Rivers of the Night - Chapter 748
Chapter 748: Gouge
The Alpha’s cultivation wasn’t high, but something about its cultivation made everyone move out of the way. Well, it was either that, or everyone assumed that anyone bold enough to let a beast walk through the streets of Umbra City was extremely confident in their abilities and status.
It wasn’t that having beasts out was against the rules, but it was certainly frowned upon unless it was a beast intelligent enough to be worthy of such a thing. And usually, such beasts were under the control of exceptional Soul Mancers, ones that came from bloodlines that, well…
Were on the same level or above the Shonagh.
“Theron!”
A voice Theron had already been expecting to hear rang out at that moment. He turned and looked surprised to see Chen standing not too far away, likewise with a woman near him. Though, unlike Theron, it didn’t seem like they were alone. There were two other young men with Chen at the moment.
That said, also unlike Theron, the woman near Chen seemed to be very intent on getting and keeping his attention. Ayame was so delicately holding onto Theron’s arm she might as well have been hovering above it. To outsiders, they looked close, but Theron knew the truth.
By comparison, the woman by Chen was doing everything but stuffing his mouth with her panties. She didn’t seem to realize the street was bustling at all, only having eyes for him.
To Chen’s credit, she was a stunning beauty as well. Maybe two or three ticks beneath Ayame, but certainly on Lyra’s level. And considering how the city was talking about Lyra these days, it was quite clear that beauty at that level was already quite rare.
Theron could tell almost immediately that this young woman was a Spatial Mancer. What a coincidence… but this seemed like a love affair that was destined for failure.
As far as his research let him know, the Umbra and Shonagh weren’t exactly on the greatest of terms. They weren’t mortal enemies, but they weren’t friendly either.
Of course, the Shonagh were here for the Umbra Clan’s big day anyway, because that was just how politics went everywhere. Even if they didn’t want to be, the Shonagh would appear and would probably present a pretty grand gift as well.
Why was this important?
Well, if the Umbra and Chron were forming a marriage alliance, the meaning of such a thing would be pretty greatly diluted if the Chron then turned around and had another alliance with the Shonagh.
The Umbra wouldn’t be very happy about that, and something told Theron that the Shonagh were quite well aware of this. Maybe Chen had even been told by his elders to allow this lovestruck miss to do as she pleased.
What was more interesting, though, was the fact the Chron hadn’t stepped in to stop it.
If this young miss of the Chron Clan was important enough that the Shonagh would use their young heir like this, then she would certainly have excellent status in the Chron Clan.
Well, the Chron Clan were so few in number to begin with that anyone born to them was de facto of great importance.
This was to say that she should be someone who was monitored and had bodyguards. There was no way the Chron Clan didn’t know what was happening.
Then there were the two young men following after Chen.
Both wore very distinct uniforms—well-pressed, black and silver—matched with heavy boots on their feet. They had pendants of various shapes and colors on their chests, as well as military caps on their heads.
They looked like they were about to go into a military training exercise rather than the fact they were on a leisurely stroll with friends.
Resistance Army.
Theron had anticipated this as well. Thanks to Lyra and Ayame, his understanding of these matters was deeper than before, so he had a guess that the Umbra were doing this for the sake of better position in the Resistance Army.
But it seemed that the Shonagh weren’t sitting idly either.
As for these two young men, they seemed to have good relationships with Chen. After briefly scanning them, Theron smiled.
“Chen, I see you’ve been well.”
“Not as well as you, it seems.” Chen laughed—almost a little too uproariously.
Seemingly sensing a disturbance in the air, the young Chron miss looked up and set eyes on Ayame. She was immediately dazed for a moment and then looked down at herself.
She had hardly registered what Chen said before because she was in her own little world, but now that it came to her…
Her nose couldn’t help but wrinkle, her lips pouting.
Theron chuckled. “Ayame is just doing me a favor, she has much better prospects than me.”
Ayame was inwardly taken aback. According to the plan, she was supposed to be Theron’s fiancée, was she not? Had he changed his mind? Or did he want her to interject and stop him from debasing himself?
In the end, her internal monologue was left for her ears and thoughts alone. She said nothing at all, her expression remaining quite cold.
“Don’t try and bullshit me, Theron. As if a woman with a disposition like that takes just any man’s arm.” Chen walked up with a big grin on his face. “Lucky for me, I have my own little beauty. She’s gorgeous, isn’t she?”
Young miss Chron felt a lot better after hearing this. In fact, she was practically beaming.
The two Resistance Army youths, though, seemed to have tuned out the conversation. All they could feel was that Theron was a Quasi Cloud Realm expert, while Ayame was already on the verge of the Seventh Dome of Heaven Realm.
Even if she hadn’t been such a beauty, they would have found it absolutely ridiculous.
What neither of them expected, though, was that Theron would be the first one to speak to them, his gentle smile very much still there as he ignored Chen’s words and addressed them directly.
“Tell me, would you like me to gouge out your eyeballs for you? Or do you want to do it yourself?”
