Chapter 594: Have you completely lost your mind?
Both Damon and the old elf snapped their heads toward the doorway.
Lirae walked into the room with the same calm and gentle smile she always wore, yet it was unmistakably different now. Softer in warmth, sharper in presence. Her feet made no sound on the stone floor, moonlit mist curling around her ankles like affectionate pets.
Damon stood up without realizing it. She looked the same and nothing like the same.
Her hair shimmered as she moved, threaded with streaks of silver and deep crimson that hadn’t been there before. Her eyes now held a dual radiance, silver at the center fading into a faint, hypnotic red around the edges.
Kaelthorn froze. Green Eyes gasped. The old elf went utterly still.
“Lirae…?” the elf whispered. “Child, what… what did the Legacy do to you?”
Lirae didn’t answer. Her gaze was fixed entirely on Damon. Her aura didn’t feel elven anymore. It didn’t feel vampiric either.
When she finally stood in front of him, she reached up and brushed her fingers against his cheek. A faint shimmer rippled through her touch, a blend of cool moonlight and warm blood essence. “My love…” Her eyes were a bit sad.
Damon immediately pulled her closer and hugged her. “I am sorry, I took this long to come and find you. I… I have no excuses. I should have come sooner. I never should have left you out of my sight.”
Lirae’s breath caught softly against his chest. For a moment she simply held him, her forehead pressed against his shoulder, fingers trembling just faintly in his clothes. “No,” she whispered, cupping his face with both hands. “Don’t say that.”
Damon opened his mouth to argue, but she shook her head firmly.
“You came the moment you realized something was wrong. You tore through this desert, through Erelion, through every barrier in your way just to reach me.” Her voice softened. “You always come for me. Always.”
The old elf cleared his throat to indicate that he was also present here but Lirae didn’t exactly seem to care about that.
“You don’t have to come for me anymore.” She unexpectedly added.
Damon did not like it. “What does that mean?”
Behind them, the old elf was grinning. It looked like his granddaughter has taken the same decision as he thought she would.
Lirae stepped back just enough to look Damon directly in the eyes. Her palms still held his face. There was no fear in her gaze. No hesitation. Only quiet certainty. “It means,” she said gently, “that I am no longer someone who needs saving.”
“Wait, what?” The old elf blurted out.
Damon smiled.
“What do you mean you don’t need saving?!” the old elf anxiously asked. “Child, this is NOT the line I thought you were going to say! What happened to choosing your people? Staying with your family? Why does this sound like the opposite?!”
Lirae ignored him entirely.
Her thumb brushed Damon’s cheekbone, a slow, deliberate stroke that carried all her love. “I am not the weak girl you had to rescue back then,” she whispered. “Here. Taste me and see for yourself.”
The old elf screeched like a startled forest bird.
“Taste?!” he shouted. “Child! Have you completely lost your mind? You can’t just… just offer your blood to a vampire in front of your grandfather! What is wrong with you?!”
Lirae didn’t even look at him. She simply tilted her head to the side, exposing the delicate curve of her neck.
Damon’s gaze dropped to her neck. He bent down and kissed her gently on the neck. He understood very well why she was doing this. She wanted to make her choice very clear for everyone.
“Let’s first go back and then we can talk about everything else.”
The old elf scratched his head and looked helpless. He opened his mouth to say something when a far sterner voice entered the room.
“I already told you to stop doting on her so much. She needs to act like the rest of her family. She has responsibilities and she needs to know she cannot simply be running around with some unruly bloodsucker.”
An old elven woman entered the room. She exuded pride, elegance and nobility from top to bottom, a picture perfect image of a royal elf. Just like the ones Damon had heard, seen and read about. In short, she was the complete opposite of the grandfather.
While he was wild, chaotic, muscle-bound and mischievous, she was sculpted perfection. Every line of her posture radiated elegance. Her silver hair fell like a waterfall of moonlight. Her gown flowed with the regal grace of a queen. Her aura was cold, refined, ancient… and painfully strict.
If the grandfather was a forest storm, she was the untouched heart of an ancient grove.
Seeing her, even the old man was sweating. “Oh no… we’re dead.”
The old woman’s gaze swept across the room, sharp and assessing until it landed on Damon’s hand curled casually around Lirae’s waist.
Her eye twitched.
Then she saw the faint imprint of Damon’s lips on Lirae’s neck and the way she was standing, pressed up against him.
Her other eye twitched.
Then she saw the crimson mixed in with Lirae’s gorgeous silver hair and the unmistakeable crimson glow in her eyes, corrupting the silver yet again.
Her entire face twitched.
Very, very slowly, she turned toward the old elf. “You! What did you do? What did you let him do? I thought the corruption hadn’t spread when she got here. The legacy should have removed it entirely! What did you let him do? Did he force his blood on her again? You let THIS!” she gestured wildly at Damon “put his mouth on our granddaughter?!”
“I didn’t let anything!” the grandfather shouted. “She walked in and started offering her neck like… like…”
“A fool!” The old woman didn’t wait another heartbeat. She stormed forward, seized Lirae’s wrist in a grip strong enough to snap steel, and spun to drag her away.
But she didn’t get two steps. Lirae didn’t move.
