seconds. Not one. Not two. Several seconds. I deserve a medal.”

Damon didn’t answer. He looked straight at the First… then at the ring of assassins… then at the poison cloud twisting around their formation like a venomous phantom.

And finally, he smiled. “Let’s get this over with.”

The moment Damon spoke, the entire crowd exploded with murderous aura. Daggers floated. Shadows writhed. Killing intent thickened like a storm ready to swallow anyone in its path. Only the Third kept trembling behind Damon like a traumatized featherless chicken.

Nara moved first. Hatred propelled him like a spear of darkness, shadows exploding from his feet as he lunged straight at Damon. “You! ” he hissed, voice breaking, “Fight me again!” He shot forward like a starving beast let off its leash, shadows twisting around him like living chains eager to bind Damon in place.

“DIE!”
