Rivers of the Night - Chapter 714
Chapter 714: Demon Nobles
Theron didn’t immediately reply, taking in this new information. From her words, it sounded like the strongest Demon Generals one could access reasonably were at the Demon Duke level. However, there were at least two tiers beyond that… but considering how she spoke just now, there might even be a third.
All of a sudden, Theron was very, very interested.
If the Demon Dukes were providing such hard missions that even Dome of Heaven geniuses like the female assassin were struggling, then they had to be at least in a cultivation realm one level beyond—maybe even two—considering the female assassin was already nearing the peak of the Dome of Heaven Realm.
In that case, how much more powerful were the Demon Princes? What of the Demon Kings? And what of what lay beyond?
The Demon Dukes were apparently already capable of reversing time with a wave of the hand and seeing through what happened in the past—what were the others capable of?
Theron knew that his only path toward progress was to continuously come into contact with these higher and higher realms of cultivation. His cultivation method was self-created at this point, and unless he could continuously feel out the paths of those at much higher levels than himself, it would be all too easy to stall.
He was very, very interested in this path.
“In that case, introduce me to a Demon Duke.”
The female assassin’s eyes narrowed, but in the end, she slowly nodded.
“Alright.”
“Then we have a deal.” Theron reached out a hand.
The female assassin took it, her sharp awareness all the more heightened. If she were as weak as Theron, she would never give a much stronger cultivator this opportunity. There were a million things he could do to end her life right this moment.
And yet… Theron, as intelligent as he was, didn’t seem to notice the danger at all, nor did he flinch.
In the end, the handshake ended before the female assassin could do much of anything. She looked down at her own hand in a daze, as though wondering what had happened to her.
Shaking her head, she turned and left, not bothering to ask for her pendant. Theron was correct—even if she took it back now, they would try to kill her.
Theron didn’t try to stop her. In a flicker, she was already gone.
After a moment, he walked to his bathhouse, cleansed himself, and then stepped out feeling fresh and ready.
As he relaxed in his bed, crossing his legs, he felt that his cultivation was already on the verge of the Sixth Resonance. It seemed that his estimations were off a bit—this was even faster than he expected. He had only been here for two days and some change.
But it was probably the case that he hadn’t factored in battle and danger spiking his potential all the more. Veinsong seemed to have had an especially good effect on him.
Regardless, it was time to find out what was in the ring.
Theron opened it without much fanfare this time, immediately going to the layer he had been interested in from the start.
‘Hm?’
Theron didn’t know what he expected to find, but a field of herbs was not it.
No, it wasn’t a field of herbs, but rather just a field alone. There were no real crops here other than the grass itself. But the grass was very odd. It was not only such a vibrant shade of green it almost looked artificial, like it had been carved out of emerald—but it was also radiating just the slightest bit of gold.
‘Is this…?’
Theron’s eyes narrowed.
He didn’t believe it was a coincidence that the formula needed special ingredients, and now Chen was carrying around a field that looked specially designed to grow those exact ingredients.
Now, whether that was true or not, Theron had no idea. But that left an obvious question:
Why would the Shonagh leave something that was so important with their youth? If this field was truly the key to growing the ingredients they needed for the formula to work, then it didn’t make any sense.
It was one thing if just a single person figured this out. But Chen’s assassination had been put up for the entire guild to take a stab at, or at the very least, all of its Dome of Heaven assassins.
This was all to say that clearly, the Shonagh had both given this to Chen and hadn’t protected the information well. So if they were doing it as an attempt to fake out the public, they had done a piss-poor job of it.
That made Theron believe there was another reason something like this would be in Chen’s hands.
Theron’s eyes narrowed and he pulled on the field. Surprisingly, it moved and then rose up.
With a whoosh, it vanished, appearing in the outside world in a crystal snow globe of sorts. In his palm like this, it looked little different from a toy. However, also in line with that, Theron couldn’t see anything special about it.
He probed with his Third Eye, trying to see something, only for his mind to shudder uncontrollably.
A strong suction force came from his glabella, and the crystal ball vanished into it.
Theron felt the world shake around him, confusion coloring his features. He felt as though nothing at all had changed, and he couldn’t seem to grasp what was going on.
There was no way nothing could have happened just now. Also, could he have made a mistake probing the field like he had just now? If it was so easy to store in your mind’s eye, then why hadn’t Chen done it already? Could he have missed the timing for something?
Theron frowned, wondering if he should have tried to question the female assassin about this first. But he hadn’t wanted to reveal this too early. If she knew he had the formula and Chen’s spatial ring, she might think he had too many cards to agree to team up with him.
It was because she thought she might still be able to get her hands on this ring that she was willing to enter a partnership. If she felt it was too one-sided, it would have the opposite effect.
Just as Theron was about to ask the Nightingale Ancestor Bird for clarification, his pupils constricted into pinholes.
